LOL. You're a trip.
Anyway, no, America and the U.K. don't seek out immigrants, but they provide a process for those interested to become part of a selection process, they they select from that pool. So yeah, in a manner of speaking, we do "swoop in and take them".
I think this is where the confusion may lie to what's actually happening and the problems that this country is having with immigration. The selection process only applies to people who want to emigrate to here from none EU countries. Anyone inside these EU countries can just walk in and start claiming state benefits and there is nothing we can do about it. The EU commission keep stopping any attempt made by the UK to change the benefits policies. And this is causing the problems here.
When the EU doors opened Britain became flooded with Millions of Eastern Europeans. At this time banks had started making it harder for anyone to get a mortgage and , with house prices souring, it became almost impossible for anyone on an average wage to buy their own house. Private renting also became problematic due to souring rental prices. When someone on minimum wage was earning the same or even Less than landlords were charging for a months rent for a 3 bedroom house, their only chance was social housing. But we were so short of social houses, thanks mainly to Margaret Thatchers scheme to allow people to buy their own council houses at greatly reduced prices. But NONE of this money raised went back into the system to build more houses, like was originally promised. Now, the waiting list to actually get one of these houses is horrendous. The chances are that you'll not get one.
Now, to try and combat this problem the government introduced Tax Credits. This entitled you to help with your rent if you worked. If you were on benefits then your rent would be paid. So people were having to look for private renting because there were no social houses left. But here's where the problem started. You would find a suitable house in your area but the benefits office would refuse to pay your rent because they deemed the rent to be too high. So, again, you were stuck. Thanks to the inflated rental prices.
Now, a little way down the line, we get the mass immigration happen. And guess what??? They were immediately given benefits and housing. They were put to the top of the social housing list. Councils and housing associations were told that they had to find a certain percentage of housing for these immigrants. Suddenly we see people being evicted from their houses for being slightly behind on their rent. Also, people who were near the top of the list, suddenly found themselves a lot further down.
When it started coming out about how many of these immigrants had been housed in luxury housing, multi million pound houses where the tax payer was footing the rental bill, this is where the unrest started happening. When UK citizens were refused housing benefit because the powers that be deemed the prices "too high", for then to allow the immigrants to rent more expensive properties was a huge slap in the face for the UK citizens.
You get all these do gooders over here that say that immigration is not a problem and that we should allow them to integrate with our society, but you usually find out that these same people live in areas unaffected by the recent mass immigration and have no clue about the fact that you'll find that it is in fact the immigrants that refuse to integrate with our society.
Here's examples of what's really happening here;
Government funded day centres set up so Mothers can meet started barring UK citizens claiming they were set up so that immigrant mothers can meet up, even when they were not set up for that reason. Not exactly integrating.
Companies started refusing to employ UK workers and instead were only employing mainly Easter European workers. Walk into a Job centre now and you can see jobs advertised ONLY in a foreign language with no English translation available. UK jobs advertised solely in the EU countries BEFORE they are advertised in this country. Now this is when unemployment is at a record high. The Government want to make it so an employer can sack anyone for no reason without having to worry about that worker taking them to a tribunal, all under the guise of cutting red tape and helping businesses grow. This is only going to make the problem worse. They brainwash the masses to believe that only reason why these companies are employing solely immigrants is that the UK are workshy and didn't want the jobs i the first place. That is complete bullshit. Yes, you have that part of society that refuse to work because they get more on benefits, but that does not reflect the whole of the British workforce.
There was a company where i use to live that was the one place where school leavers in the area were guaranteed a job when they left school. This stopped dead when the flood of Eastern Europeans came over. Now it employs solely immigrants. There isn't a single British person working there apart fro in management. But here's where it takes a different turn. The managers there were told that they had to learn Polish or they would lose their jobs. They protested and said that it should be the workers that were made to learn English and NOT the other way around. When the workers were told this they flatly refused and placed the "racist" card. Guess what, the managers who refused to learn Polish were sacked. That is disgusting. So much for integration. Why should UK people be forced to integrate when the immigrants refuse?
There are a lot of things going on over here that just go unreported. People just haven't got a clue about what's really happening unless they are in an area that has been affected.
There are a HUGE number of these immigrants that come here for the benefits system. At a time when the government are cutting peoples benefits left right and centre, at a a time when disabled people are having their benefits stopped because an outsourced company was put in charge to assess disabled benefit claims assess that these people are fit for work, when they clearly were not. Now the government have introduced the bedroom tax for anyone who receives benefits and live in a house that has a spare bedroom(s). These same people where there are no smaller houses for them to move into so they are stuck.
Funnily enough this does not affect immigrants. Not exactly fair now is it?
