Yoda's line of "Too old! Yes, too old to begin the training"...

In the OT Yoda says “Too old! Yes, too old to begin the training.” I always thought this was brilliant scriptwriting. Yoda is obviously nervous about training Luke and trying to avoid it. He grasps at a series of less and less substantive excuses which Obi Wan deconstructs. His last effort is this silly excuse that has nothing to do with anything. I loved it, it was great characterization for Yoda and a wonderful scene.

But then the PT establishes that there was an official age by which to begin training and people were screened out all the time. Now in ESB Yoda is saving one of his best excuses for last. The new context ruined the scene for me. MAYBE I just misunderstood how it was meant, but if so, Yoda’s delivery is inconsistent with what he is talking about. This change (which wasn’t necessary at ALL. And would have saved us the little kids finding the lost planet in II) completely drained the life out of that scene.

Sorry, I just wanted to gripe and didn’t know where else to file it. It’s nice to have listeners.

I hear ya. The jedi training, as it appears in the movies, seems really poor to me. These kids have no opportunity to build any kind of real view of what interpersonal relationships and interactions are. How are you supposed to raise jedi who know good from evil if they are brought up in an emotional vaccuum? This is not a way to give Jedi more control over their emotion,s it's a way to make them all the more succeptable to emotions when they finally venture out into the big wide galaxy, full of experiences so far beyond their realm of comprehension. I would think it would be much safer to train Jedi once they are old enough to fulloy comprehend and accept the immense responsibility that is inherent with the choice. A well balanced adult capable of making such a decission.

yeah , I was watching Attack of the clones the other day and it struck me how stupid Obi-Wan suddenly became in that scene
let me paraphrase: "this is where the Planet should be, and gravity around the empty spot is still behaving as if the planet was still there, But Damn I can't see the planet? Where'd dat pesky planet go?" it sounds like something George W. would say, it shouldn't take a five year old to figure that the planet has been erased from the chart. I think George has been on a big kick to get as many children as he can into the prequals to make up for the fact that there weren't any at all in the Original trilogy.

I concur

“You know, when you think about it, the Ewoks probably just crap over the sides of their tree-huts.”

That is an interesting way to look at it. I've never really cared for small children in movies either way. Infact, I never really noticed their absence in the OT. But now that I think of it, the only kids were the Ewok babies.
