The Lost World: Jurassic Park [ruLes] - BD RELEASED — Page 3

I was going through the Laserdisc version of TLW:JP here, and having compared it both with the HDTV and Bluray versions, I found no extra image in the Laserdisc version.

Infact, the Laserdisc and the current JP2 Bluray have the same framing. Maybe the Bluray gains a bit on the left and the LD one gains a bit on the right, like so. And the difference is so microscopic that its hardly something to be bothered about. The height is the same.

I will even go as far as to say that the framing of both LD and BD are the exact same, as my eyes may have tricked me into seeing a difference which isn't there! There is no noticeable difference in framing as identifiable as with the Jurassic Park LD and BD. The HDTV version is taller than both the versions.

I haven't check'd the sound though. I'll let you folks know after I've gone through it in a detailed manner.

Video Quality: Wonderful! Great restoration!

...uploading seems stuck at 99.9%... any hints? The folder containing the BD folder was never touched... I don't know how to solve this problem!

If I create a new torrent, will the data downloaded by the users retained?

LAST UPDATE

Well, I just recreated a new .torrent (search for the FIXED one) - hope users will retain their 99.9% and just download the missing 0.1%, but please make a backup, just in case... and please comment here if everything will be OK!

with your 99.9% chunks, or as new torrent? If it's new, 4% in 4hrs = "only" four days to download the whole movie! Good, as I'm seeding it for three weeks!

But I'd like to know from "99.9% users" if the new torrent works, and where lies the problem(s) in the unfinished file... I mean, if there is some seconds gaps/missing from end credits, it could be still watchable, right?

Thanks to everyone, and sorry for the problem!

Ah. Was one of the 99%ers. Probably should have been clearer about that. :P

The fixed .torrent works, and it "fetch" data from the old one, as in just one day someone has downloaded it. So, I deleted the old one to avoid confusion.

Yes the "FIXED" torrent works with the old data.

Delete the original torrent(not the data), then re-download the new torrent file on the same destination path, and it'll start a re-checking, then start downloading!

Oh, the Sound is also very good, as usual!

Ciao Andrea!

So how are you?

How's the weather in Italy of late? Here it's very hot( notTHAT kind of 'hot', he he)!

When are you planning on making the extras (THX, DOLBY etc trailers, making of, disc cover-art/jacket scans) available for us?

And what is your next major project?

Please let us know!

Ciao Papai, I'm happy to hear you! I'm fine; finally here we could "breath" a bit, after really hot days! About JP extras: please forgive me, but I don't think to release them soon, as I'm planning several other interesting projects...

The next will be "The Matrix", and I'm almost ready to release "The Thing" - check them out!

so, the dts is fully untouched or did you re-encode it?

Author

It is not possible to leave LD DTS "as is" if the final release will be BD, as LD DTS is 44.1KHz and BD standard is 48KHz; so, I had to decode to uncompressed, change sample frequency and re-encode it.

It could be possible to use untouched LD DTS with MKV container, and someone could think even to use BD video along with this LD DTS audio but BD and LD must have the same frame number, and I'm pretty sure that's not the case, so... the only chance to hear untouched LD DTS with BD video is that you have to cut (or duplicate) BD frames, so that resulted BD video is frame-by-frame equal to LD, but in that case you should do AVC (VC-1,MPEG2, whatever BD codec used by the source)->uncompressed(or better lossless using HuffYUV or Lagarith)->AVC - and believe me, it's better to reconvert DTS audio than BD video...

Great!

And about the extras- let me know when you're planning to do those!

And please empty your inbox, I am not able to send you PMs!

I am myself planning on creating a hybrid edition of Jurassic Park. Can you tell me which softwares should I use for editing video/audio and can I adjust aspect ratios in those editing platforms?

Though I use Adobe premiere for making short trailers and clips, it won't support a full movie as the rendering time will be overkill!

For my projects, I use only AviSynth through VirtualDub for all video (and many audio) processing... it's not easy at the beginning, though!

About JP and JP2 new projects (and extras, maybe), talking with zeropc I've had an idea: why don't use WOWOW video along with laserdisc audio? Also, if WOWOW color grading is off, I could always use the laserdisc for color reference... what do you think about?

First of all, how will you get a copy of WOWOW transfer? Second, it doesn't contain as wide a framing as the laserdisc versions do!

Some of the CG scenes are better in the HDTV versions, the WOWOW version is also such a master used for the HDTV and the BD maybe as the framing is very similar.

You can definitely use WOWOW source for TLWJP if its open-matte (1.78:1) and not 1.85:1. For the 1.85:1 BD version is already there!

Only if you are thinking of using the open-matte source, use the LD audio, otherwise it'll be a waste of time and money(electric bills)

Is the WOWOW source for both JP and TLW open-matte? If you have it, then please send me a screen-shot of the last scene when the Rex roars inside the lobby!

About the Colour-grading, none of the previous home-video versions have the right colour!

Only the 3D BD has the more accurate colour-grading, apart from a few shots! So, the 3D BD should be your reference point!

