Yup, check your PMs.

Thanks for that.  I love how the probot's head moves independently from the body, as well as the continuity error with the SD to the right of Vader's helmet being fixed by making an appearance in the Executor body shot (in the upper left).

LOVING the final color of the TIE fighters.  More grey than blue, so it's a nice compromise between the flat grey in ANH and the straight blue ones in EMPIRE.

Texturing is now complete on the hangar miniature. Next to paint it and add all the extra mechanical and pipe details

The prequels are horrible about the holograms looking around and looking at who they are talking to. It makes zero sense. In ESB the various captains are the same size as Vader onboard the Executor. It makes sense that they are perhaps looking at life-sized holograms of Vader just as he is looking at them life-sized. Pre-recorded ones like Luke's and Leia's have them looking forward but not interacting. If memory serves, in the meditation chamber, the 'front-view' of the Emperor seems to be looking forward whereas the side view seems to have him looking down at Vader. With the Veers/Vader scene, I just think it makes sense that the shot be changed entirely or at the very least have Vader looking forward instead of looking up.

Although in the real world Vader should be looking forward. But this is a movie and in cinematic terms, because Veers is looking down at the Hologram, Vader needs to be looking up or it would just look wrong. You can't change the shot to him looking forward because it will look completely wrong if Vader isn't looking directly at Veers. You also can't change the hologram for Vader to be looking forwards because, again, Veers is looking down. But who is to say that Vader isn't looking up at a monitor? He doesn't have to be looking at a hologram of Veers. We don't see the other end of the transmission.

What did you use to create the grooves?

A fork? Stanley? or something else?

Also I am curious will you be populating this miniature with models or digital matte?

Basically we know that you plan to replace the out of scale background but what will it be comprised of?

I saw those y-wing finemolds pics and really increased my interest if you will be adding physical models to the shot...

A little idea but if you add any lights...Put a cardboard box board lid a burn some joss sticks might create good atmosphere to the miniature or even cigerette smoke basically smoke and lights.

If any mini lights need diffusing to stop glare get some frost lighting gel or tracing paper / grease proof paper might even do the trick for LED's for instance...

I used one of these:

Prefect tool to use so that all the grooves aren't uniform. I covered the foam board with plaster powder mixed with 100% PVA glue and used this tool then to create the texture. The PVA not only helps the plaster bond better but also gives it the perfect mixture to be able to drag the tool across the surface, creating smooth texture.

I will be using the fine molds 1/72 models to populate it as it is built to 1/72 scale. I will have to digitally insert the transports using available shots of the original models (would love to have used the resin kit of the Transports available on ebay, but i just couldn't afford the £400+ price tag). All the boxes, pipes etc will be  built physically at 1/72 and placed in the set, including all the lights etc. Then the troops and pilots that the 2nd unit filmed will be inserted . I have a smoke machine that will be used to add a fine layer of smoke in the hangar, then digitally insert the jets of steam seen in the full scale version (falcon hangar)

Though I disagree with the decision I respect your perspective. I guess once you're done I'll do my own revisited special edition again to suit my own wants after you and your crew have done all the heavy lifting. I loathe roto work and I'd love to know your techniques to help make my own work go smoother. Any chance of doing a small "how to" video ala Andrew Kramer? I think that learned ability would help all of us fellow editors.

Also, great work on the hangar bay. Glad to to see it taking shape.

I got one of those measure shape depth tools lol...

Definitely diffuse whatever you light it with though... I don't know what light you are planning to use for the overall set light... I would suggest halogen though and diffuse it with one of these.

http://www.leefilters.com/lighting/diffusion-list.html

one last thing light it from both the left and the right atleast 2 lights.. even better if you can get halogen lamps with dimmer control.

I can't wait to see the final shot now

Thanks for posting that clip. Fantastic as always. Forgive me if this has already been covered, but is that the cut of the Imperial March that you'll be using in the final version? I've always loved that particular segment of music and wished it was back in the movie where it belongs. I think it seems much more appropriate than the version they ended up using.

I second that notion.  More pronounced and less concert version.

I wish I knew of this forum back when ANH:R was being done - since Ady used the Imperial March in there for the DS reveal - the music that works especially well for Vader's entrance not he Tantive IV is the cue of music in the ESB when Vader walks into the Bespin torture chamber to watch Han get toasted.  Works perfect in that context.

Hope the cue used here for the Imp Fleet reveal uses the original cue as intended by Williams.  Much better IMHO.

@trekkie 313 I totally agree...

I'm not saying CGI is crap either but it is over used as the one stop solution to any major production and it's wearing thin.