The government want to change the benefits system to stop the "benefit tourists" but the EU courts stop them at every turn.
Is it fare that Uk citizens are being refused benefits or any help at all, when they have worked and paid into the system with their taxes and national insurance contributions, while any none Uk citizens can come here and are given benefits and even help so they can claim everything that may be entitled to (something UK citizens are not)
Is it fare that they can claim benefits for their families that don't even live in this country?
The government use the same old excuse that immigration can only benefit this country and the economy. Bullshit. When so many of them send a huge portion back home, that money is NOT being ploughed back into our economy.
People are being brainwashed into thinking its a good idea. It's not.
If i emigrated to another country then i would expect myself to learn their language and integrate into their culture and follow their laws. So why should i expect and different from anyone that wants to live here?
But when they refuse to integrate into our culture, then why should we be forced to integrate their culture into ours? It's not being a "bigot" or a "racist" to speak out about these things.
So why are we refusing entry to people outside of the EU that could actually benefit this country? There are NO criminal checks done on any of the immigrants coming from within the EU countries. When they commit serious crimes we are then unable to deport them back to their country because "their human rights" would be violated. What about the human rights of their victims? We have the hate preachers over here that are living in luxury on state benefits, while spewing their bile and hatred towards all none Muslims. These same people are linked directly to the extremists that have carried out terrorist attacks upon this country. They are allowed to preach on the streets with nothing done to them. But dare you say anything against them and you can be arrested.
A recent case happened in my old town of Shrewsbury. There is the old Registrar office that was being sold off. Now this is an old historic building. Groups applied to turn this building into things like cancer support centres but were flatly refused with the powers that be claiming that it would create too much of a disturbance to local residents thanks to parking problems. Now this building is worth around £600,000. Then it was announced that it had been sold for just £225,000 to a Muslim group that were now going to set up a prayer centre. So why all of a sudden is the parking issues no longer a problem? There have been a lot of protests there due to this. But every opposition to it has been labelled "racist". And, funnily enough, the residents there no longer have a say in the matter.
A petition and a facebook group were set up against the proposed plan. But facebook removed the page claiming it was set up solely to create racial hatred, which it was not, and the petition was ignored. Now people have been arrested over racial remarks made on this page. Two white males were arrested for remarks made. But why was the Muslim guy who posted on the same page, to which these remarks were made, not arrested? Here is what he posted which started it all:
"All you white bastards need to get over yourselves. Islam is taking over. There is no denying it. Embrace Islam or face slaughter. "
Now, at first, this was claimed to be someone with a fake account stirring up trouble. But no. It was a real person. A Muslim that lives in the town. But he was not arrested and the police said they would be taking no action against him. This is what is stirring racial hatred. Why is it acceptable to one person to bring colour into an argument in a defamatory manner, while it is unacceptable for another? Surely it shouldn't matter what colour you are, if you make a remark about the colour of another then that is indeed racism. It shouldn't be just a white person that can be branded and judged as being a racist. You should be treated equally no matter what colour you are. But until the powers that be understand and accept that, racial tensions will only continue to rise.
The UK is not against immigration. But we are against those who come here just for our benefit system.
I wonder how many of these people that come here would stay if all these benefits were not available for them? And by benefits i mean not just the money, but the instant housing and all the other benefits involved. We are only a small island and we are at bursting point. Now there are two more countries joining the EU and guess where they want to head in their millions?
Brilliant post Adywan.
By the time the three colours of Tory are finished there won't be any Welfare State to worry about protecting.
However if you want to waltz into Spain or France and start claiming their benefits or have you teeth done on the cheap in Poland there's nothing stopping you.
The EU immigration door swings both ways.
The real loss in sovereign powers has come from the political parties all becoming the same with different colour rosettes.
If you can't vote for different policies apathy sets in an people just don't bother voting at all leading to the brain damaged cartoons we have for a political class at the moment.
It's why I'm voting yes for Scottish Independence.
The results of every election in Scotland since the 1950s has had zero impact on who gets in at Westminster.
We have one Tory MP (we have more Pandas).
That's one thing that really annoys me. this government is fine with giving Scotland the vote to leave the UK but we are not allowed a vote to see if we want to stay in the EU.
And we can't go abroad and claim their benefits because the EU made sure that it's the Uk that foots the bill for any benefits, unless they give up their Uk citizenship. Bloody ex pats get the winter fuel payments when they live in a hot country. And the Eu won't let us put a stop to that.
I don't believe that you should be allowed to go to any country to sponge off their system. You should have to prove that you would be a benefit to their society, not just to sponge off their benefits system.
And you can't go to Poland and get any medical procedure done for free, unlike here, so the door doesn't really swing both ways.
The EU only benefits those in power. The sooner we are no longer part of it, the better.
You might not be able to get free treatment in Poland but you can get Dental treatment often cheaper and quicker than the UK.

