Help: Looking for... a 1995 THX laserdisc preservation

The “faces” set.  Not anything special done to it, just the straight rip.  This is the version I had as a kid so, while other’s have a lot of nostalgia attached to the theatrical version, my nostalgia is attached to that version.  I would do it myself, but all I have are the beat up vhs copies and don’t have the equipment for a laserdisc transfer even if I had them.  I’ve looked around but haven’t been able to find anything.  Anyone know of any preservs?

Those have been officially released. The bonus discs on the 2004 DVDs 2006 DVDs contain the 1993 transfers, which were used for both the 1993 definitive laserdiscs, and the 1995 faces set.   They have Letterbox video and Dolby 2.0 audio.  There are fan versions that have attempted to improve the video and audio quality, but if you're looking for 1995 quality, the official DVDs are the closest thing.

I have both the '93 and '95 LDs and the 2006 DVDs Echo3 spoke of look FAR better to me than either LD set. However, the LDs still sound better (fuller, less compressed).

There have been many preservations of the 93/95 LDs, but I don't recall if any of them were able to preserve the original LD sound quality.

I have copies of the 2004 2006 DVDs that were upscaled to anamorphic and synced to the PCM tracks.  I honestly cant remember if I did it myself, or aquired from another OT member.

The 2006 dvd has a lot of issues not present on the faces laserdisc.  Audio as mentioned above being a big component.  Also, I'm pretty sure that Star Wars had the original crawl spliced onto it so it doesn't say A New Hope, which is great, but I already have theatrical preservations.  Also the Lucas interviews that played at the beginning (or was it the end?) of the vhs tapes would be nice too.  Although, I suppose if I really wanted to, the crawl and interviews could be easily edited  into the GOUT if I wanted, it just seems a little counterintuitive to me to recreate something when the actual product isn't particularly difficult to get ahold of.  I was just wondering if anyone knew if somebody had already made a preservation.  If all else fails I'll save up for the equipment and do it myself.  I just didn't want to do that and then find out somebody already did, ya know?  Better safe than sorry.

Just to clarify my error, it was the 2006 releases that had the bonus LD transfers.

everything youre looking for has been preserved, and there are dedicated threads here on the OT.  I dont have the time to look it all up for you.

I do recall "project Blu" being cleaned up HD upscales of the 2006 DVDs, and "TR47" being straight rips of the LDs without cleanup work.

There are  many fan edits and preservations out there, with various differences and sound mixes. You just need to look.

Edit: ok so i do have time . Did you notice the project index thread?

TR47  is what you want

The bonus features and interviews you want are also mentioned in that thread.

Thank you, Echo3.  Don't know how I missed this.

i was always under the impression that the faces set was mastered from the pre-altered 2k restored scans that came out as the special editions 2 years later.

No, the faces set is the same as the definitive edition discs. Nothing to do with the scans for the SE.

And Darth Lucas, the faces set, and all laserdiscs as far as I know have the Ep IV ANH crawl, not the 1976/1977 crawl.

There was a lot of bonus material in the DC '93 LD set (unlike the '95 Faces LDs that just had the Leonard Maltin/G. Lucas interviews as bonuses). The DC bonus stuff has been preserved as well.

That's what I said.  The 2006 DVD was suggested, and I was saying that I think that version just said Star Wars, and that I was looking for the crawl to say A New Hope.  Most people use the theatrical crawl in their preservations.

I was sure the 2006 DVD still said A New Hope?

I'll have to check, it has been a while.

No, the 2006 DVD had the 1977 crawl and flyover, presumably newly transferred. I didn't see any DVNR smearing.

It's hilariously sad that they were willing to do a brand new transfer of just that part, but not the rest of the movie.

Unfortunately, our community has yet to produce an HQ version of the 1981 crawl.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Darth Lucas, I suggest you get the Farsight set from MySpleen. It's the best choice for what you're specifically seeking, IMO.

EDIT: When I posted this, I thought Darth Lucas just needed a version that says "Episode IV A New Hope" in the opening crawl, and the only Laserdisc preservations I had seen at the time were Farsight and TR47's v1. Oops.

Except it's DC-- not face set, therefore not what OP is specifically seeking :)

However, in practice you must take into account the “fuckwit factor”. Just talk to Darth Mallwalker…

Uh... The bluray?

The 2011 bluray doesn't have the 1981 crawl, but the 2004 crawl

Ah, they recreated it then?

Honestly, the nostalgia factor for the faces set hinges on the "original versions one last time" commercial and the George Lucas and Leonard Maltin interview. That to me has always been what excites me the most and lets me know I'm watching Star Wars, the same way the Fox fanfare does for other people. A version with that preserved would be really awesome.
