DJ, did you look into the Australian release? If so, anything of interest there? While I understand its from the same munted master as all the rest, I've read suggestions that it has its own unique peculiarities and isn't a direct port of the other discs.

No I have not, I would like to but I do not know anyone who has this version.

Hmmm. Some fella over at the blu-ray.com forums posted screens from the Aussie version of some of the notorious problem shots. Perhaps you could tell from these whether or not they correlate with any other source out there?

Thanks for those, I wish there were the same screenshots available of the Japanese release for comparison, because as of now we are liking the Japanese better, by any chance at blu-ray.com is there these same screens for the Japanese release?

Thanks again

Some of them roughly match the shots here:

I know that a few people took my Suspria and ripped the audio, posting it online for others to use. A few took that, made their own and took credit for it. Whatever. No big whoops. I just wish they'd give credit where credit is due.

For me, credit goes to drsd2kill. He's the man. he made Suspiria happen. Without him, it wouldn't have happened.

Hey DJ, PM sent back-

ahhhhh thanks for posting that name. Hey DJ that anchor bay with laserdisc audio was from Matt's friend. Hey Matt I was talking with your friend quite a bit concerning the My bloody valentine dvd, though on the imdb.com forums I go by a different name than Tranzor

Thank you for that, at least now I got to see 3 screens form the Anchor Bay DVD.

By any chance was there an HDTV broadcast of this? the reason I ask is there is just no way to get these colors exactly like the AB DVD, no way at all, especially in the really bad spots, overall something can be done I am pretty sure of that, but to get it exact even in the what some are calling "the trouble spots" this just is not going to happen.

Not for nothin' but some guy on Youtube put his 35mm IB Tech screening up in its entirety and besides a flicker on this video transfer due to the mismatch of frame-rates between camera (30fps) and projector (24fps), the damn thing is pretty cool.  I'd never seen this film (I know, I know) but you guys got me curious.  So I just watched the whole thing and man, it was awesome.

I guess the colors are right at least.

Especially at 41:00 on, when Daniel (the blind pianist) enters the school and then when the child is attacked by his dog (note how there is none of the hot pink, nor color bleeding such as on the UK blu-ray).

Dark Jedi: have you or You_Too thought of contacting this guy?

No we have not, but it sure would be nice to have a nicer scan of this, I can't watch that video for to long lol, flickers way to much for me.

It would be price prohibitive to go so far as scan sections of his print.

Know that the main focus of this thread so far seems to have been Suspria, but how does the French Wild Side release of Inferno compare to the US and the Koch? I plan on picking it up since I'm going there soon. (I also might end up ordering the German BD too if the quality is not satisfactory enough though.)

EDIT: Just realized I can't pick up the German even if I wanted to. I'm not region free sadly enough. So, it seems the Wild Side would really be great if someone could verify it's all right.

Hello. I too have the Image LD, albeit elsewhere. It'll be awhile before I can dig it up. That said, there's a local guy who does great LD transfers, including digital out captures at 44.1kHz. I have several other LDs I need him to transfer. When I finally get a chance to get the remaining LDs I want ripped, I'll check back and see if anybody still needs a rip.

By the way, I have an unrelated request. Can anybody help me acquire a Japanese DVD? It's only available via third parties at Amazon Japan, so somebody would need to have it shipped to Japan and then ship it to me. (None of them will ship outside Japan.) I'm more than happy to pay all costs, plus a little extra for their time.

Thanks.

@flashback8: I've bought DVDs from Japan before through this site: http://www.i-tm4u.biz

They're very friendly and helpful and if I remember correct they can buy basically anything for you, of course with a fee for being middlehand but it's worth it.

Thanks! I had never heard of them. I just paid for the DVD. Hopefully everything goes smoothly.

I just wanted to post and say this is not dead, we will revisit it when we have time and figure out what approach we are going to take, but on a positive note, I do finally have the bit perfect PCM from the LD, and it is a raw rip NO equalizing or tampering of any kind, I am going to leave it exactly the way it is on the LD, and it sounds nice! well I just wanted to say this is not forgotten, we are just very close to getting others done now.

Thanks for your time

OH, and a HUGE thanks to the member that got this for us, we can't thank you enough!

Matt_Stevens, your celebrated Suspiria project isn't still available at this time is it?  Would love to see that one as I never got a chance... either way looking forward to this one as well.

It's around but I have not seeded it in years. Working on a BluRay version.

I know this has been on hiatus for awhile, but a few points of info:

Suspiria- I assume this is on hold, pending the Synapse and TLE restorations coming in the next year. Gives sources to work with much better than what is already available.

Inferno- Is the German BD definitely going to be the basis for the custom BD? The Arrow is grain-reduced and the Blue Underground has contrast boosting/revisionist color timing.

However, there is the French Wild Side release which has not received much coverage. It seems a bit bright, but grain structure is good. There are forced subs, which could easily removed. I have a copy and could post screen caps to compare with another edition. Any interest?

The Mother of Tears- There's a new German BD. Same issues, which may stem from the bad final DI.

Hello, I stumbled onto this board a few moments ago and have noticed a repeated interest in the Japanese release of the trilogy. My contribution may be moot at this point, but I created this account for the purpose of responding to that interest.

I picked up the blu-ray box set of the trilogy in Tokyo. It's region free, by the way. All three films are presented in the highest quality I've ever seen or heard them. I'm not technically savvy but I know what was coming from my sound system was ferocious. Suspiria, in particular, was a new experience. A pretty terrifying one at that. I'd been mesmerized by it before many times, but I was hearing things in the soundtrack I'd never heard before. On top of that, each film looks breathtaking. Well, okay, Mother of Tears is often so natural to look at, so the lushness of the previous films remains absent.

I'm a cultist. I have the three-disc Anchor Bay of Suspiria, as well as other releases of Inferno. I can't recommend the Japanese set enough, but only is you are specifically hunting down prints of the film. Aside from a small booklet (essay in Japanese) and an attractive enough display case, it's a very basic, very expensive buy. I purchased it for $300 in 2013. However, if you can afford the monetary hit, get your hands on it. These are the only versions of the films I will watch now.

By now, as I've come in quite late to the party, I hope you've discovered the Japanese for yourself and enjoy it as much as I do. I'm always interested in releases that might be similar to my own. If you can recommend a release even more effective, I'm all ears. Otherwise, I hope I've been of some help.

SUSPIRIA has received a 4k scan from Technicolor with Don May Jr. of Synapse in charge of a 2015 release. Knowing his care of quality I have no doubt we will finally receive a definitive version of this film on Blu-Ray.

Author

I know Synapse is working on this but who knows when we will see it, but for now I have read nothing but positive reviews on this release, I may go ahead and do up a Trilogy BD50 for now until the Synapse version comes out, plus we don't know for 100% certainty that they will even fix ALL issues, I certainly hope so but still to early to really tell, but this is the release I am talking about, what do you all think of this and check out the specs, would the LD audio even still be needed now?