I agree on that. But do not expect things will change if you become independent. It will just be projected to Scotland level. You will still have parties with no real difference between each other. So in the end whoever you vote you get the same crap.

As long as you not want so see al German in that stupid bavarian leather trousers.
I won't say that WalMart is that far from German shopping behaviours, don't forget that we have Metro and Aldi coming from Germany. And Germany always was kind of a melting pot of cultures.
But, I think it is not a good thing that it is so difficult, to held people who exploit a social system accountable. It is one thing if someone just cannot work, but it is another thing not even trying.

So America are now prepared to arm the Syrian Rebels because they say that the president has used chemical weapons. I'd be very wary of this. It was a very small amount used. Doesn't this ring alarm bells with anyone? Top experts have warned that these weapons were used by the rebels (the UN's investigator Carla del Ponte informed them about this after her investigation), in order to get the support of other nations and they were not used by Assad. But what's more worrying is that it is known that Al Qaeda is fighting alongside the rebels (same thing as what was happening in Lybia). So, if America start providing this military support, they are in danger of arming those they are supposed to be fighting against.
There are some terrible things happening over there, but is it all that we are being told it is? Rebels executed a 15 year old boy in front of his parents because they claimed he used the profit Muhammad's name in an offensive manner. And we've seen the pictures of the rebels eating one of the government soldiers hearts. Is this really the type of people that we should be helping? Also videos of Rebels training to use chemical weapons surfaced.
I'm hoping the Uk stays well out of this but the chances of that happening are slim to none. Shouldn't we be listening to those independent investigators instead of brushing their reports to one side without any evidence to refute their reports?
And, before any one suggests that this is another Anti-American post by a Brit, it isn't. I'm curious to know what you guys over there think about all this.
It's already starting, and with China, Russia and Iran supporting Assad. Oh boy. This will undoubtedly end in tears.

I don't think so.
The general ethos of Scotland is of the Northern European Socialist model. The turn out for Scottish elections tends to be higher.
We already have a wide range of political parties. With independence there would be more competition between the left wing parties and the right wing parties would have to think of different policy strategies from their UK counterparts which may lead to actually winning some seats.
There would be new parties too (presumably some campaigning for re-joining the Union in some way).
I'm no fan of the EU but the SNP is so after Independence I doubt if I would continue to vote for them.
Scottish Independence could be the best thing to happen to the UK since the end of WW2.

