Not sure about this but haven't all (or at least most) movies released on MUSE LDs gotten better blu-ray releases or HDTV broadcasts?
I will shortly be selling my X9 laserdisc player and MUSE decoder. If anyone has any HiDef MUSE discs or laserdiscs they want archived, speak up now or forever hold your piece?
I don’t really want to sell it, but need to to fund the Film Archiving gear.

I have no idea, and don't know if any MUSE discs represent 'unaltered' versions of movies not available on BD.
There are 5 pages of titles listed here:

Wow, the X9 is supposed to be an excellent laserdisc player!
I can definitely think really good quality full captures of
THX 1138
and
2001: A Space Odyssey
[Criterion CAV 3-disc Laserdisc set (1989) - Kubrick approved CC]
would be awesome! Do you have those?
I have the Japanese release of THX, not sure re space odyssey, but I will check tonight.

Not like there's a THX LD preservation thread or anything like that around here. ;)
Where were you in '77?
@ SilverWook
LOL :D
But I was thinking of the capture with this machine. Your THX 1138 capture looked good but with this machine it should be awesome, right?
@ poita
Of course, I was thinking of extras on the discs as well, for a complete preservation. Can't pass up these rare opportunities ... as long as you don't mind. ;)
The THX LD is such a dodgy film print and video master to begin with, I'm not sure how much more there is to squeeze out of it. I'm not opposed to trying, but Coily is still going to be stuck in the frame for a good portion of the finale. I'm starting to think I need to sacrifice a goat for decent scope film print to turn up.
I think a preservation of all the 2001 CAV extras is a good idea. The CAV still galleries give my recorder a bit of trouble though. I have the other MGM LD editions with a couple things not on the Criterion.
I was at the Kubrick exhibit in L.A. on the next to last day before it closed. It was so crowded, I didn't watch the video installations in the 2001 section long enough to see if they had any BTS footage not seen elsewhere.

Why not a ton of Criterion LD titles to preserve? Separate DVDs for the movie and extras for each title. DVD9 including commentaries and trailers for movie disc. DVD5 or 9 for the rest of the extras.

Could you rent this one?

Without going through the 56 pages of the THX thread, I have the Japanese LD with the all white cover and THX-1138 written in the middle in metallic writing. Is it worth doing, or has it already been done?

That print is long gone, or so they told me.
I transferred both THX LD's for msycamore, plus the truly awful pan and scan version.
Where were you in '77?
How much do you charge for transfers? :)
Return postage. If in Australia I can cover post, but to OS it gets too expensive for me, so I only ask that people cover the cost of getting the discs back to them. Or if the discs are available locally for less than the cost of return postage then just pay for the discs. Also I may already have the discs sometimes.
But I'm always appreciative of donations :)

Well, since I was the one who asked, I took up The 56-Page Challenge. :)

On page 20, msycamore compares US to Jap captures (Jap were slightly lighter).

On page 31, msycamore compares US/Jap to UK captures (cropping was different -- sometimes critically so).

On page 34, msycamore compares US to Jap captures (across 3 laserdisc players). He also noted, thereafter, "... you can clearly see that the US transfer is the best looking, the Jap have a different black level but it also have lots of chroma noise which is almost totally absent on the US disc."
So, I'd say, if your machine is the best available on the forum and produces noticeably improved captures, go for it anyway ... if you will!
I might just do a capture of one scene and see how it compares.

I still want to see a good archive of this set. If it's not possible I'll see about buying a copy myself.
:)
If you can find one in Australia for a decent price, I'll buy it and transfer it. I'd like to see it myself. I don't have the Criterion version.

Some interesting 2001 release versions info in this thread -- don't worry, only 3 pages this time:
Cinerama 70mm 2001 preservation. Is it possible?
http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Cinerama-70mm-2001-preservation-Is-it-possible/topic/15358/
and of particular note is this referenced article:
The Big Picture: 2001 on Video by Thomas E. Brown
http://www.visual-memory.co.uk/amk/doc/brown2.html
which suggests that the final MGM release (with better detail from 65mm film-to-tape):
The MGM CAV 3-disc 25th Anniversary Laserdisc set (1993)
http://www.lddb.com/laserdisc/04985/ML103104/2001:-A-Space-Odyssey:-25th-Anniversary-%281968%29
may be useful with the Criterion release (Kubrick color correction from 35mm scope) for a merged-version -- like my Disney's Zorro two-source YouTube-color/TV-luminance proof-of-concept:
Bit late I know, but bargain