I have not (yet) the WOWOW files, as this is only an idea, and (still?) not a future project.

Please explain: why I should use LD audio only with open matte sources?

And, regarding the 3D BD of JP1: if all my project is based onto the fact that the LD has better color grading than the BD, and you agreed and liked my project, why now the 3D BD has accurate color grading?!?

I definitely liked your project a lot (and still do)! There's no doubt in that! As it was an extensive restoration of JP, with its original wider framing and the excellent DTS audio! The colour was better than the bluish DVD and Bluray! You put so much effort, and as a fellow JP fan how can I not appreciate it genuinely?

But when I saw the 3D BD the only plus point was the original colour timing and the detail (obviously a 4K scan would have lot of detail). And the 3D BD had cropped too much out of the original framing, resulting in cut-off heads of dinos!

Regarding why you should use LD audio with open-matte source-

because it combines the best of both worlds!

For JP the 1.78:1 HDTV or WOWOW source is only selectively open-matte (during the CG scenes) The standard scenes are all cropped at the sides (from a wider print) to 1.78:1. Even the CG scenes though they have more image at the top and the bottom(not all cg scenes) they lose tiny amout on the right hand side. So if you use the matted BD print or matted wowow print (1.85:1) Then what you are getting is a print that has been initially cropped from a 1.85:1 master to 1.78:1, then has been further cropped to 1.85:1 by putting black bars on top of that already cropped 1.78:1 version (the CG scenes will be taller mind you, some of them at least)!

So the best option (if you want a very good HD version of JP) would be to use an open-matte print (which'll have the same height as the laserdisc) and use the DTS Laserdisc audio!

But with TLWJP its a different story!

The open-matte HDTV version (of TLW) is both taller and wider than the Laserdisc, DVD and BD! I imagine the WOWOW source to have the same open-matte framing!

So, at the end, do exist open-matte HD versions of JP1 and JP2? If so, which are they?

I don't know the name of the masters, but they are the source for the 2D BD.

Both the WOWOW and the BD are doubly cropped (once from the 1.85 to 1.78, then from that 1.78 to 1.85 by putting black bars). Then end result being the edge is cropped out!

IIRC, after I decided to do this (JP2) project, I noted that LD and BD have the same cropping; the JP1 3D BD is more cropped than LD, but probably it's due to the 2D->3D conversion... maybe JP1 2D BD has the same LD cropping; if it's true, the WOWOW should have the same...

well, more confused than ever now... (**/)

The JP1 LD and  the 2D BD don't have the same framing at all, the 2D BD is more cropped than the LD! The Wowow has the same framing as the JP 2D BD, hence its also cropped.

Could you please post some screenshot comparison links? In particular, between WOWOW, BD and (if available) LD?

Papai, as usual you - as a big JP fan - find useful info/links, and you are right about cropping.

I'm really proud of my work on JP1; considering that sources used are only laserdisc, watching it in motion makes me say continually "Isn't bad at all!"... but, unfortunately, I can't exclaim "This is very good!"... I face the reality: this is the best laserdisc-based version ever made, period. But it's the best version at all? Obviously not!

Here you are screenshots comparisons - top [ruLes] taken from VLC, resized at 75%, bottom WOWOW from the link above, resized at 50% - all via MSPaint:

Clearly, my [ruLes] here suffer from bad spatial alignement between the laserdisc captures - or indeed it was a laserdisc problem itself? I can't remember, really... oh, I'm getting too old... well, here we have different framing; the LD has more on top and right, WOWOW more on bottom and left; LD colors are not that good, clouds and trees are pinkish...

Here LD colors are better than the previous image, but have clipping whites problem; cropping are almost the same; WOWOW colors is better, maybe a bit too orange.

Here the LD cropping is better, having more image info on top, left and right, but again pinkish and clipping whites...

***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***   ***

The ideal best version will have the LD cropping, with WOWOW definition and colors (slightly changed, maybe) - the latter should be better than the 2D BD, AFAIK; as it's not possible to do it, I must admit I'd prefer to loose some image portions, but have the best definition and colors, without clipping whites... I must remember to all that, when I started my JP1 project, I was not aware of the WOWOW HDTV, and I've done taking in accounts only the 3D BD.

Conclusion: do anyone needs to have JP1 [ruLes] into their collection? Only if you are a big JP fan that wants to have all the available versions, or is curious about LD soundtracks... if I receive more evidences that WOWOW is better than the 2D BDs, I could really think to do a new project using WOWOW video along LD audio soundtracks...

Andrea,

Search Google images for Jurassic Park Trilogy HDTV rip, you'll find 1.78:1 open-matte images.

If you want to download a open-matte print, here you go-

http://1337x.org/torrent/196526/0/

Screenshots are also provided. This is taller and wider than the wowow and 2D BD version, but less so than the LD one. Its not big in size, you'll need a torrent client like utorrent (available for free) to download this!

Open-matte prints for JP2 and JP3 are also available from the same series (just replace the title names).
