My HARD BOILED Audio is now fully EQ'd so that's a wrap. 16 bit 48kHz waveform that is actually more in sync than any version ever released for home viewing. And frankly, certain sections are now more in sync than the theatrical prints.

Later this week I'll finish editing the subtitles and then try to create my first test burn.

Hi Matt.

The subs I sent you are from the U.K Tartan Asia Extreme DVD release which are the best translation I know of available. I resynced them to the Japanese blu and they seem to work well, is there some problems you know of with the translation or timing?

Author
Time

No, not really. I extended some timing here and there, but did not really check all that much for that.

My issue with that translation is some of the verbiage is very British in nature so I tried to give it a more generic Western style. I also rewrote some lines with my Canto speaking friend. He's always complained about some of the dialog sounding stiff in the English when in the Cantonese their dialog is snappy and "cool."

I have just finished my work and am burning a test disc. Those of you who love this film should really buy the Japanese Blu-Ray. I'll Torrent the PCM audio track and make the subtitles available.

Awesome Matt. Your work on the mono audio track is amazing and I thank you for all the work done on this.

I look forward to your work on the new subs, hopefully will put together a great ultimate version Im almost there with The Killer not including the 5.1 remix Im working on. Would be nice to nail this.

SO you suggest buying the Japanese blu and then muxing it?

Where is the best place to get the blu?

The Blu-Ray works great. I'm all finished. Ready to Torrent the audio (it'll be my first torrent so I kinda haven't a clue how to do it, lol!).

Amazon Japan and YesAsia both have the Japanese version of the Blu-Ray. Don't buy the American or HK by mistake! Mux the audio and subs and you are golden.

It's averaging $29.50 right now and that is dirt cheap for a Japanese BD.

Today I got my shipement from yesasia containing the japanese BDs of "The Killer" and "Hard Boiled", together with the Hong Kong BDs of "The Killer" and "Bullet in the Head".

Short story: The japanese BD of "The Killer" is quite a shame calling it a BD. Okay, it need about 20 gig of space, but the quality is.. very bad.

I am not that critical person, because I really seen bad DVD releases in GErmany, only gladful that we even got movies, but here I will stick with my e-m-s DVD for sure:

Bummer! Had high hopes.

Is the audio mix the same as the Hong Kong BD?

I have no possibility to check, because I lack knowledge how to measure it.

The japanese has thre Audio potions, as far as I see the japanese language they seem all be same language.

- 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio

- 7.1 Dolby True HD

- 6.1 Dolby Digital Surround EX

I think the coming A Better Tomorrow trilogy discs will be an equal disapointement, because they also seemed to be licensed from Fortune Star, as "The Killer".

I still plan on taking care of a Criterion Collection Laserdisc audio restoration. it's just that my plate is full and can only go one step at a time.

If I could get help with the POLICE STORY subtitles, I could finish that off real quick and get right onto THE KILLER.

If and when you do work on the Criterion audio for The Killer, the only things I see that need addressing are the very few pops that cause some dialogue or sound interruption (I think there's like 3-4 of these max) but more importantly there's a high frequency hum that goes through at least 3/4ths of the film. It is sometimes drowned out by the soundtrack but definitely there. I checked my own CLV disc and it is there as well, so it is indeed something inherent in the transfer or source material.

solo, that hum is inherent to numerous LD's since those particular titles had the sound taken from the 35mm optical sound tracks instead of the actual mag tapes. I have a lot of work to do on The Killer and Police Story.

Hard Boiled proved much easier. I did not use any hiss or hum reduction at all because it just doesn't need it. Criterion has much better elements to work with on that one.

Are the audio track and subtitles up yet? Where can I get them?

50/50 shots, with the original RAW Japanese on left and the right side being my re-authored, brightness corrected version.

Gents (and ladies) I would love to share the subtitles and audio. Question is, how?

What would you all recommend? What's the best way?

P.S. For some reason the images get cropped by the forum on the right side. No idea how to fix this.

Thanks, I appreciate the response. I was about to say that the Fox Lorber Killer disc has the same hum but at an even worse volume level. Makes perfect sense since an optical track was used. Criterion states that they had access to the 3 track magnetic master audio for Hard Boiled.

Whoa! There's a definite difference there!

The only thing is that we can't exactly tell what is supposed to be saturated and what is supposed to be bright. Part of me likes the appearance of the new Japanese disc until some sequences are over-brightened and lack the color saturation in some of the setting lighting, and the tweaked version appears far more balanced yet the depth of saturation in the blues/purples of the background has never seemed right to me on other transfers on DVD.

Either way, this is the best the film has ever looked on home video. I just wish there was an accurate source we could work from.

For hard Boiled, it is so completely spectacularly superior to the other versions, I am satisfied. If nothing else ever happens with this film, I won't mind. I have a version i am happy with.

Now for THE KILLER, it's criminal that we cannot have a true High Def transfer. I've witnessed the film in a theater in glorious 35mm and I know what it is supposed to look like. The Blu-Rays and DVD's do not due it justice.

Spleen?

I would think that you could certainly share your entire custom BD with the tweaked image there. I only have a few Spleen invites, but how many would be willing to download an entire BD? They may suffice.

Failing that, you could always use a public tracker. Whether or not you make the torrent file publicly available would be up to you.

if you upload to spleen I promise to seed it on my seedbox for a long time :)

I'd personally be willing to seed a full custom BD of Hard Boiled with that beautiful color-corrected image if Matt_Stevens was willing to upload it. I first saw the movie on the Criterion DVD. The difference, judging by the screeencaps, looks stunning.

I forgot about MySpleen. Gimme a day, gents. I have a busy schedule, but will see about getting this seeded. Once I get it up (bad pun) I will need everyone to participate in seeding. More bad puns. :)

UPDATE: OK, my MySpleen username is now invalid. That's odd. Any ideas?

I had to re-register some time back. Maybe they had a spring clean of unused accounts some time ago.

I too can send you an invite.

Just to put it out there, I wouldn't be opposed to a spleen invite myself. And I definitely would seed this. :)

Even iof a bit offtopic, regarding "A Better Tomorrow" Trilogy.

My japanese Discs arrived today, and they also look exactly like the Hong Kong Discs. As with the Killer it is just the Fortune Star upconversion... :(