I have recently been going through many old horror movies and anthologies just to admire the make up and creature effects that I so badly miss as well as miniature work and stop motion. It looks amazing compared to films today.

It is like everyone says CGI is the most expensive process and that it's actually cheaper to do it with miniatures or make-up and animatronics... But I call BS the CGI is a cheaper less time consuming process and can be edited and changed on the fly without constant physical re-design or re-shoots. And the top tier talent base is possibly quite niche now

I don't buy CGI is more expensive but if it is get more of the Old Talent and their apprentices back into movies doing it the way it used to be done but enhanced with CGI I think this is the winning strategy and start writing off so much unrealistic CGI that looks really horrible... Use the Hobbit as a prime example that also has gone the way of the PT star wars trilogy.

Using the right tool for the right job is what it boils down to and working that into a budget not just ok let's call the CGI guys in they will fix it. Making decisions on what will work better and not what is cheaper or easier.

Talking of re-scoring a special edition scene.... Perhaps this part with the cloud car fly through up until leia is at the window in cloud city... I wonder if it could be improved... Although I am stuck for suggestions on a replacement.

Composting real models into a film digitally gives much more amazing results than the composting of 30 years ago. I like how Ady is giving us a good mix of CGI, models, and what was there already. You still feel like you're watching Star Wars, it's just more refreshing.

I never knocked the Special Editions for making changes, it's the fact that they slapped in crap, and ignore some of the more important things that needed fixing. Ady is doing these things, and he isn't sticking in shit, just because he can.The films are maintaining their integrity.

"The other versions will disappear. Even the 35 million tapes of Star Wars out there won’t last more than 30 or 40 years. A hundred years from now, the only version of the movie that anyone will remember will be the DVD version [of the Special Edition], and you’ll be able to project it on a 20’ by 40’ screen with perfect quality. I think it’s the director’s prerogative, not the studio’s to go back and reinvent a movie." - George Lucas

Practical FX all the way for me with CGI for seemless compositing and the big crowd/epic stuff.

I love the often simple yet seemingly magician like techniques used for practical FX. A great demonstration of this is checking out the Commentary on the BR of Francis Ford Coppola's 'Dracula'.  He reveals that he had to fire the original FX team as they were insisted that he needed to use CGI to accomplish the shots Coppola wanted.  So Coppola just put his son in charge and they used strictly near-silent-era in-camera trickery to do all the FX.  They didn't even resort to optical compositing never mind digital compositing!

I remember seeing the film in 1992 and thinking they were some of the best FX I'd ever seen so I couldn't believe how simply they were achieved when I heard the commentary.  I think today if a Director wanted a rat running upside down on the ceiling they'd just reach staright for the CGI. But in Dracula they filmed Dracula with the top half of the negative matted, then just flipped it over, rewound the film, matted the bottom and then filmed the rat, genius.

'Jurassic Park' was in production at around the same time, which would usher in the era of big dazzling CGI action blockbusters. Of course JP still holds up today thanks to Star Wars' own Phil Tippett probably because he'd had a whole career of doing practical FX, so knew if a CGI shot wasn't looking as good.

'Dracula' cost $20million less than JP to produce but JP took four times what 'Dracula' took at the box office. I'm sure studio executives took note of that.

Would be kinda fun to do a "Special Edition" ROTS fanedit just for Lucas and mail it to him.

You could add in Ewoks line dancing across the screen when Anakin is pledging himself to Palpatine,

or,

add in General Grievous firing first at Obi-Wan.

or,

add Jar-Jar into the back of Padme's death scene going "Youssa gonna die?"

Maybe then he'd get why we all have a problem with this kind of vandalism of the OT.

Sadly, George would probably say, "Why didn't I think of that?" Then he'll spend the next 3 years creating the PT Special Edition - his original vision now updated to his original vision.

I hate to say this but do we actually need a tiny hologram of Vader in the AT-AT cockpit?

Wouldn't it make more sense to have a small monitor showing a conventional 2d image of Vader?

Vader has the same set up in his chamber and it would remove the eye line problem.

For conference calls and personal messages holographs seem to make sense but this is the cramped interior of a moving military vehicle.

Toning the tech back would make more sense.

I agree with Bingowings. It wouldn't hurt my feelings to see a 2D monitor for communication inside the AT-AT. It's kind of like the lightsaber - it's a cool device, but gets old if seen too often (ahem - PT!). Not every communication in SW has to be via hologram. Besides, if it helps the continuity (where is each character looking during hologram conversations), isn't that what most of the Revisited project is about anyway?

From a continuity standpoint, there are very few non-hologram video communications in the saga (the main one that jumps to mind is Amidala talking to the Trade Federation in TPM). In the OT, remote communication is mainly comlink or hologram.
