Hey Harmy,

Great job with your sources featurette! I really loved seeing how you combined the disparate pieces to make a whole greater than the sum of its parts. The only thing I'd suggest is that you remember to credit one more very important person: you. You mention how one part of the frame was rotoscoped in via a custom mask, etc. but you never tell the audience that you created the mask, or that you worked frame-by-frame to reincorporate it.  We all know you did, but you deserve to take a little bow, methinks! =)

Just my two cents. Keep up the great work, as always! =)

I agree. While doing the translation, I was about to translate some sentences using "we". But I thought "HE did that, by himself. We almost did nothing compared to him". The thing is the featurette doesn't point that out precisely.

Please bear with me if I tend to get too excited about anything or say too much, I have issues.

I've been lurking on this thread for months now but I just wanted to step out of the shadows to congratulate Harmy for his incredible work! I've seen snippets of the project here and there but the progress and quality shown in the documentary is nothing short of phenomenal. Thank you for making me excited about Star Wars again!

If you like I could translate subtitles into German. In this case it would help to get an already finished .srt version (prefer english) for the timings if there is one available.

Maybe I could also create a german Dub if this is interesting for you.

Great work. I flipped out as I discovered these versions!! Unbelievable how much time and devotion you invested!!!

I think somewhere in the near future this will be seen as an important milestone from a film historic viewpoint.

Is there a need for a Spanish translation? I might be able to help with that, if so.

Quick question

What is everyone's preferred audio track when watching the Despecialized?

70mm 5.1 mix FTW.  Historically accurate, high quality, AND makes good use of a modern home theatre.  The mono mix is interesting to me too, but I just can't get into it for whatever reason--quality issues, too used to the stereo variants from home video, whatever it is.  '77 stereo is too close to 70mm to be that interesting to me, and '85 and '93 stereo just seem wrong to use without the '81 crawl and flyover.  YMMV.

For me- Mono  all the way.

looking for HDTV of the  Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith.  Also HDTV of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

French audio track most of the time, because it's the version I discovered as a child 20 years ago, but sometimes I watch it in 5.1 because it has the best sound to me, and because I hate Vader's French voice in this movie. I wouldn't have minded a new voice for him as a change, ideally hiring Georges Aminel (Vader's voice in French versions of ESB and ROTJ) again, but he's dead now.

For those interested in translating subtitles for Harmy's Video Sources Documentary, I'm currently working on timed English subtitles in .srt format. I'll share the finished file here when I'm done; hope to be finished by later tonight or tomorrow.

EDIT: Rough draft is done, but I want some time to do some quality checks and see how it looks when combined with the video on YouTube. Expect a finished .srt file of English subtitles tomorrow afternoon (i.e., in about 16 hours as of this edit).

The first time I watched the Despecialized edition and I got the EXACT feeling I did when I was a kid watching the movie....it was honestly nothing short of magic for me. Your work is so unbelievably special to me you have no idea.

I never realized the sheer amount of work that you've put into it, but I for one, thank you from the bottom of my heart for every frame of it!!!!

If anyone needs tools for making subtitles "Aegisub" is a cross-platform solution.

I'm a fansubber, I use this program all the time.  I think a friend of mine uses it on a Mac and we've both run it on Linux, though I currently use Windows.

Hi guys,

first post ever ! just discovered this project recently as it was mentioned in another site by a regular member of this family (thanks Pittrek!).

Just logged in to say I´m blown away by Harmy´s work. You´re a hero! I enjoyed at last watching these movies again the same way I used to do when I was a kid, before the dark times ... :)

I´m really enjoying reading all your posts everyday, guys, feeling your love and care for SW ... it´s amazing !

The most recent surprise was the making-of documentary. I wish it had lasted 1 hour, to say the least, Harmy !

btw, thanks for those working on any subtitle form ! despite my "correct" english level, it´s always helpful having english or spanish subs (spanish being my native language)

greetings from Barcelona !

OK. I was hoping to have a release ready by now but since real life interfered, I can't release the BD on today's anniversary of the original premiere.

I did however decide, as a little premiere anniversary present to you guys, to release a little documentary that I was going to keep for the BD, which maps out all the sources used in Despecialized Edition v2.5 and give you a little peak behind the rontoscoping :-)

AMAZING work Harmy!  I really appreciated your documenting even just a small portion of the monumental behind-the-scenes collaborative effort that has gone into producing as definitive a product as we may ever see…THANK YOU SO MUCH! ;)

Here are a couple/few mirrors to help speed things up (all 3 links will deliver an identical .mkv file to the one originally shared by Harmy above):

English subtitles for the Video Sources Documentary are now complete! Get the .srt file with the direct link below:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/108143349/Sources-Doc_eng.srt

For those of you working to translate the English transcript to other languages, I hope the above file with caption timings will help speed up the process.

If we get many translated .srt files, it may be nice to remux them with the .mkv. In the mean time, I would love to add any available translations to the video on YouTube. I've already added the English subtitles; view at the link below:

Thanks to everyone working on translations! I look forward to seeing your finished results!

My dad took me to see it in the theater in '77 when I was just 2 years old. I don't remember it at all, but my Mom said I loved it. Oddly though, I do remember being taken to see both Herbie goes to Monte Carlo and James Bond The Spy Who Loved me at a drive-in double bill, but I suppose that could have been in 1978 if they were still playing.

I have this fantasy that I have a job at Spike TV (shitty American tv network that airs Star Wars movies from time to time) and I'll have the job where I am in charge of loading discs into the computers and on the day that I am loading in the star wars disc into the computer I "get confused" and "accidentally" load in the despecialized disc

I picture this as a Shawshank Redemption moment when Andy is playing Duettino from The Marriage of Figaro. Inside the control room, turning up the volume while George is trying to get inside with a prop lightsaber in his hand knocking on the glass.

Just finished a german translation for the subtitles of the featurette. Give me one or two more days to do some corrections.

For sure I am not a professional translator so many translated Items might be discussed by other german speaking members, espacially because I left some of the technical terms like "rotoscoping" or "matte" paintings in its original english form cause I think german film editors use these terms as well.

If there is some interest I can also try to do a german dub of the featurette!?!

Looking forward to v2.5!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds awesome, George! Looking forward to seeing your translated subtitles. If you share the result of your translation as a timed .srt file, I'll add it to the video featurette on YouTube and store it for a possible remux of the .mkv.

I think dubbing the featurette would be cool, too, though we'll see what others say.
