No problemi. Anche che un tv show recentemente di mostrare ASL tutto malamente.

(I'm sorry if I screwed that up. Trying to say "No problem. Also recently there was a show that showed ASL badly". My Italian has gotten rusty.)

"Non c'è problema. Inoltre, di recente c'è stato uno show televisivo che ha malamente mostrato l' ASL."

Don't worry about it, you're excused because:

  1. You're not a professional translator (as far as I know)
  2. Italian is a pretty difficult language

It was some kind of comedy sketch. What happened was during an emergency there was an announcement with some official. Some comedy show decided to parody the ASL interpreter standing alongside him during the announcement. Only they apparently didn't use any signs at all. Just random hand movements. I didn't see it but there was quite an uproar in the Deaf community about it.

I just saw it. It's this one, isn't it?

Now, here's something you may not agree with. I think SNL got in trouble not because of the concept, but because they were parodying real people in it, and mostly, I think, this is an issue of political correctness.

Marlee Matlin tweeted:

Imagine if a show started making fun of Spanish (using fake Spanish) or Japanese. Do you think they'd actually get away with it? Uh, no...

Not today, no, Marlee. Because today comedians can't do shit without being called insensitive assholes. I think everything has a potential to be made fun of, nothing should be "sacred", otherwise you lose the entire point of comedy.

The skit isn't hilarious, but not entirely unfunny. If it has a fault, it's going on for too damn long. It's not making fun of ASL, it's making fun of what people with normal hearing see when they see ASL. It's making fun of ignorance and false perception. If you actually skip ahead, it's making fun of NJ, and white people in general!

Besides, we already did this kind of stuff way back in the 80's:

You see the difference, don't you? I'm ok with this stuff, it's juvenile, and it's intended to be wrong. If you find it funny or not, that's up to you.

I'm actually ok with this:

I'm not ok with half assed jobs, where they're actually supposed to represent a language, but they come nowhere close to it.

Like this case:

The movie is set on an italian ocean liner, where all the service signs are written in mangled italian. This is a feature film, you're destroying my suspension of desbelief by distracting me with your shitty translations!!
