Not when it comes to the Sith, you can't.

I was always under the impression that Vader was labeled a Sith Lord in the script/officially-licensed products, and the fact that the Emperor could use Force powers implied that he was as well. I never saw any problem with the Sith being expanded upon for that reason, to be honest.
