Went to see it with my dad today.

Hmmm, I feel like the last three Trek movies, Nemesis, J.J. Trek, and now Into Darkness have all been, at least to some degree, rehashes of The Wrath of Khan. I love The Wrath of Khan, not only is it a great Star Trek movie, but it is just a great sci-fi movie. But come on, how many times do we need to see the same loose story retold?

One of the great things about sci-fi is the ability to explore strange new places, ideas, and concepts through fiction. In sci-fi you have a storytelling environment where you can literally go anywhere and do anything. I can still remember various great and fun imagination inspiring sci-fi concepts introduced to me through each of the Star Trek TV shows, from TOS to Voyager.

Into Darkness doesn't give us anything new that we haven't seen before. It doesn't even come close to giving us the emotional responses that The Wrath of Khan did. What it does give us is a formulaic story, poorly written dialogue, and next to no character development at all.

And I swear, for Bones' dialogue, they must have just come up with a computer algorithm that they feed the interacting character's lines into, and in turn it generates an appropriate response using direct DeForest Kelly quotes from the old series. The character is not even a character in this movie, just a bunch of witty quips, with a couple of lines of dialogue relevant to the overall plot.
