Well, it's now official. The Doctor will regenerate in this years Christmas Special.

I don't know why I bother watching the show anymore.

Why can't they keep the story developments secret?

A week ago they said he had signed to do another series so why couldn't they have run with that lie and surprised me?

It was going to be kept secret until the Christmas special, hence the false report that Matt had signed for the 8th series. But BBC worldwide sent out an email to its clients , which leaked, stating that season 8 will return with a new doctor for a 12 episode run in august 2014. So we're not even getting a split season next year so only 2 episodes in over a year? They're really trying to kill this show off. People are losing interest, not only because of the crap stories of late, but the fact of the split season/ log gaps.

I've never been around Who-dom when a Doctor is leaving / coming. I'm excited to see how angry we can be by every decision.

Am I reading this wrong?

If it's coming back in August 2014 for 12 episodes that means we get 12 episodes not 2.

We have 2 between then (the Anniversary and Christmas specials) but we had slightly more than half a season before that already.

If I had my way we would have a full series leading up to Christmas. Autumn is the right time to start showing Doctor Who, as the nights get darker and colder.

I think that's what I said.

we get 2 episodes this year and a series of 12 episodes starting in August 2014.

I can live with that.

I have a lingering question for which the internet isn't much help. There have been times in Doctor Who that a character will refer to Cardiff in what strikes me as a disparaging tone. What is the joke?

The blue elephant in the room.

It's the capital of Wales (where RTD was born) the host country of the BBC Production team.

It's just a little self swipe at how outsiders (particular Londoners) see Cardiff and Wales in general.

It's also a nod to the fact that due to the budget most of the time you see London/Space Hospital/1920's New York in the show you are usually seeing Cardiff (they even riffed the joke in The Unquiet Dead by having the Doctor moan about accidentally landing in Cardiff when the episode was actually filmed in Swansea).

I'm a fan from back in the days of Tom Baker and Peter Davidson. I've also seen the FOX T.V. movie back in the mid 90's, but not much of the new show. I did see a few of the newer episodes with the guy from "Life on Mars" as a guest star, but not much else. Would you guys have a list of the essential episodes to watch between 2005 and 2013?  I would like episodes that have continuity links, and the best story lines.  I just would very much like to avoid the dull and worst episodes.  Thanks for any help in advance.

Not to be missed  in bold,

The Unquiet Dead,

Dalek,

Father's Day,

The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances,

Badwolf/Parting Of The Ways,

Tooth And Claw,

School Reunion,

The Girl In The Fireplace,

Age Of Steel/Rise Of The Cybermen,

The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit,

Army Of Ghosts/Doomsday,

Gridlock,

Human Nature/The Family Of Blood,

Blink,

Utopia (you may want to see those John Simm episodes again but they are a bit rubbish).

The Fires Of Pompeii,

Planet Of The Ood,

Silence In Library/Forest Of The Dead

Midnight,

Turn Left,

The next two have a good guest star but the rest of it is awful beyond words.

The Waters Of Mars,

The End Of Time pt 1 and 2

Most of Matt's next two series were good so ones to AVOID (not because they are awful but just not as good)

Victory Of The Daleks,

The Vampires Of Venice,

The Curse Of The Black Spot

Closing Time.

The next series was patchy so back to listing ones to SEE.

Asylum Of The Daleks,

A Town Called Mercy,

The Snowmen,

The Bells Of St John,

Hide,

The Name Of The Doctor.

I'd definitely watch End of Time, given it's a decent story, and important continuity wise, and Name of the Doctor, since it's fairly important continuity wise, and seems to be setting us up for the 50th anniversary special.

Like most RTD penned finales it's overblown and hinges on lapses of internal plot logic that will scramble your mind but it I did include it because of the continuity importance.

So my friend and I started to watch the 2005 Series 1.

Because he requested, we started with "Rose" and continued with "The End of the World "We did enjoy these episodes quite a bit.  The " The Unquiet Dead " was the best of the 3 we viewed the first evening. The next two stories we did not like so much, so we will be sticking to your list from now on Bingowings.

I'm a fan of the older series, especially Tom Baker.  But "Blink" blew me away.  I highly recommend it.

I'm not a huge fan of Blink. Sure, it's a good story with a good concept (which Moffat ruins every other time he uses those characters), but I didn't see it as a Who story. Just a good Twilight Zone or something.

I disagree it's exactly the sort of story Who should have done in the eighties when the money started running out instead of the stupid pantomime.

It would have made a good Sapphire & Steel story too but I can imagine the two universes co-existing.

The second story was still good but not as conceptually perfect (Aliens to Blink's Alien) the last one was a let down though.

Welcome to what I shouted at the screen when he came on.

"RICKY!"

I play the free iOS Star Trek card game "Rivals", and he's one of the cards. I only refer to it as "the Ricky Card".

I re-watched The Robots Of Death and The Horror Of Fang Rock again recently and they have held up very well.

Both are well worth a visit while you are waiting on the anniversary.
