I don't have a copy of the book anymore but that's the origin of the missed hook.  Maybe also for "So's life" ?

No the  "She is Beautiful" line in the detention block i believe is either in the Novelization or the Radio Drama.  Never was in the film.

Some dialogue in the shooting script was shot like "and you call yourselves humans"

I doubt they ever shot Harrison saying escaping this place will be like flying through the five fire rings of fornax or whatever he says in the book.

With Disney owning LFL would it be more possible to get a release of the Lost Cut?

The same Disney that will never ever release The Thief and the Cobbler, and the same Disney that closed LucasArts and cancelled The Clone Wars?

.........maybe!

Disney is more likely to remove Jabba The Hutt from the entire series because his lego playset upset a group of Muslims.

The "Lost Cut" still exists in its complete form in the Lucasfilm archives. It was documented in one issue of Star Wars insider a number of years back. It's only in black and white and silent (although the audio track is also probably buried in the vaults somewhere because we see a section of the lost cut in the deleted cantina scene). Containing 30-40% different footage and David West Reynolds was lucky enough to view it in its entirety. If the missing grappling hook scene ever existed then it would have been in the Lost Cut and he would be the person who could once and for all clear this myth up

I've sent him a letter to ask, it can't hurt.

I'm sure I forgot a lot of examples, but time is money...

And even if it did, no audience saw a silent B&W film when they saw Star Wars in the theatre anyways.

Well, you guys haven't done a whole lot to raise my hopes ;) but I hope one day someone will relent and let us see that additional footage.  Star Wars is a movie with so much history, and I think it's a shame to keep some of that history locked in a vault, rotting away.

Color Dailies exist. Many of which are the same scenes as in the lost cut. Not sure which footage is technically lost and they would have to use the black and white for those scenes.

Some of the color dailies have been seen but not all in the 2004 documentary, and some on the blu ray in the deleted scenes.

The 77, 1997 are lost cuts since no new transfer was made for DVD or blu ray.

Would kind of be weird for the John Jympson cut on Blu Ray when the actual real trilogy from 1977-1983 is only available from a 1993 laserdisc print.

And Disney has no plans to change Lucas revisionism/destruction of a cultural icon.

I had no idea this thread would survive almost ten years....

Anyway, with the rumours of Disney actually working on a new 4K transfer of the original trilogy, the possibility of this lost cut being released suddenly got a bit better.

Um, the only reason thread survived 10 years is because you bumped it. Otherwise it would have been closer to 9.

Nine years? So are you saying the thread has been around for "almost ten years"?

In 1977, I clearly remember seeing ANH in a theatre within the first two weeks of its release and the deleted scenes(lost cut) were included in the film. I was 11 years old and saw it twice at the theater. The first time I saw it I clearly remember Luke looking up at a sparkling space battle. Luke speeds past a woman yelling. The Toshi station scene and how dimly lit it was. I remember being sort of confused by these scenes and the pace of the film and it’s connection to the robots in the opening. I always thought that I was imagining all theses memories until the deleted scenes were finally released. The Biggs meeting and Aunt Beru and the pouring of the blue milk was all there. The cantina was weird and stranger. Vader climbed into a fighter near the end and yells as he is spinning away.
The second time I saw ANH, the scenes were cut and film is as we all know it today. I’ve been searching for others who have seen a rough version also and finding more reports that I’m not alone.
The only thing I can figure is that within the first two weeks of distribution the studios released rougher cuts of the 70mm film and these were shown to the public just to get the film out on schedule… within a few short weeks a newer trimmed down distributed film with final cuts was made and theaters were asked to return rough films and/or make cuts to match final release since film copies were expensive and easier to do if certain theaters had the capability… all I know is what I clearly remember, and somewhere other than George’s safe a rough cut still exists… in color and with sound. On a final note, A lot of Star Wars fans back in 77 brought tape recording equipment into shows and made audio tapes. These tapes may prove to be the final answer… that some of us were able to witness something special! The lost rough theatrical release.

Your 100% right it happened, no I’m kidding.

This is referred to as the Mandela Effect. I think your personal memory is due to multiple stacked convoluted memories of the movie, radio dramas, the books, and the various making of’s. We all experience these types of memories to various degrees and the longer ago it was and the more you’ve retold the story the more “real” these jumbled memories become.

This is a fascinating subject all around but… Unless you are now in your 70-80’s and were in your mid to late twenties in 1976/77 oh and a select member of the film making elite who actually saw a rough cut without score and parts in black and white. I must call poodoo on this.

