Hi all, here is an update on The Killer ive been working on.

VIDEO

Ive used the German E.M.S DVD and the U.K Hong Kong Legends DVD for Open and end credits, done an upconvert to 1080p and converted the frame rate from 25fps to 23.976.
This gave me a 1920x1080p AVI @ 23.976fps compressed using the UT 422 codec at a whopping 238GB
I corrected a few errors with the print in Adobe Premiere and added a layer of film grain over the image to try and help blend in some of the artifects caused by the DVD compression, it also helps cover some of the DNR.

SCREENSHOTS

Looks much better in motion and the grain looks very organic, I understand if this seems a little stupid to some but to me it helps.

TRAILER

I through this together when I was remastering the American Trailer for the bonus feature disc, may also use it for the menu.
You Tube compression aside it gives more of a sense of how it looks in motion.

AUDIO

Im working on a custom 5.1 audio mix using the DTS track from the Japanese Blu, it is more in line with the original mono mix and ive removed most of the added sound fx that really annoyed me. Some are still there but they do not bother me.
Other options ive synced are the Criterion Laserdisc Audio, English Dub in 5.1, and 3 Commentary tracks from the Criterion, Fox Lober and HK legends discs.

SUBTITLES

Synced the HK Legends subs to it with a section of the Criterion subs to cover a song that has been changed in the newer mixes, Ive also made some time ajustments and added some additional lines.

At the momment the specs for the final are looking like this.

...while I really like the more accurate/less embellished subtitles in general, I'm just personally tied to the character names on the old subs: Alan/Tony, Foxy, etc--so I'm making a hybrid set of subs from both sources.

You'd think that would have been easy, but since there are spelling differences on some names, I ended up referring to the official English Hard Boiled movie credits as the authoritative source to resolve conflicts.  So, it's Mr. Hoi instead of Mr. Hui, and Teresa instead of Theresa.  But... it turns out the name Foxy was a Criterion invention.  The character's name in the English credits is Little Ko.  So I opted to go with the official English credits even though it's a name I'm not used to...

Having previewed what Schmidlap has been doing, all I can say is... We are going to be in for a real treat. Looks like I won't even need to mess with my own hybrid.

This sounds awesome! Thanks for all of your hard work!

Matt, your Hard Boiled disc looks absolutely amazing. The video quality is pretty spectacular for an HK film of this era, the subtitles are pretty good, and the audio is just wonderfully clear. I can imagine Criterion (if they were ever to get the rights again) releasing something very similar, complete with identical contrast/brightness corrections (that go a long way btw) so good job on that too.

Thanks. I appreciate it. That thing nearly killed me. I am still tired! :)

I wish I was better at subtitles. I would have changed the timing and such, but all I was able to do was work with what I had and re-word the script according to my consultation with my Canto speaking pal.

I downloaded your subtitles for Hardboiled and there were a handful of errors in it. I fixed them for my copy.

Simple ones too.

Hi Ben

Could you tell me where the errors are or share your .srt file with us?

I truly appreciate all your hard work.

I thoroughly enjoyed the treat that this rendition was and could not be happier.

Thank you.

Ben,

If you are talking about my subs I have fixed all the errors. Many have checked and didn't find any. It's quite possible that one of my links has the old version. I will check and get back to you all.

Please remember that editing subs is tedious business. I have no one checking my work.

The ones at this link definitely had errors, although my personal copy is now so different from yours for non-error-correction reasons that I can't really provide an itemized list, sorry.  Things I remember are: lots of OCR errors where a lowercase L was confused with an I and that sort of thing (not visible when rendered in a typical sans-serif font, but still), a few missing articles here and there (get him to hospital, he joined triads in 85), equipped with one "P", matter of time spelled "metter", "happent" instead of "happen", "feeing better now", "disappoinment", and a few others I'm afraid I just don't remember.

EDIT: It's coming back to me now... Sui wasn't capitalized once, triad(s) was capitalized inconsistently (I opted for lowercase).  There was a line that went: "- A criminal./- A criminal?" and the punctuation on the two lines was reversed (question should come last).  And yeah... you have my sympathies on the subtitle editing front...

I noticed the lower case "l"/upper case "I" thing when I took a quick look at the sub file. I think the substitution only occurs when the subs are presented in italics and was likely intentional for aesthetic reasons.

This is my fault. I passed on the subs to Matt so he could do a re-translation with a friend of some moments. It was a fresh rip from the R2 DVD by me and the character map in the programme is not the best. Thought Id corrected all of them but missed the italics like Griff said.

Noticed a few in The Killer ive done also.

Any chance of somebody sharing the corrected version?

I'll have BOTH subtitles files completely corrected. Hard Boiled already is (i'll send it to you now) and The killer is nearly there. Just a tiny bit left to do.

*sigh* I have tried to have that one removed and replaced with my updated one, but it isn't working out. Annoying because all of those things are fixed.

As long as those are fixed, that's fine.  I did have one question about an awkward exchange (maybe also fixed).  In the conversation between Tequila and Long on the boat, Tequila asks "Should I salute you?" twice.  Is that the real translation of the second question?

The whole message was as follows -

The Killer

After battling with Adobe Encore to build a Bluray over the past week I have decided to do a 720p mkv release first.

Story so far.....

I have a 1080p master rendered out of Premiere at a whopping 238GB. It is in the UT 422 Codec which is the best compression on a lossless codec available on the net. Looks good.
I have a uncompressed 5.1 wav rendered of my custom ReMix and the original Mono Laserdisc.

I encoded a .h264 1080p @ 21000 bitrate file. Looked good. Went in to encore o.k. All was fine untill it came to building the finished disc which through various error messages at me that I finally tracked to the video file which according to encore support must not 'exacly' be in Blu-ray spec!
O.K need to re-render it (last encode took 20Hrs)
With me having to do this re-encode I went back to my timeline in  premiere and made a few more tweeks to the edit, toneing down the grain a bit and alittle more colour correction.
Did a variaty of test encodes to try and nail the settings with no luck (tho the quality because of my tweeks looked better). until I used Adobe Media Encoder which worked perfectly.
But when i compared the Adobe Encode to my x264 encode the Adobe one looked poor! Not happy with it.

Went ahead and did a Blu ray Disc build anyway. It worked Menus and all apart from the subtitles which were out of sync and had lost alot of the formating (Italics were gone).
There are other options to import subtitles and maybe a way to patch the final Disc image. If anybody knows anything about this let me know:) Ill continue to research and try various methods but it may take sometime.

So for a 25gig BD image to be finished and uploaded I want it to be perfect really, or at least close. So the battle goes on.

I thought a 8gig 720p encode using x264 with all the audio options would be the best option for now. Ive made it compatable for AVCHD also by encoding the 5.1 to Dolby Digital Plus (640kbps) and keeping the Mono track (Dual mono) PCM (which is what a few wanted anyway).
Compared to the original 1080p master the 720p x264 encode is almost as good. It looses no resolution with it being a upscale anyway.
The Dolby 5.1 remix track sounds good. not quite the same as the DTS-HD encode Ive done but close enough where most people would not notice.

I ask a favor if its o.k, If you could upload or help upload/seed this as a torrent or share links from your own seed box/online storage and spread it far and wide that would be awesome. Not got the experience or time to keep seeding ect as I have to move around and use my computer for work so internet connection and constant seeding are not possible.

Here are the links.
