For what it's worth, someone posted WOWOW part one WITHOUT hard-coded Japanese subtitles to Usenet.  The nfo explains how they removed the subs.   It's 25.73 gb's and hopefully I can trash the canal+ version I just obtained with the annoying logo.

I don't know what Usenet is and how to use it. Could you please post the content of the .nfo file here? I'm curious what they're writing.

I've never heard about this hi-def laserdisc either. I mean I didn't even heart about the technology.

Depends on the dics, they are softer and always 1080i and some have awful masters and blocky encodes but some are amazing.

Shame they are all for the hyper rich only, as a rip of the Jurassic Park and BTTF sets would be amazing

This BD is the best of the 3 movies PQ wise but that isn't saying much :/
so I used the superior wowow cap that had Jap subs burnt in for every spoken
word and used another source to overlay the subs using the patented haroldnipps
method. I prefer this to the BD and so do quite a few other people on the site as
it at least resemebles film and doesn't have major EE, sharpening, and filtering.

It would be nice to see BTTF get the same treatment as the new 4K remaster of Ghostbusters. One can dream right?

Thanks for posting this. It would be interesting to know that why he took all the trouble fixing the WOWOW, instead of fixing the Canal+ which only had a logo in a corner? It's easy to cover the subs in acceptable quality, but quite complicated to do it really well.

I assume the 'haroldnipps method' is kind of a joke, meaning he did it in his own (unknown) way.

The Canal+ capture is considered to have worse compression.

Has anyone compared the Canal+ version with the WOWOW-based one on the newsgroups? If the quality is substantially better, will anyone share with us non-newsgroup users? Don't get me wrong, the rip that DVDMike share is already excellent, but if there's something better...

Will download it tonight and check

The WOWOW is indeed less compressed, being the bigger file it should be,

But this results in little difference in most shots

It seems so, they're not the same frames though.

They are on my PC, look at the white dot that is there for only one frame.

Plus the WOWOW is not OAR

They are absolutely the same frames - they even have the same specks of dirt.

The frames has been replaced. On the original two frames, there were the Doc with the remote control and Marty with the camera (Twin Pine mall scene). Those frames were not exactly the same.

Oh that, I uploaded them by mistake, as your quote included my edit I thought you were talking about the new ones

Looks like the only considerable difference is the lack of a Canal logo. The non-OAR doesn't bother me too much though: 1:85 and 1:78 make no considerable difference to me. Anyone thinking of using it as the basis of a preservation project—with the LD audio (that was kindly ripped by Jonno), perhaps?

I am. But, like I said, I will need technical assistance.

Like video codecs for example...

Oh, and, who has the LD audio?

1920x1040 = 1.85.

Interesting that the edges are clean on the Canal+ and not on the WOWOW. I would say Marty's face holds up better on the Canal+ in the frame you chose.

(BTW, what did you use to make the PNGs? My MSPaint recompression of your Canal+ image is half the size.)

Paint can save as png, but I save them as .png from mpc

Any news? Still searching for BTTF 2 & 3 Canal+ rips.

By the way, i've ripped all the stereo audio tracks from my BTTF NTSC laserdiscs and they are now synced with the DXVA HDTV versions. If you are interested you know what you have to do.

So where are the WOWOW for BTTF 2 and 3? Would love to have the WOWOW for Part 1 left as is with the grain kept in and made as a Blu-ray disc ISO.

Author

So did anyone sync the stereo LD track with the WOWOW or Canal+, as I understand it the RuTracker HDTV (DXVA?) is lower quality and suffers from compression?

Author

Yes, indeed! I've synced the LD track with the Canal+ version. You can PM me ;)
