Help Wanted: Original 1993 DTS Trailer Preservation

When Jurassic Park debuted in 1993 in DTS, there was an attached DTS trailer that is very similar to the one we’re used to from DVD, except that after the text and logo of “The Digital Experience” explodes, the pictures fades out.

I’ve been working on re-creating this for awhile so I can attach it to Jurassic Park.  So far, I’ve converted the audio from the DTS cinema discs of Jurassic Park and made a 5.1 DTSMA file.  I also made sure that it was set to sync with 23.97 video.

The problem I’m having is that I am a total novice with video editing, only have iMovie, and the standard DVD dts trailer mpeg2 as a source.  If we can upscale the source, get the frame rate to match the audio, and add the fade, we’ll be in business.

If anyone is willing to lend a hand let me know!

I found your recreation clip on youtube...

I've been working on re-creating this for awhile so I can attach it to Jurassic Park.  So far, I've converted the audio from the DTS cinema discs of Jurassic Park and made a 5.1 DTSMA file.  I also made sure that it was set to sync with 23.97 video.

during my working on JP1 & JP2 extras, I have converted the laserdisc DTS "the digital experience" trailer to 1080p; as the original trailer was in 4:3 format, I left it as is, adding black bars on the sides, but this could be changed.

Here you are the link to the clip: SENDSPACE (40MB, 1080p, 23.976fps, DTS)

Quality is better than the DVD .vob files I've seen around; it's the long version, not the short one you posted on youtube.

The problem I'm having is that I am a total novice with video editing, only have iMovie, and the standard DVD dts trailer mpeg2 as a source.  If we can upscale the source, get the frame rate to match the audio, and add the fade, we'll be in business.

I could also do a 16:9 version, cropping the 4:3 one, and fade-out the video to follow the audio of your project, but I need your DTS-MA audio file... if you are interested, send me a P.M.

Totally forgot I put that attempt on YouTube.

When I get home, I'll upload the audio.  I had to re-do that too because I had an error with the .1 channel on the first go round.

Have you downloaded my clip? What do you think about the quality?

I'm waiting for your audio file.

Hopefully when I get home from work tonight I can respond to both of you!

Thanks for the help!

PM's sent.  But it looks like not much work needs to be done to get this to work.  Awesome sauce!

Finished! Still not perfect, but I like it...

SENDSPACE (22MB, 1080p, DTS-MA)

Enjoy!

Here's my version. It's based on a straight upscale of the 16x9, NTSC DVD version - for what it's worth it was soft telecined so the 23.976 progressive frames could be cleanly extracted.

Hope it's of some use - it's nice to have options, anyway!

Awesome work guys!  This will play nicely in front of Jurassic Park now and forever!

@Jonno;

despite the fact that the DVD .vob you used has a better resolution, and you did a very good job in upscaling it, I don't like it because its "shaking", while the laserdisc version is rock solid; plus, it is "cropped" to 16:9, while the laserdisc is in "glorious" 4:3! (^^,) (^^,) (^^,)

Well, borisanddoris could choose the one who likes most, or add both to Jurassic Park!

Oh, that's a totally fair comment. It's an interesting relic in that the best preservations of a (presumably) digital animation are all derived from analogue film elements, and badly telecined ones in some cases - there's no perfect solution. I'm sure there are uses for all of these versions.

Speaking of cropping, Borisanddoris has mentioned the existence of a 2.35:1 'scope version on some laserdiscs. I'd love to see that added to the collection. edit: I just popped in my surviving Superbit DVD - the R3 release of Gattaca - and the scope version's there. Hard telecined unfortunately. I'll do an upscale when time permits.

Do Dolby trailers warrant an exploration or should we do a separate thread for those?

As I have almost a hundred DTS laserdisc (and severl hundred AC3 laserdisc, to whom it may concern), I'd like to know which one contains the 2.35:1 DTS trailer...

I think a more appropriate "DTS, AC3 and THX trailer preservation" thread should be started - I pass that "duty" to you! (^^,)

It'd be nice to get a full set of Dolby and DTS snipes, in flat and scope, upscaled and with the best sound possible available.  I've got most of them in DVD resolution but nothing better.  I say flat and scope so that folks with common height setups (like me) can play the most appropriate format for a given feature.

What software are you both using to produce these?

Clarification: I never saw a scope DTS trailer on LaserDisc, only DVD.  Same goes for the Dolby trailers.

It'd be nice to at least get the AC3 audio preserved from the THX LaserDisc trailer because on most titles, it sounds REALLY good.  Mission: Impossible Comes to mind.

Maybe we should start making a definitive list of all the variants of each trailer.  For instance, Dolby City.  We should find a flat and scope version (may have to make a scope version with some masking).  Also, some LD versions of City had the Dolby Surround AC3 Digital instead of just Dolby Digital or even Dolby Stereo Digital (like on the Dolby Train Trailers).  Not sure if any of them had wildly different audio.  Train has some variants in audio.  Temple and Canyon are the only other ones on LD I remember...both sounded amazingly good.

That was my bad, you did indeed say the scope version could be found on DVDs. Sorry for being misleading.

I'm certainly up for creating a definitive list! I can start that list with some quite vintage Dolby Stereo and SR trailers (which I suspect I've already passed your way B&D) - give me until the weekend to get things started.

Let's not forget that amazing SDDS preservation that guy did... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1gN7yPyjDT4

If only we had 6 or 8 channel sound for that puppy.  NICE!

FYI, the 16x9 version of the Digital Experience trailer that was used on DVD is slightly altered - the telecine zooms back as the DTS logo appears, because when the revised trailer was made, the new ending was framed too low relative to the Digital Experience part (and I swear I remember seeing theatrical presentations that chopped off part of the word "SOUND" because the projectionist centered the frame relative to the first half).

Here's my upscale of the scope version.

Borisanddoris, I'm intrigued by your mention of a fixed height viewing setup. Does this mean that letterboxing for scope is less desirable? I'd tend towards letterboxed (or, in some cases, windowboxed) 1080p as a standard since BD is the natural medium, but I'd be interested to hear if anyone works differently (particularly since I've just invested in a projector myself).

Scope has always been the "bigger" format. Since most of the films I show are scope, a 2.39 setup is ideal. For flat, I shrink it down and window box it. I don't have side masking, yet. But scope images are full wall to wall in my setup. The effect is dramatic.