Either that OR you really are from an alternate dimension! And somehow you’ve became stuck in our apparently lacking one!

That’s really interesting – didn’t know it had a name.

Getting back to topic, I saw SW as a teenager soon after it came out (70MM, Paramus NJ), but sadly it wasn’t the Lost Cut version.

I’ve described the Mandela Effect elsewhere.

What it is in most cases (I believe) is people filling their faulty memories with other people’s faulty memories.

What a lot of people are remembering, in the case of Star Wars, is probably the novelization.

The shot of Luke looking up at the star destroyer as just a faint glint in the distance is one I wish still could have made it into the movie above all deleted scenes, yet the pacing obviously puts Luke earlier and indicates a more traditional pacing.

Hallo & Greetings from Germany!
Nice to see that here was interest in a “lost” or rough cut of STAR WARS (1977) and that also my now extended 3-hour motion picture fan edit “STAR WARS (1977) - BERND DÖTZERs FINAL CUT (BDFC)” is named in a reply, posted long ago. Perhaps here is still life! 😃
I can feel with the fans who would love to see more of EPISODE 4 - or think or know that they have seen a different version in the cinema long ago, but never being released again.
For you here is a new hope, at least to watch the first 30 minutes of my nostalgic 3h edit, which is a project in SD and Stereo (not in HD and Surround XYZ), started in 1998. Now a 25-year project.
I’m a fan edit dinosaur: when the Phantom Edit was making it’s round in Hollywood, I still had my own version of EPISODE 1 - and of course of EPISODE 4.
Since 1998, I inserted nearly year for year new scenes into my E4 and later E1 extended project, using cut, restored and selfmade scenes. I developed my own technique to create new STAR WARS scenes by using existing sound (for example original casting recordings) and existing image scenes from the original movies, calling it SNER (Szenen-Neu-Erschaffung durch Recycling = scene recreation through recycling), or winkingly “dötzing scenes”.
All this and my personal feeling I have for the original STAR WARS genre (yours may be different), led to this for sure unique version, even not existing in the Lucasfilm archives:
A 3h STAR WARS (1977), edited very well, mostly in colour with some B/W material, rarely some scenes like animatics from video games or with action figures (in theory these are the scenes in the print, Lucasfilm has to replace with photorealistic scenes), and completey edited in story and sound, it has the feeling as a never-before-seen extended version of STAR WARS, before it was cut down to 2 hours. Something which was showed to the makers and collaborators of the film in the THX cinema long ago, in 1977, and then put away into the archive, to be never been screened again.
With this story in mind, some open fans can for sure watch STAR WARS from 1977 for the very first time again.
Forget all the talks “the film is better without the Biggs scenes” or “the torture of Princess Leia was and will never be part of the film” or “a second trench run of Luke is a bad idea” … they are wrong! In my fan edit it is all there, most cut scenes ever released or talked about, lots of new scenes developing deeper characters and plot strings. And the nostalgic STAR WARS feeling. It’s all working! If you are open minded and ready for an edit in VHS quality, as it could have been viewed in 1977 in a room at THX.
So I see and feel it. What you feel, may be different.
For me, it’s on Lucasfilm to release extended versions in perfect image and sound quality!
As fans we have seen the movie countless times, because of this every fan should give new versions at least 2 times to watch, in order to overcome the habit.
From early on I creted my own fan edit codex, for example to show my real name and to let the copyright holder know what I’m doing with the movie etc., plus not to share my complete fan edit as download. If you want to see it completely, here in Germany is the possibility, if I organize a screening in a little fan circle.
But the first 30 minutes, as proof and experience what could be, to fulfill some fan’s dream of … why not.
Enough talk!
I will give you, who like me always wanted to see more of STAR WARS (1977), finally the chance to watch the first 30 minutes of my 3h fan edit “STAR WARS (1977) - BDFC”. With this you experience complete Biggs on Tatooine - and much more until farewell.
For this you have to join my facebook group “BERND DÖTZERs FINAL CUT - BDFC: Extended STAR WARS, CONAN & more”, there you will find a link to the video (as long as it works).
My group is no problem, omly infos about my fan edits and other own works. And there will be announcements for screenings, if I organize one. If you enter the group, please do not give the link of the “first 30 minutes video” to others outside the group. It is fair after 25 years of fan editing that if you want to watch it, you join my group. The video starts with a 15 minutes intro to give background and set you in the mood of 1977, before the 30 minutes of “STAR WARS (1977) - BDFC” are running. Please watch the intro and then let the show flow with you!
May the Force be with us!
