Instead Lucas made him annoying, ungrateful, hypocritical and whiny. The PT was supposed to be a story about good man turning bad. In reality the PT was a story of how a complete jerk (PT Anakin) turned into one of the most likeable and badass characters in film history (OT Vader).

The fall to the dark side wasn't a tragedy. It was a big change for the better.
