Do these animation films need preservation? — Page 3

hi Andrea,
I know you're busy with your Star Wars projects but I was wondering if these were still captures you were considering doing.

You are right... still working hard on both SET and OUT projects... right now, too!

BUT, this doesn't mean I forgot my intention to capture some Disney cartoon... it's only postponed... I'm still not sure which one I must start with... maybe BatB? TLK? Fantasia? Cinderella? Toy Story?

I think that you should start with BatB, but I'm just biased when it comes to that film. I will say that this film suffered most from altered coloring when it made it to DVD.

Also, It is my understanding, that the CAV LD of Aladdin is superior to the DVD.

I second for BatB, here and also for Aladdin, if possible.

67 - Superman Cartoons Of Max & Dave Fleischer, The (Full Screen - Mono)

I've wanted to get this for ages to check the sources used, as I'm almost positive it is the same master that was cleaned up for Image's DVD release and the later Diamond Anniversary Collection released via Bosko Video. This latter is what I finally tracked down and is the best release to-date not to mention being complete without errors or edits. The Warner version has numerous errors, incorrect cues, soundtrack edits (the line on the new disc is: never ending battle for truth-justice). Plus despite all the work done, it doesn't quite always feel like film or traditional animation anymore. The Bosko release has some artifacts, but dammit it looks stupendous. The audio has some print noise which led me to believe that the LD release may serve for a better source.

The only problems with the Bosko source are that one short is severely deteriorated (Terror on the Midway, as on everything pre-Warner), and that the original release date is superimposed over the beginning over every short.

As far as I can tell it is important to preserve nearly every Disney animated classic LD for edits, color timing, or original audio. Those later 90's era DTS versions must be very nice, but it's still unknown as to how to transfer the stream off of the LD.

Thanks also to this forum, I learned to capture DTS soundtracks from laserdiscs... for now, I can capture the whole DTS audio only, without video, as if I try to capture audio AND video with VirtualDub, the DTS becomes totally unusable after some seconds... but this is still good, as the few seconds in sync at the beginning of each laserdisc side capture is useful to sync the DTS audio only track.

Those are only early tests; hope to start a restoration project with a DTS laserdisc title soon.

On the Darkwing Duck LD (#50), does the Darkly Dawns The Duck episode have the original opening and extra footage that was later cut from the syndicated TV and DVD releases?  If so, I would love to see that one preserved.

I capped a tape of that a few years back.  Can't seem to find my rip of it though.

I might still have the tape somewhere.

The VHS release is the "premiere" version, from what I can tell. I assume the LD would be the same.

DID those  Fleischer superman cartoons ever end up on the anthology blu ray in HD, i heard they did but since i don't own the BD i cannot say whether or not they are.

I am a huge fan of the Fleischer studios work.  I wish Betty Boop and Popeye were on BD too.

I once almost purchased the work in progress version of BATB on laserdisc but noticed its one of the worst rotters on the format so cancelled that purchase.

There was a second run Image did to replace rotted copies for free. It's impossible to tell them from the rotters, but they are out there.

The Japanese pressing (which includes both versions) does not have the same issues.

No HD. They did HD masters but no HD release was ever done. I think some of the errors may have been corrected but not all of them. The ideal thing would be to utilize the Warner restored video with the PCM track of the LD if it is indeed the same source as the uncut and correct Image/Bosko version. I personally prefer the look of the older disc despite damage, but Terror on the Midway looks horrible.

How rare was the japan laserdisc.  I have bought japanese laserdiscs in the past but they were always pricey.

Though that is pretty much the market there, dvd and blu ray are also very expensive.

81 - Tokyo Babylon 1

I know there's a dvd of this.  not sure if any content was changed.

Here you could find an interesting comparison between the LD and DVD version; following that, I like most the LD colors and frame size, and the resolution is not that bad either.

During the "hunt for the BATB laserdisc", I discovered some hidden gems in my collection... I managed to put them all in a single shelf, hope they are all, but maybe I'll find some others in a future search... so I decided to resume this old thread adding the titles I have found that was not mentioned in the first post:

  • 82 - Alice in Wonderland
  • 83 - Aladdin and the King of Thieves
  • 84 - Aristocats, The (CAV)
  • 85 - Bambi
  • 86 - Dumbo (PAL CAV)
  • 87 - Oliver and Company
  • 88 - Pagemaster, The
  • 89 - Pinocchio (CLV)
  • 90 - Return of Jafar, The
  • 91 - Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs (CLV)
  • 92 - Space Jam
  • 93 - Toy Story (PAL)
  • 94 - Who Framed Roger Rabbit (CAV)
  • 95 - Who Framed Roger Rabbit (CLV)

(all added to the first post too)

Particular interesting could be Bambi, Dumbo, Alice in Wonderland; but I need further comments about them - and the others.

let the discussion (re)begin!

It seems there is no widescreen edition of Balto on DVD, and the BD is still TBA... waiting for confirmation!

Edit: answer found here - so, there is NO US widescreen DVD, while we in Europe are lucky enough to have it, plus it's PAL with more resolution... it should be anamorphic, can't remember, with english, italian, spanish and portoguese soundtracks, plus a trailer and a documentary, all things not present in the US DVD... any interest in a preservation?

There is also an HDTV master of Balto which has aired on HDNet and a couple other places.

Andrea, have you considered preserving the LD of Watership Down?  (I know it's not on your list, but I thought that this would be the best thread to ask about it.)  Apparently, it's 1.66:1, which makes it the only OAR release on home video.  All the later DVD and BD releases are cropped to 1.78:1, and the framing looks too tight. The only other option is the OOP UK DVD from Universal, which was cropped to 1.33:1.

I must admit I can't remember if I have ever watched it... maybe, as I have actually watched thousands of films, but my memory lacks lately... (**/)

It seems an interesting animation film, but it's not on my list because I have not it on LD; I could think to make a preservation/restoration project, if only someone would like to send it to me as a Xmas gift... (^^,)

If I had it, I would send it.  I thought that all the LDs were the same AR, but some are 1.33:1, according to LDDb.  It seems we need to track down 34003 or 3127-4.

Would any of the 1.33:1 releases have been open-matte, rather than cropped? I know quite a few animated films were shot at 1.33 and then matted.

Why does Aladdin and the King of Thieves have such a low rating on IMDB? I thought it was a decent sequel.
