These boxes were not in the original release VHS's, they're not in the SE's, and they're not in the original release DVD's from 2004. If they were in the original version, I could understand that, all the limits of technology could not erase them.
Those "boxes" are an artifact of the original effects, they've been there from day one. They're called "garbage mattes". I'm surprised you're seeing them in the Bluray, seeing as the blacks levels are f***ed up, you shouldn't be able to see them. Whereas you could've seen them in one of the VHS releases, as those releases were brightened to compensate for old crt sets.
Diagnosis: your tv is not properly calibrated.
My Tv is calibrated correctly and the garbage mattes, especially in ROTJ are visible.
