Is it worth re-capturing?

You could probably re-capture the Technidisc pressing, if you like ;)

I'd like to, but they're so damn hard to find!!!

I'll lend mine . . . when the time comes.

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

That'd be excellent, but I only have a Pioneer CLD-V2800 :-(

If that's cool, I'd love to do the project with you after I finish PS78.

Edit: I'm hoping to get my hands on a Panasonic LX-600.

I might be able to get a Pioneer LD-V4400.

(Summon Yoda...) Of this would you approve?

Well, the LD-V4400 is out, as I read that it's well-known for terrible ghosting problems.

is there a reason you're talking about laserdiscs in a VHS thread?

Nope. I de-railed my own thread :-(

Do you know where I can find a good laserdisc player on-the-cheap?

they're pretty cheap depending on the model.

however the shipping prices are pretty high

due to the weight.

According to this post, it looks like I can get excellent quality laserdisc captures by combining a Pioneer CLD-S104/S304 (which does no digital video processing at all) with the comb filter in my Panasonic DMR-ES10.

I've managed to track down a Technidisc copy of The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi.

If I find a Technidisc copy of A New Hope, I'll buy all three.

OK, I'm done de-railing my own thread. I've created a new one for this particular topic.

Were any of the NTSC VHS releases struck from truly unique masters?

That is, were any mastered from a source not used for a Laserdisc release, for instance?

I don't know much about the different sources used for the home video releases but this guy seems to have a pretty good collection of many of them.

I suppose if someone wanted to, they could email him more info about some of his tapes and discs. For instance, he didn't know that the 2008 boxset was basically the same discs as what was in the 2006 individual dvds.

http://swonvideo.com/

what really interested me was that a UK vhs set from 1994 was labeled "Digitally Remastered" yet did not have the THX logo on them. What was that source?

I also believe there was a special vhs boxset in place of the Definitive Laserdisc that just had a different lightsaber color on the box. It also came with a bonus tape that had the 1993 extras. I think that was the Executor set and that was UK Pal but that is not pictured and I don't know if that's the same as the "Digitally Remastered" set.

I'm from the US so I only know that there were basically 2 identical THX certified laserdisc sets in 1993 and 95.

Take back the trilogy. Execute Order '77

These are the same as the 1995 PAL releases. The 'digitally remastered' tag means they've had the noise reduction applied. The last UK VHS releases that are free from DVNR are the 'Special Widescreen Edition" tapes released around '91.

The Executor set has the same PAL THX transfers as the other 1995 releases, except the picture is slightly brighter, and has slightly nicer colour as a result, but the same DVNR smearing you'll find on all post-93 releases. It also released on 4 hour tapes (approx), as each tape is packed with extras, most (if not all, but I'm not certain) of which are available elsewhere in a higher quality.

The 1994 and 1995 UK VHS were both available in full screen and widescreen and the Executor Box set is widescreen only.

From what I have seen, all three widescreen sets are the same with the only differences being with the Fox Fanfare. For some reason, the 1995 ESB and ROTJ widescreen versions do not have the Fox Fanfare but have a CBS FOX logo and fanfare instead

After all these years of the Fox Fanfare - this is just wrong.....

I don't think so, you have the '91 UK SWE VHS that seems to be transferred to PAL from NTSC... that release is still a bit of an enigma.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

What about the 1995 NTSC THX "Faces" Pan&Scan VHS release?
