I've concretely decided that I'm not ever going to watch any of the movies in Abrams' Trek series. I'm liking the original series too much to subject myself to what is obviously dumbed-down, unfaithful, all-flash-but-no-substance schlock.

I've concretely decided that I'm not ever going to eat any of the hamburgers at Red Robin.  I'm liking steak too much to subject myself to what is obviously inferior, poorly cooked, all-toppings-but-no-love dreck.

It's not like the rest of Trek is going to be ruined by watching the new stuff.

No, but it'll save me from wasting my time.

Good for you. I'm happy to see you sticking to your guns.

No fun complaining about something you've never watched. ;)

I like Red Robin's fries though.

Where were you in '77?

On the Directors Edition commentary for TWOK, Nick Meyer comments about how the TV versions are basically the directors cut seen on the DVD.

Is this true or was he mistaken? I've watched TWOK many times on the 2002 DVD and have only seen chunks of it on TV.

I'd love to get a HD version of it.

I finally finished all of TNG last night, including all four movies.

Now I'm depressed. :-(

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

Start watching Farscape or Babylon 5 or Blakes 7.

How does Farscape hold up today? I randomly caught an episode or two of it back in the 90's and always thought it looked interesting. Wondering if it is worth checking out today if you don't have any nostalgia for it?

I'm slowly finishing my third go at all things Buffy/Angel but when I'm done I'm giving 'Fire Escape' another squeeze.

The most eye popping, brain fizzing stories that took chances that I don't anyone has taken before or since outside of maybe Rudy Rucker's books.

This is from the fool who didn't watch the first two series until later because he thought it was stupid kids show with farting muppets.

Damn trailers!

The aspect ratio may diminish some of the impact of the then jaw-dropping look of the show but there is much more to it than looks.

It's a shame how it ended but at least there was some closure thanks to the fans not letting it die.

Characters too, real people who you can care about even if they are blue vegetable women or small farting deposed monarchs.

Farscape, The plot holds up surprisingly well just not the CGI man it looks dated.

Firefly came later and that looks great in HD except for the low budget effects.  Wow they look horrible.

The movie  Serenity i know its stupid like Zombies in space but i thought it was surprisingly good characterization and directing.  Became one of my favorite films.

As for star trek when is Deep Space Nine being remastered ?

I haven't seen a single episode since the early 90s and only two of the movies, so I'm in the dark here. Why are they depressing?

Whoa! You watch like 9 movies a week, and you've never bothered to check out all the Star Trek movies?

I should clarify - I've seen only two ST films focusing on the TNG characters (Generations and First Contact). Outside of those two, I've seen the first six films with the original series' characters.

If you have an iOS device, you should check out Star Trek Rivals. Cute little card game. My friend code is ILJTFK.

Yeah, you made it pretty clear you were talking about the TNG movies the first time.

Why haven't you seen Generations or First Contact. They're both fun movies, hell of a lot better than that film in theaters right now. Having Kirk make an appearance in Generations was a little silly, but overall I really liked the Nexsus concept, even though the writers failed to strictly define the rules of how it works and kept making it do things you felt it shouldn't be able to do. And I can't complain about freakin' Malcolm McDowell as an ST villain.

And First Contact will always be one of my favorite Star Trek films. I hated the introduction of the Borg Queen and wish that had never become a thing, but overall I really like this movie.

I thought Insurrection was entertaining, but it didn't do a whole lot. And Nemesis felt like pretty much the bottom of the barrel, until J. J. Abrams came along and showed that the barrel, was indeed, much deeper than we thought.

DE has seen Generations and First Contact. Which is good enough, honestly.

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

Ah, gotcha. Not sure how I misread that.

But seriously, Insurrection and Nemesis are both far better than the J. J. stuff. Insurrection actually has a story, which is something I noticed movies don't necessarily have to have anymore. Nemesis had somethings I liked about it, more I didn't, you're not missing anything.

I like Nemesis more than I used to. Past the not so compelling villain, ("I had a horrible childhood! Therefore, Earth must DIE!") there are some nice character moments. The Romulans get to be good guys, and the door opens a crack to better relations with the Federation. Worf, who once refused to offer medical aid to a Romulan on TNG, gained a new respect for them.

Lore would have made more sense than B9 though. As would a Spock cameo, since he was probably still hanging out on Romulus.

I'm surprised STID didn't swipe the starship ramming scene. ;)

So does anyone know if the current television version of TWOK is the same as the directors cut DVD?

As a person who watched part of Insurrection, I remain unconvinced.

Which part did you watch and how much?

It was a lower stakes, smaller scale story, which I appreciate. It had some neat prime directive dilemmas, and some good character moments. In some ways it felt more like a long high budget episode of TNG. If you enjoy TNG, then there is no reason not to watch it. It had a nifty space battle too that was more tactical and not all about explosions.

All in all, I feel it captured what TNG was all about far better than any of the other TNG movies. Or perhaps more accurately, it was the only TNG movie to come close to capturing what the TV show was all about.

My sorted list of favorite->"meh" for the ST:TNG movies:

1. First Contact

2. Insurrection

3. Generations

4. Nemesis
