Are Muslims really trying to take over, or are some people just suffering from Islamaphobia? — Page 22

I just cannot bring myself to agree with this.  If you're going to make the argument that burkas are demeaning to women, I'd be a bit more sympathetic, even if I don't agree with banning them outright.  But just to say that they need to conform for conformity's sake... well, you should know me well enough by now to know that that's not something I find to be a very compelling reason.  People are individuals, not their place of living.  And while I agree they should be expected to adopt the laws of their new home, it's just silly to expect them to completely alter themselves for the sake of your level of comfort.

Not that that is going to stop you from dreaming… Only in this case, Gaffer is actually a guy.

I'm not saying if you choose to live here then it's paramount you conform to 'western' dress codes? Not for one minute. The hijab is fine. The face s fully presented. The Burka is not fine. These women that either choose to wear it, or are forced by their husbands to, are either sticking 2 fingers up to their adoptive community or are being controlled and demeaned by their spouses. Double edged sword.

I when it happens behind closed doors, I would suggest that victims leave that house and go to the police.

I'm sorry, but that is an incredibly naive over-simplification, on many many levels.

well what would you suggest they do? stay in the house and continue to be beaten?

Warb, that's exactly what many do!  Saying "they shouldn't" doesn't change the reality of the situation.

I think this Palestinian-American blogger has her thinking on the right track on the subject:

http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2013/04/24/is-the-hijab-worth-fighting-over/in-hijab-debate-a-weak-vision-of-feminism

and wouldn't a ban on burkas enforce the idea that women's bodies are not their own?

Yeah, did you not read the little blurb that I linked to and you quoted? That is exactly what it is saying.

I don't think anyone should tell anyone else how they should dress. Unless maybe it is obscene or overly offensive.

They should also investigate what prompted them to do such things. Usually the media produce one-sided news. Not because they would be biased but simply because it makes the news more striking and sensational.

After a little research it seems the flash points for violence were a murder in a gold shop and a woman being doused in petrol and set alight. Both perpetrators were Muslim.

So that's me labelled, wrapped up and marked as being xenophobic and tucked away in the darkened corner of an overly left wing, overly liberal society. Who are willfully blind or dismissive of serious problems that are affecting people that don't live in some nice litte picturesque village in the countryside somewhere (politicians, journalists etc.) it's such a fucking blindingly obvious joke with these liberals when they persecute through the media (BBC being the main culprit) that anyone who questions this agenda is a stupid, racist, xenophobic caveman who's mentality and idealism belongs in the 1950's. it's utter bullshit.

Well people who have issues with Muslims and Islam are clearly just xenophobic lunatics according to you. That's the overall impression you've given.

If you associate yourself with the actions in the linked article

In his recent sermon, [Wirathu] described the reported massacre of schoolchildren and other Muslim inhabitants in the central city of Meiktila in March, documented by a human rights group, as a show of strength.

“If we are weak,” he said, “our land will become Muslim"

you are a xenophobic lunatic.

Funny. I'm curious to know Bingo, where you live in your concrete block in Scotland is it in the midst of a large Muslim community?

I had a genealogical breakthrough last night. Discovered a great-grandparent with the surname Maxon. Apparently that's Scottish?? Woe is me.

I don't live in a block of concrete, the Chateau is in a very small isolated area with only a couple of Muslim families nearby but we do get invaded by Orangemen every marching season much to my annoyance.

The family next door, the best neighbours I've ever had are Catholic so have that bunch of indigenous idiots stomping around waving their history in my face is pretty offensive.

I don't want to kill them though.

Lots of Muslims in Glasgow and Leith on either side of me though.

This is one of the most idiotic things I have ever seen. Just what the hell is wrong with that shirt?

"Obey our laws"? Should people not obey the laws? I guess a criminal reported him to the police because he/she finds obeying the laws offensive...

"Respect our beliefs"? So everyone should respect immigrants' beliefs while demanding them to respect others is something offensive?
