Star Wars Colortiming & Cinematography (was What changes was done to STAR WARS in '93?) — Page 14

Outstanding! They look great - nice to see those shots looking like film again, and not the initially impressive, but tiring on the eyes after a while, artificially sharpened mess that is the official release.

The colors really remind me of the screenings of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and The Blues Brothers that I recently attended at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, CA.

Both of them seemed to be modern LPP prints, and CE3K was the late-90s "Director's Cut" restoration, but they both had similar color timing to this. Lots of green and blue in the shadows/darker midtones, slightly off-white/pinkish whites, etc. (And like these images, they seemed to be a tad dark/dim, as if the projector's light source wasn't bright enough. No slight to -1, I know the brightness/contrast/gamma will be corrected later.)

My point is, with the higher resolution and improved compression, I can finally appreciate the quality of this print. I could imagine seeing an LPP print projected in a theater, looking like this.

I think you're close to answering a question I've had for a while. That is: what makes a color film from the 70s (and, possibly, earlier) look like a color film from the 70s? There seems to be a set of difficult-to-identify qualities that, when combined, result in the warm magic we see in the PuggoGrande and in -1's images.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

thanks.

there will definitely be some 'bootleg' screening(s)

of these prints in a theater later this year. i plan to

invite all my friends that would find it interesting.

we'll have a secondary sound source

for english. but if that doesn't work out, we'll fall back

to a digital projection..

if/when it happens, i'll take plenty of pictures and

videos of it.

I can tell you from personal experience that this is very difficult to achieve. The speed of a film projector isn't a solid 24 fps and you'll end up going out of sync even if you manage to hit the play button on the secondary source fast enough.

PS I am assuming that you are thinking of running the film print through a projector and the sound through a cd player or mp3 player... This is what I had to do when the answer print for a film festival I was projecting had sound that was way out of sync, and we had to burn the sound files to a cd, and sit next to a stereo with our finger on the pause button, waiting for the smpte countdown to hit 2. We would sometimes be off by a few milliseconds and that would mess the whole sync and no way to turn off the projector and rewind.

What’s the internal temperature of a TaunTaun? Luke warm.

A real theather MIGHT have a setup that allows automatic syncing of the soundtrack to the film. (the projector basicly tells the computer what frame its on and the computer auto syncs it iirc)

Definitely something to enquire about beforehand.

Yes, this technology exists, (it's known simply as DTS) but you have to have the DTS time code printed on the side of the film AND the CD in the sound system has to be conformed to this time code as well.

As far as I know, there are no DTS prints or CDs for the original Star Wars.

Ah my bad...seems like an issue then.

Those shots that went through minimal conversion before being put into jpg form look really great in over all detail and image quality. :)

And wow, that shot below of the Death Star conference room you posted from that other site has some of the best skin tones I've seen. Must be from a really good source, finally an image from the movie that maintains the proper fair skin tones, so natural and realistic, just excellent. If the color correction being applied to the the 35 print can achieve skin tones like that, it will be a huge improvement over any home video we've seen before. :)

it might be tricky.. but we'll test it out before showing it.

of course once all the reels are spliced together, it shouldn't

be that hard to get a sound synced to it... the fallback is just

to show the digital version..

Just using the auto/tone auto/color features in photoshop show how nice this can look!

add a touch of focal blade to sharpen, and these are just using the low res samples -1 posted.  I'm so psyched about this project!

i like the soft look to it also snicker..

we'll adjust the contrast and the colors,

maybe not that much..

but interestingly enough, as i keep mentioning

it looks quite different on a tv, than on computer monitors..

hmmm.. maybe some previews?!

Previews would definitely be a good idea to see how the colors "respond" to different types of monitors etc. People could also give their input on various things etc.

Oooohhh! I'm looking forward to that preview :-D

You should consider doing a teaser trailer, if you have the time; sounds like a fun mini-project.
