Well, I recall watching this movie on VHS in my childhood, and just recently I saw the special edition. (BTW, typing that just made me realize that maybe Disney has thinking like George Lucas before they bought Lucasfilms.) If you want to preserve the colors of the 3D-edition, at least mux both the left AND right sides and compare them to the 2D-version. If you compare both sides to the 2D-version, you will (hopefully) see which side is the closest to the 2D-version.
