Info: Re-mixed audio tracks on video releases — Page 9

The Dollars trilogy on LD has the original English dub audio WITHOUT all the noise reduction and severe EQ that severely cut the atmospherics and detail.

They sound as good as vintage prints but clearer due to a proper transfer and not being degraded optical tracks. There is some intrinsic noise to the sources here and there, but it is beyond putting up with due to the uncut dynamic range. Even the Morricone scores play generally without distortion!

The only downside is that FAFDM is cut in little bits all over the place. The new German uncut BD is supposed to have the English dub in DTS. GBU is overmatted and uses some kind of Italian-US hybrid source. I've got the rarer reissue and will do a comparison later.

Checked out the original DVD releases of the Tim Burton Batman DVD after the discussion on the previous page. They sound really good... Thanks for the recommendation; be interesting to see them with the BD video (though that's somewhat lackluster). Wonderful soundtrack.

Batman Forever is like the others, same video master, but with the same 5.1 theatrical mix as the ac3 track. That being said I did notice an slight overall difference A/B-ing between the two. The LD is noticeably punchier and has greater bass whereas the DVD version seems a tiny bit constrained as if it had been tweaked for the home.

Love this mix, very straightforward with some of the clearest mono dialog ever. Inf act it's too clear as all of the pronunciations are enhanced as is the ADR so it feels almost exasperated from the mix at times. Another reason why the Dolby Surround version is almost as good if not better.

Ok, after some research, here's what I could find on "The Wizard Of Oz":

LD: Some (if not all) LaserDiscs are mono (like the 50th Anniversary Edition), others were fake (credit for info: skyjedi2005) stereo (like a Japanese release with reference number G98F5545).

link: http://www.lddb.com/search.php?search=wizard+of+oz&sort=title

DVD: Dolby Digital 5.1 for the simple release, original slightly altered (credit for info: SilverWook) mono included in the Collector's Edition and the 70th Anniversary Edition.

BD: Both Dolby TrueHD 5.1 and mono sound is available on all official Blu-rays.

Are you sure that is not another electronically retracked into stereo mix.  I have a 007 laserdisc like that its the mono mix faked for stereo playback.

on Wizard of OZ I grew up with the incorrect black and white opening and always assumed that was original as well, only recently have they restored the true sepia opening of the film on home video.  Could be wrong maybe it was on laserdisc but every tv version i saw and vhs was black and white.

Yeah, we need the original Dirty Harry mix back. The 5.1 sucks.

The proper sepia tone was restored for the 50th anniversary in 1989. I still have my LD of that edition.

There has been a small omission in the mono soundtrack since 2000. From the IMDB...

"The 2000 Warner Brothers DVD edition suffers from print defects due to shrinkage of the materials used in the restoration, and cuts out one line of Dorothy's which occurs during a reel change when Toto is being taken from Dorothy. As she whimpers Toto's name, there's a stutter edit where an off camera Garland repeats the first few words of a line, "Oh, To, oh Toto." The audio production team (who were doing the restoration) went back to the script and found no correspondence. So, the apparent mistake was excised."

Hopefully, this will be fixed for the 75th anniversary video release this fall.

On bluray they dialled down the volume for everything that is not a gunshot they changed the dynamics so much there is a hiss in scenes.

I wished I kept my expensive Korean dts import

Saw a bit of Batman and Batman Forever on SciFi this evening, and they clearly are older HD masters than the Blu Rays. Lots of dirt and white specks.

Have the soundtracks to these been examined?

If anyone is still after that Batman four pack DVD of the original releases, I've spotted it at Best Buy.

It was newly on sale for ten bucks, so I don't think it's out of print yet.

They are still selling the original Batman four pack DVD here in the UK in a number places as well. It makes a change for an older release DVD to still be in print.

The original widescreen DVD transfer of Batman is also interesting because for some unknown reason, it has an alternate take of the scene where Vicki is kissing the Joker's jacket. She doesn't pull a piece of lint out of her mouth (still wondering if that was improvised by Basinger).

Are you sure about that? it was the same master as the LD like all WB DVD launch titles