The UK government didn't have a choice. The SNP won an election with a clear mandate (unlike the parties which form the Westminster government). A referendum was one of it's manifesto pledges. Indeed when the SNP wanted to wait to prepare for the referendum the other parties were pushing them to get it out of the way as quickly as possible and have been fear mongering about it from day one.
Labour and the Conservatives both promised a referendum on the EU in the past and neither fulfilled their manifesto commitments.

Well we too have a wide range of political parties. Their names and rhetoric is different but when they come to power they are all the same. It may be so because of the fact that democracy's main goal is to preserve itself which limits the actions of the government. The other reason is probably because there are so many centre parties (and only them get elected) so then it is the same crap if you get left-centre or right-centre.
I am not arguing that Scotland won't get more political power with independence. I am just saying that you, as a voter, won't get any more power or alternatives.

I might be completely wrong but I was under the impression that UK fuels your current social benefits (such as free universities). Are you sure you are economically strong enough on your own to be able to retain those things or even incorporate more social benefits to follow that ethos?

You are completely wrong. It's a myth.
More money leaves Scotland for the rest of the UK than comes in and our economy is in a generally better state than the rest of the UK.
We would be better off. It would also be less undemocratic for the rest of the UK not having Scottish MPs voting on non-Scottish matters when English, Welsh and Northern Irish MPs can't vote in the same way on exclusively Scottish matters.
The last time the Conservatives got a majority in Scotland was 1955. I think that says all you need to know about the voting options of an independent Scotland.
Returning to the main subject, it's a classic case of scapegoating.
The finances of the world have dipped (the economic cycle does this two or three times a century) so there is a quest for an 'other'.
In the 30's and 40s 'the other' were the European Jews, the myth was global Zionism.
Now it's European Muslims and the myth is the global Caliphate.
In reality it's the mega rich pulling in their tentacles a little after a dissapointing few years at the casino markets causing everyone else to feel the pinch.

