Hi. I am new to this forum and this is my first post.
I just have one question regarding the Han-Greedo scene. I was comparing the DVDs of the Theatrical and Special Edition frame by frame and I'm confused about one thing. In the Theatrical, right after Han says "Yes, I'll bet you have." the screen lights up with white light that basically completely covers Han and the screen for one frame. The next frame is a clear shot of Greedo, then the next is a white screen, then the next frame is debris flying. (All this occurs in approximately 1/5 of a second.)
My question is what is the light that covers Han for that one frame? Is that supposed to be the effect from Han shooting his gun from a view we can't see (no laser bolt is visible)? Or is it supposed to be part of the explosion of Greedo? I can see it both ways, but there are problems with each. If it is the effect of his shooting a laser bolt, it seems like way too much light (compared to other laser shots in the movie.) Not only that, but shooting a gun that produces so much light is blinding and hence dangerous to the shooter!
If it's part of the explosion of Greedo, then the next frame, which is Greedo fully intact front view, doesn't make sense logically. (Unless the special effects team wanted to somehow "enhance" the explosion. But this wasn't done for the SE and the explosion of Greedo looks perfectly fine, starting with him front view.)
That frame of white light covering Han and the screen just doesn't seem to fit either of the above two ideas. Also, as a side note, I slowed the movie down about 75% and it seems that Greedo explodes a fraction of a second before you hear the laser shot. I find that more confusing as to what it is. Maybe it was some mistake in the editing? I know they had a small budget when filming Ep IV.
Just curious what anyone's thoughts are as to what the light that covers Han for that one frame is? I guess I may be nit-picking, but it's really bugging me. We all love the original Star Wars and as a result are quite passionate about it. I know I am!
Any thoughts and ideas would be tremendously appreciated.
Thank you.
