Star Wars: Episode VII to be directed by J.J. Abrams **NON SPOILER THREAD** — Page 24

That's all very true.

I'm just saying that it's a bit much for people to say that they don't like the new direction Abrams took with Trek, when Trek has already been taken in a bunch of other different directions, none of which seems to have pleased anywhere near a majority of the fanbase in a very long time.

After ST09 I would bet my left nut that nearly every ST fan was just so relieved they were past the Rick Berman era. Even if they didn't like certain aspects of the reboot, they were just happy to have a fresh take on ST (and one that wouldn't mess with the original timeline).

LOL!

Well, here's to hoping and praying that J.J. actually does do a good job, and gives us a solid story and an entertaining film that's a worthy addition to the Star Wars films.

Lindelof won't be a part of the new trilogy, so that automatically gives me hope. If this Arndt fellow can whip up a good script JJ will do a great job. But if the script sucks, the movie will suck.

They don't want to heavily depend on any preexisting EU stories, so the challenge is then coming up with a fresh take on where the OT characters would be 30 years later. My main concern is that it will end up feeling like a knockoff of better EU stories that cover similar ground.

To be honest, if the PT hadn't been such a let down, Star Wars fans would probably be even more united in their opinions.

Definately. Any major conflict between the fans would have probably consisted of whether or not the EU should be considered canon or not.

One thing that gives hope is that the new trilogy probably won't be a story about annoying troubled kid growing up (like PT). I hope Lucas now wrote an enjoyable story. If so, I have no doubt Arndt will write a good screenplay.

Well according to my information, Lucas provided the basic story treatment. Please correct me if I am wrong (with link/reference).

The early reports mentioned that he wrote a short treatment, and that was what the scripts were to be based on.

“In the future it will become even easier for old negatives to become lost and be “replaced” by new altered negatives. This would be a great loss to our society. Our cultural history must not be allowed to be rewritten.” - George Lucas

" I have story treatments of 7, 8, and 9, and a bunch of other movies and obviously we have hundreds of books and comics and everything you could possibly imagine.  So I sort of moved that treasure trove of stories and various things to Kathy, and I have complete confidence that she’s gonna take them and make great movies.”

We don't know whether or not they will actually use the treatments or not, but I imagine Kennedy would want to at least respect GL and use them as a starting point.

I think that he probably had treatments for these in some form or another back in the early eighties at the latest.

Mark Hamill's comments in a 1983 interview confirmed that GL was at least  considering an EP VII and had a story in mind.  And Dale Pollack wrote in his book that GL let him read the treatments for all of the sequels, including 7-12:

“It was originally a 12-part saga. The three most exciting stories were 7, 8 and 9. They had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, ‘I want to see these 3 movies."

Now whether or not these treatments are still relevant or will have any impact on EP VII is yet to be determined.

It also depends "when" Pollack read those treatments. I mean, if it was before Empire and Jedi were released, then maybe what he read as "7,8,9" was part of Empire and Jedi (that he did not see yet). I don't remember his interview that well, I should check it again. Was it clear he saw those treatment after the whole OT was released? It was in People vs Lucas, right?

He read the treatments at least before jedi while working on his book, which was published in '84, i believe.  But according to a recent article, he still believes that what he read will be the basis for the new trilogy.

"Pollack calls the prequel trilogy “dreadful” but has very positive things to say about the ideas behind the potential next two trilogies, stories he confidently believes Disney will use, claiming they represent one of the reasons Disney made the acquisition.

But I don't know anything about Pollack.  He may not know what he's talking about, and those treatments could be completely obsolete now.  If anyone here knows Michael Arndt, just give him a call and get back to us.  :)

Word has it that in about one hour Lucas will be making an announcement at Disneyland. Some think it will be the confirmation of "the big three" coming back for the seventh film.

Yea, I know TFN isn't a great source but it's the only one with a compiled explanation of the rumor. The third update says nothing is planned but some are still optimistic.

One good thing you can say about TPM is that it's prepared us all to not get too excited about Episode VII. Kinda like if you've been in one car crash, you might drive with a little more caution next time.

On the evidence so far, J.J.Abrams is a modestly talented Director with a taste for ludicrous scripts.  But as with Star Trek you didn't care so much about the huge plot holes because you were having so much fun with a cast of great characters.

If he can pull off 'characters' and 'fun' he's already doing better than the Lucas' last 3 efforts. I hope ST Into Darkness is damn good, otherwise it's gonna be a worrying couple of years.

But what worries me the most is that Disney signed up the original cast and set a release date the instant after Lucas sold them SW.  So basically the whole cast of elderly and now slighty rotund OT characters are going to be in VII whether Abrams can find a plausible reason for them being there or not.

Hamill had to be in VII. I think most of us have always imagined he'd be the new Obi-Wan figure running a reborn Jedi temple in VII.  Mark's age will actually add to the depth of the character and story. But I can't see any good reason for the rest of the cast to be there.  Plus you know Hamill's a fanboy like the rest of us and will bring his absolute A-game.

Just realised that Disney and Lucas are both responsible for a lot of the most ill-judged unintentionaly racist atrocities in film history:

God knows what they could dream up together! The above article doesn't even cover the Ewoks sounding like Hindus and Disney's short films from the thirties.

Also factor in that ILM where part of the team beind the imfamous 'Mudflap and Skids' characters from Transformers 2 and you've got a recipe for disaster!

I agree that Nute Gunray and his race are totally based on Japanese people... I kept expecting to hear one of the exclaim "Oh, no, it's Godzilla!", while pointing out of a window. But Watto is NOT modeled after a Jewish person... he's the stereotypical Arabic bazaar owner... Middle Eastern accent, a five o'clock shadow, and he keeps women as slaves.

The thing is the Gunray accent was totally comical. It was like a Benny Hill piss take (rubbery instead of lovely) it was utterly pathetic. Here's a character who were supposed to believe is sinister and we just end up laughing at him! Great way to set a scene! Is this a fantasy/comedy? What's goin on? Lol

Animator Rob Coleman admitted he drew inspiration from Alec Guinness' Fagin in David Lean's Oliver Twist for Watto (A portrayal by Sir Alec that had the film banned in Israel - Rightly or wrongly... wrongly IMO).

I love Watto. Probably my favourite PT character (Probably beacuse he has some!), sure he does say he loves "Only money" and deal in slaves but you can tell he's a softie at heart.