I think a no immigration stance is legit enough as well. I love cultures. My career, when I'm working in it, is heavily related to culture. I have a good deal of cross-cultural experience. A fellow expatriate buddy of mine and I used to talk about America being a salad, when you come to America, you are expected and allowed to be whatever you are. It is like the salad bowl in the middle of the dinner table. Everyone dishes a little bit of it out onto their own plates. They have a plate full of their own main course and sides, and they also have a serving of the salad. As an American, when I travel to or live in other countries, I am expected to blend. If I don't know the language, eyes roll. When I do something culturally unkosher or somehow demonstrate my inevitable ignorance of local norms and mores in some way, big or small, people sigh, "silly American" and shake their heads.
"When in Rome, do as the Romans do; when in The United States, do as you would at home." My buddy and I would lament that while everyone else at the table has their own plates of food, we simply have an empty plate in front of us filled with the same salad in the middle of the table that everyone else is dishing up freely. We were stuck in a culturally devoid expanse, looking at all this rich culture at the table around us, but only able to smell its delicious odors and watch others enjoy it as we slowly munched on our bland salad. This is why we were both expatriates, why we both sought out and seized opportunities to immerse ourselves in these foreign worlds. Even if those other dishes could never be ours, we wanted to surround ourselves with people we could live vicariously through; so we could watch longingly with rumbling stomachs as they partook of their exotic cuisines.
I hated seeing Wal-Mart in Germany and McDonald's in France. I wanted to see these cultures untouched. When in Germany, I wanted to see Germany, not Germany with some America sprinkled on top. When in France I wanted to see France. When in England I wanted to see England and English people, not another melting pot like the States. Unfortunately to a degree (but not all bad), we live in a global world climate and the world is shrinking fast. I'd loved to see European countries hold back the night and maintain their own identities. So don't misunderstand me, we have far more in common on this topic than you think.
But there's never been a static culture, and those that try to be (the Amish, the Japanese in the past) are completely defined by their unnatural desire to be static.
The "German" culture we know today is a moment in time, an snapshot of cultures meeting, merging, taking, losing, changing, adapting. Anything we might call the "English"/"UK" culture is a total and constantly changing hodgepodge; the "American" culture even moreso. I toured the beautiful mosques in Spain, and have seen the first Christian monasteries in Scotland; antique signs that no culture ever stays the same.
The idea of "preserving" a culture is completely artificial to what cultures are. It's even a little paternalistic when we apply it to people like un-contacted tribes.
I agree with you that the American culture is a deep, and wonderful thing, and from sea to shining sea I love it (except South Carolina... they know why). But I can't sit listening to my Irish-inspired Appalachian banjo music, eating my tex-mex lunch, sitting in my Tudor style living room, and think outside influences somehow lessens a culture.
Anyone under any illusions to what the term 'racist' implies and the extent of the Muslim problem in the UK, NEEDS to watch this.
So what is your solution to the Muslim...question?
Well..an admission from the government that there is a serious problem with the immigrant Muslim population integrating into the indigenous culture and population would be a start. Their subsequent failure to do so. Their admission that radical and fundamental Islam does not adhere with western life, and Muslim community leaders need to take massive responsibility and notable action in addressing this problem. Not just words but ACTION if they REALLY oppose these radical views? And sack and shame every left wing cunt from the BBC who actively looks to question this problem by publically labelling those who do so as being racist. Good enough?
The problems with immigration in the UK remind me of the problems with immigration in the US. Rather than eastern europeans it's Mexicans, but the same concerns about jobs and welfare are being raised. When it comes to Mexicans, one is said to be racist if one expresses reservations. I think it's useful to hear how the same kinds of issues are debated elsewhere...
The blue elephant in the room.
This is the problem though Western Life as you call it, is a complex entity.
I would have been burned at the stake here for a variety of reasons not too long ago and Western society contains a large nugget of Islam (it also has a nice side order of Mexican too).
The islamic fundamentalists are a tiny subgroup of a minority they wield very little influence over you compared to the even smaller minority of megarich people in this country. Some of which are Arabs incidentally (got rich on oil) and none of which are Islamists. The Islamic Rentamobs make a big noise in the press and on the telly but who owns those?
The lefty has a point it's not the wacky extreme end of the Muslim community you have to worry about. It's the greedy capstone on the money pyramid pulling your strings.
There's still time, Bingo!
The problem is not the tiny subgroup of demonstrably dangerous deviants. It's the large mass of enablers. In our society, those enablers are typically liberals. Then those lefties, as you call them, blind themselves to the truth to continue their enabling in good conscience, more or less.
The blue elephant in the room.

So you just kinda want someone in official ranks to say, Bad Muslims are Bad, and all Muslims need to take action for it? Would an MP be enough, or does it have to be the queen? Can there be a vote? What percentage do you need?
I'm curious if any fundamentalist religion fits with the general umbrella of Western life (a somewhat nebulous term when it applies to both Sweden and Texas). Do you want the government to condemn fundamentalist Christians, Jews, or Asatru?
No you misunderstand Boost (the Queen indeed! Lol)
These few would be a start.
1. Heavy penalties for Mosques that knowingly allow extreme Imams to preach at their mosques and jail time for repeat offenders. Also the banning of extremist preaching at universities, in the street and everywhere else besides mosques.
2. English language, and UK history and culture to be taught compulsory at every Mosque for Muslims who do not know how to speak the language and are oblivious to UK history. And then tested by an independant adjudicator on their fluency and knowledge.
3. NO Sharia courts in the UK. You live by our laws when it comes to family matters like every other resident of the population.
4. The banning of the Burka as its a security risk.
5 .(this ones all encompassing, not just Muslims) Child Benefit only payed for 1st 2 children and then your on your own. For new immigrants no benefits and healthcare until you have paid into the system for 2 years.
If You come to actively integrate and contribute you will live a good life. If you don't? Then these are the rules and if you don't agree? Tough shit.
And by the way. Are fundamentalist Christian and Jews causing worldwide disharmony in societies due to mass immigration and intolerance?

