Do you think Disney will release the unaltered versions for DVD and blue ray?

I want to know what you guys think. I also want to know If you think they might take out all the bad stuff out of the special editions such as the Jabba the Hut scene in a new hope, but keep the extra CGI spaceships, Backgrounds and enhanced quality of the film.

Id love to see improved Lightsabers In the Special Editions, which the haven’t really done anything with.

They wouldn't be unaltered if they keep some of the CGI, right? :)

And I don't think they need to "take out all the bad stuff". In 1995 they restored the originals for what was to become the special editions, hand-wiping the negatives and everything. I bet they must have kept the pre-CGI versions of that restoration somewhere.

Not exactly on topic, but when I watched Anatomy of a Dewback, it was so sad to see people so careful when cleaning the original negatives saying they were pieces of history and how everyone was so careful they wouldn't be damaged... and then they ruined them. It was really sickening to watch.

I think this petition now has a lot more input than it did before. This was never a lost cause but now more than ever there's reason for hope. Yeah, if we keep the pressure on, sooner or later Disney will cave.

All I really want is each film as it was originally seen and heard in theaters; no fixes, corrections, "improvements" or modifications necessary.

One of my major gripes with the current releases is the lightsaber replacement. The originals are beautiful. I certainly hope they do nothing with them except reinstate the originals.

That said, I'm not fundamentally opposed to improving the film if it actually *improves* the film rather than simply changing or even degrading it for no reason. There are a lot of the original effects that just don't fly. The original mos eisley escape being a notable one. That's one of the few CGI scenes from the special edition I really enjoy.
The new mos eisley reveal shot also is quite beautiful, and is another of my special edition favorites. It's clearer and much more realistic than the original muddy image.

If those were the only kind of "improvements" made to the film, I wouldn't mind. Although the unaltered versions should of course be an option no matter what.

I reiterate what I've said in other threads on this topic:

For each of the three movies, give me a three-blu-ray set that includes all theatrically-released versions of the films. This would mean the original (1977/81, 1980 and 1983), special edition (1997) and 3D (2014/15) versions. This would be the Blade Runner treatment for the OT as far as I'm concerned. Use seamless branching for the '81 ANH crawl and we're good.

There's debate to be had on what sources would be used for the original vfx shots. Correct me if I'm wrong, but those sections of the o-neg had completely faded and had to be re-composited digitally for the SE. I'm sure there are non-fade sources out there for those shots (seps perhaps), so there are probably ways of including these shots in a hypothetical OOT restoration without re-compositing them (which shouldn't be done if we're gonna call this the original version).

I'd also like 100% original versions of the prequels, with TPM rebuilt from the filmout tapes they used for the blu-ray and 3D conversion, and an AOTC without that ugly teal cast and seamlessly branched to include the 35mm, digital and IMAX cuts of the film.

I think they would release an unaltered versions. Disney has the best restores out there. But it would not be an unaltered version if they don't remove the CGI. Don't get me wrong I like the S.E.s as well. But I bet if they get a lot of money for the Episode II and III 3D release, then they might restore the originals or they are cleaning them right now.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

some of the old versions starting with GOUT.

Don't give them any ideas like that! :P

Mike Verta has at least given us hints in the past that Lucasfilm has far better scans on their servers than the ones used for the GOUT.

I'm of the opinion that it's not "if" as much as it is "when" on this one. However, I do have my reservations as to whether or not they'll treat it with respect. We could end up with an OUT release that has the same mangled colors as the SE.

True, but then we (OTcom) can fix them!

Nah, joking. I'm 99.9% sure that if they release the originals, they won't look nearly as bad as the 2004/2011 SE. Those were based on the 97 SE and recolored in a horribly amateur-ish way. If they scan some original prints or negatives (or use whatever hi-def scan is on their servers) I'm sure it will look more natural like the originals should.

Do we know the names of the people responsible for this amateur work?

I'd be interested to see what they have to say for themselves.

Fox is still distributing I-VI until 2020, at least, so isn't this a moot point?

