Could Fox release the OT?

<- -Speculation- ->
What are the chances that Fox could release the Original Trilogy? (besides slim and none) Fox has a contract which gives them sole distribution rights to the Original Trilogy. If Lucas continues to proclaim that his yet even more special editions are the only version he will promote/release/distribute, could that mean that the OT might be considered in the Public Domain, or in Fox's case be controlled by them for at least distribution? Sure it would mean some mean legal entanglements, but i wouldn't put it past a company to attempt something new with their 'hot' "property", maybe a Netflicks-like distribution. Or maybe Fox will figure out how to 'beam' their movies to theaters directly and beat Lucas to his own game.

Lucas did mention that one of the reasons for the current DVDs was that he felt that online piracy was something to contend with and that if he didn't release them now there might not be another chance to gain as much profit. Of course he might have a multilayered plan for the DVDs, which could include the Original Trilogy in a future, after the first 6 release. Has their been any word if Hyperspace might somehow stream a signifant piece of SW lore?

Fox had distribution rights. However, since they do not own the material itself, they can do nothing. Regardless of what GL declares, Star Wars, Luke Skywalker, et all, are all copyrighted and trademarked to lucasfilm. Therefore, nothing involving those names or likenesses will ever be "public domain".

Here's anything you want to know about copyrights.

How Long Does Copyright Protection Last?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long does a copyright last?
The term of copyright for a particular work depends on several factors, including whether it has been published, and, if so, the date of first publication. As a general rule, for works created after Jan. 1, 1978, copyright protection lasts for the life of the author plus an additional 70 years. For an anonymous work, a pseudonymous work, or a work made for hire, the copyright endures for a term of 95 years from the year of its first publication or a term of 120 years from the year of its creation, whichever expires first. For works first published prior to 1978, the term will vary depending on several factors. To determine the length of copyright protection for a particular work, consult chapter 3 of the Copyright Act (title 17 of the United States Code). More information on the term of copyright can be found in Circular 15a, Duration of Copyright, and Circular 1, Copyright Basics.

Do I have to renew my copyright?
No. Works created on or after Jan. 1, 1978, are not subject to renewal registration. As to works published or registered prior to Jan. 1, 1978, renewal registration is optional after 28 years but does provide certain legal advantages.

OK, so, I'll see you guys in 2124, when I'll own my OT hologram copy implanted in my cyber-brain. I'll be 142 years old, and I'll have the world record for oldest man ever, beating the prior record by more than 2 decades.

It does piss me off we are getting pan scan copies on DVD but not the original trilogy. I blame fox for this. Lucas hates pan scan probably more then the original versions. Why he released The Phantom Menace widescreen only at first and why he has an article at Starwars.com encouraging you to buy the widescreen version. Id take an unfinished movie over a cut up one anyday.

That was the only time I have ever bought a fullscreen DVD over a widescreen one. Look at any comparison screen for that movie and you will understand why I made that descign. Star Wars however was filmed in widescreen and watching it chopped up just sucks.

As much as it pains me, Jimbo's right about the fact that T3 was released on DVD in 4:3 open matte fullscreen.

I'm sure he bought the 'foolscreen' edition because he gets an extra half second of nipplege, and with his loathsome misogynistic personality likely to ensure that he dies a virgin it's probably the only way for him to experience the female form.

EDIT: Broken links. omg masturbatory heaven article

No, he's not right. Cropping is evident on all 4 sides of the movie - why? Because that was the intended framing. T3 is a terrible movie, but opening the matte doesn't help.

Oh I'm not saying that 4:3 is the intended framing of T3, but for Jimbo the idea of more picture = more nudity was too enticing a prospect.

And sticking an extended Jenna and Sylvia scene in this film would not save it from being anything but bottom of the barrel dreck, although they might sell a few more units.

Widescreen Pretty good article on pan scan of Star Wars. Plus yeah I always by the version with most boobs. I think if Fox begged Lucas to release originals he would. With these DVDs selling faster and harder then any night alone I doubt we will see them.
