Yeah that is how i interpreted it which means that luke is flying "point"
If he has a rear gunner covering wedge is possible as he does not it does not make sense
If wedge was flying "point" luke would trail and provide cover
I think if Wedge were doing the run on his own there would be more chance of him being picked out by the advancing Walkers....with Luke leading the way & being the decoy, it increased the chance of Wedge doing his run successfully
