DL'ing now, but seeders are MIA at the moment.

Will give feedback once I've seen it, but from the samples and the screencaps I'd say this is a top-notch LD preservation.

About edge halos: they are present on ALL the laserdisc captures of JP I've done, both copies of PAL IT, in PAL UK and in NTSC DTS... I thought about a Pioneer laserdisc player fault, so I capture some footage using a Philips player... they are still there!

I picked up the SW captures (I have done A LOT of them), and magnifing 8x random frames, it seems there are not edge halos...

Again, in JP those halos could be seen only on the right side of dark objects over bright background (like trees over the sky), and are quite visible in only few scenes (obviously, if seen frame-by-frame, and magnified, they are more visible...)

At the end, the causes could be:

  1. my capture card is guilty (comb filter problems? but for JP captures done using the Philips laserdisc player I used composite, while with the Pioneer I used S-Video...)
  2. laserdisc format is prone to edge halos (but there are none on SW captures, either done with laserdisc and VHS)
  3. Jurassic Park master used for the laserdiscs has problems

To be sure #3 is wrong, someone else should capture some scene - the best should be the first encounter of Alan and Ellie with the brachiosaurus; the edge halos could be seen easily on the trees on the right... if there are NOT edge halos, it should NOT be the master or the laserdisc format itself, but only my capture card... but why with JP and not SW?

I'll check JP and upload that scene if you like.

BTW, have you considered the MUSE release of JP?

Thanks for your help; it will be interesting to do comparisons, and discover where the problem is!

I considered the MUSE JP, but:

  • also if I have a MUSE laserdisc player, I have not a MUSE decoder
  • I have a simple low definition PAL/NTSC capture card, so I can't capture the MUSE high definition video
  • I'm aware that is possible to see MUSE video as low definition NTSC (and capture it, too) but I don't think it will be a lot better than a standard PAL/NTSC laserdisc

If someone with a MUSE laserdisc player, a MUSE decoder, a MUSE  Jurassic Park laserdisc and an high definition capture card would like to do this, he/she's welcome! (^^o)

Actually yes! BTW what was the resolution of a MUSE HD Laserdisc? Was it 1920*1080 p? If its from the same master then it will look a lot better in HD MUSE LD, maybe?

Be interesting seeing a preservation of Muse LDs. Anyone on the forum have a player? The Jurassic Park one would probably look like this except with a higher level of detail. It be interesting seeing HD transfers circa the late 90s, with substantially different color timing and contrast sensibilities. Terminator 2, Back to the Future, etc.

I have the Pioneer HLD-X9 and Panasonic LX-HD20 MUSE laserdisc players... If only someone would borrow me a MUSE decoder along with some MUSE discs, I would invest some money for a HD capture card!

Until today Jurassic Park [ruLes] - BD was snatched ten times... please seed it as long as you can, and don't forget to post your feedbacks here!

Andrea.

Just finished downloading this today (took over a week as there was only one seeder).

I have taken a look at different scenes and had a listen to the DTS track and I must say I am mightily impressed. This is very watchable, and a worthy preservation of what Laserdisc has to offer.

I look forward to your other Laserdisc projects.

Hope now someone else will seed it for some time, so the download time will be lowered (I hope).

Thank you very much, is rewarding to know someone else (apart me) likes one of my projects!

I look forward to your other Laserdisc projects.

What about JP2 and JP1 "making of" + JP2 "behind the scenes"? I just discovered that JP2 PAL has the same "making of" of the NTSC LD... but has subtitles and not an italian soundtrack... oh well, I'll copy them by hand, and use them for the soft subs of the project!

...and what about Star Trek EP1 to EP8?

There are a few MUSE captures floating around the interwebs, but no movies. Just the HD video productions (look for Ferrari of the Art), which have always been said to be higher quality than the film transfers (because telecines sucked then).

I was going through the restoration (Jurassic Park [rules 1.0] BD).

And Its a pretty NEAT effort! Wonderful, Great!

I had never expected the Video to be this stunning looking, with so much detail. Of course proper HD releases will have better detail and clarity. But this rivals and edges past the DVD with a slight advantage in my opinion, based on overall look! Plus The LD DTS audio is so good! I have downloaded the Cinema DTS Audio, and the LD one I think sounds a bit better than that! This is really solid effort, and its going to look great in my Sony Trinitron 21 inch TV(It already looks good on my HD TFT monitor). I am currently downscaling it to a DVD9 with two-pass encoding via ConvertXtoDVD (the best video to DVD conversion software yet!). Can't wait to watch it. Hats off, Kudos and whatever other praise-words are out there!

Thanks man for doing this for all of us!

I know The Lost World:Jurassic Park Laserdisc Project is going to be equally great! Bring it on!

P.S: I've also sent you a more detailed PM! Check it.

Another thing, which video source did you use for most of the movie?

From 1st post in the thread .....

Video treatment:

main video parts are from two italian PAL laserdisc copies, one of them captured by two different laserdisc players; these captures are time and space aligned, then with AviSynth median scripts are overlaid to eliminate some noise and drop-outs; the english PAL laserdisc single capture is used when italian subtitles are on pictures, to use english subtitles or no subtitles at all, while the NTSC DTS laserdisc single capture is used where the italian and english PAL laserdiscs fades off at the end of a side, and fade on in the other side (italian) or disc (english); derainbowing, little noise reduction (new scrip used, less aggressive) and sharpen; no color correction, only levels are adjusted minimally to let the three sources match in saturation, brightness and contrast; upconversion from PAL 720x576 4:3 and NTSC 720x480 to 1280x720 16:9 - no frames are lost in the process, at the contrary, there are few frames in some laserdiscs and not in the others, so at the end the final video will show some frames more than the single capture.

Video tracks:

  • the original PAL video format is 720x576@25fps 1.85:1 letterbox, with a video resolution of visible image around 700x412; the original NTSC video format is 720x480@29.97fps 1.85:1 letterbox, with a video resolution of visible image around 700x346; captured using the Lagarith lossless codec; video is upconverted to 1280x692 1.85:1, inside a 1280x720pixel 16:9 frame, using x264 code; frame rate changed from 25fps to 23.976fps with TSmuxeR.

I know that Jetrell Fo! I was asking Thai Panther which major source did he end up using most actually in the project, and which were the instances where he used other sources! But thanks anyways!

Hi.

I snatched it, and it's really impressive, pq wise. I had no chance yet to check the audio part.

I am seeding it on a very fast seedbox (505 mbit up and 4.43 ratio as we speak), and will seed for some time, so grab it now!

And by the way, thank you Andrea, fellow italian, for the wonderful work, that in my opinion will open a completely new and exciting way to transfer old video material to a new life :)

Papai, thanks for your support!

nickdiba, thank you too for the support, and for seeding my project files...

As it seems there is some interest, I think I'll do JP2 next... what do you all think?

Yes, we're ready for JP2 next!

And Andrea, I send you a detailed PM, tell me what do you think and send me a PM back.

I watched it in my Sony Trinitron 21 TV last night, and let me be very honest- The picture quality looked better than the DVD, at least had a slight advantage over it, the sound was much much better though! The edge halos weren't too much of an issue, but they were visible.

What you might want to ask is if anyone has invites to said place, if you don't have one, so that you can download it.
