what about the episodes with Sarah Jane and the one with Jo Grant?  those seem like more than just tongue-in-cheek references.
Both of those were RTD, not Moffat.

If those old guys would confuse you, you are not a real Whovian.   Also keep in mind, this isn't an anniversary of the new series, this is the 50th anniversary of the beginning of the original series.
Which I think is my point, Moffat doesn't care about the rest of the series, only the bits he created.