"The 2004 SE (it has never been marketed as a Special Edition, though there really is no other label to describe it) had its color correction guided and supervised by George Lucas himself. Screening the film at Skywalker Ranch, Lucas went through the film with members from ILM, who would be color-timing the digitized film themselves at Lucas' approval."

No.

Although Fox does have the distribution rights (currently), Disney will be the ones that decide when & if something is to be distributed.

It's not a moot point, because Fox will distribute anything Lucasfilm/Disney gives them the green light to distribute. They have no creative control over Star Wars. It's just more product for them.

35mm Kodak and IB Technicolor prints are already in good hands and are being digitally restored. Owners of the former plan to distribute once they're done.

Here's something I just thought of.

http://secrethistoryofstarwars.com/savingstarwars.html

Reading this, it says that they had to restore the original films completely before making any alterations. (Why they didn't make a video transfer from that restored negative and make that the "One Last Time" vhs/laserdisc set I do not know)

To make the alterations they scanned that restored negative at 2k and added computer effects, then basically printed that to film and either spliced the modified scenes into the original negative or just made a new print. From there they made the 1997 theatrical prints and video versions.

Now, at the time a 2k scan for something that was going to have added CGI was pretty good. However, by the time Disney gains control of the films, there will probably be demand to make a new transfer for a theatrical re-release of the OT. (like how Episode 1 got a new transfer because it had a 3-D re-release) The existing Blu-ray is sourced from a 2004 1080p scan. That looks pretty good on video but it certainly won't cut it for the big screen or IMAX, especially with improved video technology in 5 years.

So if Disney wants to get a 4k scan to use to show any version, they will have to go back to the original negative. But they can't use the SE parts, that will only get them 2k. So they would have to rescan the unaltered negatives at 4k, then if they wanted to either upscale or redo the CGI over the existing scenes.

Because hard drive space is no longer such a premium like it was in 1997, it would be very easy to save a digital 4k copy of the unaltered parts and the new SE version. And digital editing makes it a snap to assemble either version in high quality simultaneously without splicing film any further.

With a high quality copy of the originals acquired anyways through the process of making a new master, Disney will probably figure "well a lot of people are interested in this version. Since we have it available, we might as well sell it."

There's no reason to believe if Disney obtains a high quality version of the OOT, they won't make it available. What I'm not sure is that if Disney will want to restore the OOT if it require extra effort on their part beyond what they will do to present the films in 3-D. But if they're going to get the unaltered version restored along the way, then why not. But it's not like they're going to be in any rush, this is the company that only makes their most desired animated films available for a limited time so they can keep people interested in them. So they probably figure that by 2020, the unaltered dvd's will be even harder to find and more sought after so that the demand will be greater if they wait until then anyways.

So what do you guys think? Am I right? Did I get the specs correct from the article. Does this make sense?

It would be dumb to expect that they do not have the high quality digitalised sources of OT. It is clear to every common computer user that when you scan, digitalise and restore the original film stock, you first make 10 copies of it on different disks (just to be safe) and then you apply the CGI/chages to one of the copies. It would be dumb to then just delete the sources... unless Lucas is truly a psycho and specifically ordered them to delete the sources.

This would be one of the fastest ways for Disney to make back their $4 billion purchase of Lucasfilm in my opinion. Maybe when they get the distribution rights in seven years, a Blade Runner-style Blu-Ray set will be released.

If this happens, then let's hope they do it right by restoring an IP rather than trying to work with the negative.

The last thing fans of the OOT need is some kind of botched attempt to restore the film from the negative.

Think about it: How likely is it that the team working on the restoration would know about, e.g., the new optical wipes done for the 97SE by Pacific Titles?

The lowest generation source for the original-original-trilogy is an IP. Period. The. End.

Also, what constitutes "original"?

The "tantive orange items" were part of every release print of Star Wars, including the IB Technicolor prints and the prints with the spliced-in '81 crawl.

I'd consider any release that's missing 'em to be non-original, but I'm a pain in the ass. ^_^