Oh, I completely agree about any given culture today merely being a snapshot in time that will inevitable be different just a mere generation down the road. But the thing is, I myself am also subject to time, I can't go visit Germany in the 1920's, or see 1960's England for myself. The best I can do is visit these places within the period of time I am locked into. It is the thought of all these places becoming more and more alike that is disappointing to me. Seeing the same shops and brands and food and television, regardless of what borders I am behind.
I grant you that my complaint may be kind of pithy, and the threat isn't as dire as I am sure to make it. I want England speckled in red porn plastered phone booths, and hole in the wall pubs, not a bunch of Eastern looking Mosques. For my Eastern looking Mosques I want to have to go to places like Turkey, Albania, or further East. I love the variety the world has to offer, and the idea of cultures beginning to merge and the world continually shrinking always makes me a bit sad.
Also, I am not denying that every culture inevitable has influences from other cultures. It is part of what is cool about it. It is really fascinating picking out the foreign influence and the historical reasons for why those influences exist. It is not as fun when that influence is a bunch of massive golden "M" shaped arches around any given city with American capitalism as the reason.

This one isn't a bad idea. In the US, we would probably see this as a violation of freedom of speech and freedom of religion, but much of what is taught by some of these guys is easily categorized as hate speech. However, this would have to be handled very delicately, it could easily be spun as repression.
This is the sort of thing where it is easy to fall into an Us vs. THEM standstill, rather than an issue of right and wrong. Peace loving Muslims ought to be just as condemning of an Imam that teaching extremism and violence (just as most American Christians will quickly condemn the Westborro Baptist), but if we hold an antagonistic relationship with them, it would be easy for them to see it as see it as more opposition to their religion rather than just opposition to violent extremist teachings. This is why I think it is wise to choose your battles. Are Burkas and street signs in Arabic really worth bitching about? These things may be silly or annoying, but also mostly harmless. Let them know we support and welcome them, while expelling the extremes and the intolerant aspects. In this way you are more likely to get them on your side in fighting against the dangerous and extreme aspects of their religion, which many of them disagree with anyway, rather than leaving them feeling like they are on the defense.
2. English language, and UK history and culture to be taught compulsory at every Mosque for Muslims who do not know how to speak the language and are oblivious to UK history. And then tested by an independant adjudicator on their fluency and knowledge.
Taught at Mosques? Are we talking Mosque that contain private schools? Or just normal houses of worship? Islamic private schools could be a dangerous thing. Education is the best cure for ignorance, but if ignorance is allowed to be taught in some schools, there is definitely an issue there.
3. NO Sharia courts in the UK. You live by our laws when it comes to family matters like every other resident of the population.
Absolutely! This should be a given. Any country that is willing to let Sharia into their court system is asking for it and just plain stupid. I'm with you 100% here. Religious freedom shouldn't extend to allowances for things that are otherwise illegal (maybe with a few small exceptions. For example, I appreciate that the use of ayahuasca, a potent hallucinogen, is legal in the US for practitioners of Santo Daime, even though I can't legally acquire ayahuasca for my own personal use. Of course, I think ayahuasca and other safe hallucinogens ought to be legal anyway).
4. The banning of the Burka as its a security risk.
Burkas bother me. I absolutely hate what they represent. But I have a hard time getting behind this one.

