Oh yeah. I became a master of editing autoexec.bat and config.sys to get them to run, and to extract every scrap of memory possible. X-Wing had to run on EMS memory (unlike just about every other DOS game at the time which used XMS). That was a pain to configure. I had a bootdisk for every game.