I like this one. It would definitely slow down immigration of the parasitic class. Requiring two years before you can receive UK health benefits would ensure those coming there for it would be in it for the long haul, and not just taking advantage. The system is going to break if anyone in the damn EU can just cross the border and get in line without paying a pence.
One of my most pleasant medical experiences was a minor procedure I had done in London. It was the second time I had the procedure done, the first time being in America, where it didn't take. Even with insurance paying the majority of the cost, my parent's part of the bill was almost $700 dollars for this ten minute minor corrective procedure. I walked everywhere when I lived abroad and my foot was in constant pain, while visiting London one time I decided to see if I could get something done about it. A mere $200 dollars later, and I haven't had any trouble with it since. Even without the healthcare benefits of citizens, medical care in the UK is relatively inexpensive. Anyone ought to be able to wait out the two years, as long as life saving medical intervention is an exception. If they can't wait it out, then staying home might be a good option for them.
Ugh, and children. In the US incentives for having children are annoying. All it does is encourage people who can't even afford to support themselves to have liters of kids. We need incentives for the more affluent and educated to reproduce, not incentives for every obese single woman to fill every corner of her trailer with grimy FAS suffering children so our tax dollars can pay for them.
And by the way. Are fundamentalist Christian and Jews causing worldwide disharmony in societies due to mass immigration and intolerance?
They are not. I completely agree that the Muslim issue is a real legitimate problem. But I feel there is a better way to go about it than outright discrimination, which is what some of your solutions sound like to me.
Again, it is hard not to draw the parallels between this and the "Mexican problem" in the US. A lot of people are scared shitless because some formerly white regions have become mostly brown, complete with signs in Spanish, and many people that don't understand more than a handful of words in English. These areas often come with high crime rates, which is a real issue. Forcing conformity to US culture in these areas would accomplish nothing, high crime rates are due to poverty and poor or ineffective education. Those are the issues that need to be addressed in these regions, not limiting the "brown" influence or making sure middle aged immigrants are required to learn English.
For the most part the issue is ignorance. These people had the misfortune of being born into cultures that collectively believe in and value this backwards archaic bullshit. Education is the key here, not discrimination and ill attitudes which will only ramp up the distrust and discord.

These few would be a start.
1. Heavy penalties for Mosques that knowingly allow extreme Imams to preach at their mosques and jail time for repeat offenders. Also the banning of extremist preaching at universities, in the street and everywhere else besides mosques.
This one isn't a bad idea. In the US, we would probably see this as a violation of freedom of speech and freedom of religion, but much of what is taught by some of these guys are teaching is easily categorized as hate speech.
CP3S is right it would be a violation. Conservatives hate "hate speech" laws. And liberals love non-Christian religions. So it would be a non-starter here in the US anyhow.
The KKK, Westboro, whoever...has the right to express their views, however extreme. Only if imminent lawlessness is intended and likely from the speech can it be punished.
I think there are really good reasons for that, no matter what country one lives in. There's also the slippery slope problem once you start calling some speech inherently dangerous.
2. English language, and UK history and culture to be taught compulsory at every Mosque for Muslims who do not know how to speak the language and are oblivious to UK history. And then tested by an independant adjudicator on their fluency and knowledge.
Telling religious organizations what they should teach also rubs against the American conception of freedom. Schools should be required to teach english. And if someone doesn't learn your language...then what?
For example, I appreciate that the use of ayahuasca, a potent hallucinogen, is legal in the US for practitioners of Santo Daime, even though I can't legally acquire ayahuasca for my own personal use).
Agreed, should be a given. Respect should be given to cultural understandings and importance (as is given to the Amish in the US), but everyone should be under the jurisdiction of the same sets of laws.
4. The banning of the Burka as its a security risk.
Burkas bother me. I absolutely hate what they represent. But I have a hard time getting behind this one.
I'm with CP3S here. I thought France's ban was heavy-handed. A Burka is not a security risk any more than a backpack or a large coat.
The blue elephant in the room.
The Burka is not compulsory in Islam. There are already cases arising where it has been used as a guise to commit crimes. Plus it is a very unsocial statement (in my view) and its wearers are basically saying 'I don't want to be part of your society'. The English and History being taught in Mosques was aimed at Muslim immigrant adults who arrive in the UK. And if they don't or refuse then I'm sorry what is your purpose of moving here? You will not be able to find a job without being able to speak English and having some general knowledge of the history and culture of your adoptive country is very beneficial. If you've come for a better quality of life then its hardly a massive sacrifice to do this is it? Failure to do this will ultimately result in deportation. 3 strikes and your out if you will. Those with liberal minds amongst you will probably be choking over your coffee at this one, but I see it more as tough love. Being cruel to be kind. They will ultimately reap the benefits of it.
