Star Wars Trailers

As I was trying to research the topic of Star Wars trailers, I was rather shocked by the lack of resources on the topic. I eventually had to resort to using ImperialFighter’s list (http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Imps-MOVIE-TRAILER-SHOWCASE-Past-Present-and-Coming-Soon/topic/11782/) and a little bit of this: http://www.swonvideo.com/vcd/imageslarge/vvcdstarwarstrailersback.jpg although I am not sure how accurate or helpful that second one actually was. Sorry if the formatting is messed up, it was an absolute pain to try and wrestle with this posting editor. So:

     1) Does some wonderful database of all Star Wars trailers exist and I have just not found it, or is this about as good as it gets?

    2) Is the below information accurate?

    3) Could you guys help me fill it out, particularly what the best current sources of each are (and hopefully official names for each)? I anticipate that the EditDroid 4 Disc Set and the 2004 Bonus Disc are the best sources for most, but unfortunately both of my copies are across the ocean so I cannot check myself.

After each trailer below, the words in soft parenthesis are the first words spoken in the trailer, so they can be easily identified. If I un-lazy myself, I may start trying to fill this list out with Youtube links as well.

Aren't these all on the blu-Ray?

Lego Star Wars II has this as a Bonus. Just like how the 2006 GOUT has Lego Stars II as a Bonus.

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Team_Negative1 did an amazing restoration of this trailer recently. I'd say that's the best source (sans watermark, of course).

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

There often seems to be alot of confusion on the release order of the trailers for ESB, not really surprising as they are mislabeled on the official 2004 bonus DVD as well.

1979 Teaser Trailer #1 [McQuarrie] ("The Empire has been repulsed")

See my post here: http://originaltrilogy.com/forum/topic.cfm/Dolby-Digital-41-Surround-Alien-Anthology/post/579347/#TopicPost579347 different cropping and lack of logo on the 2004 DVD version. Never seen a full scope version of either one.

1979 Teaser Trailer #2 ("Luke Skywalker and Han Solo rescued the princess")

^ Ford narration, it is mislabeled Launch Trailer on the 2004 bonus DVD. The official release is in solid quality, seems to be exactly the same one used on the Editdroid disc.

1979, 1980 Teaser Trailer #3 [Vivaldi] ("A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away")

Not found on the official 2004 bonus DVD, as already mentioned Team -1 have beautifully restored a scope version recently. Looks fantastic! I've heard that there should exist one without narration but I don't know if it's true or not. What you saw on Youtube is most definitely a fan-recreation, the original contains blue AT-AT laser fire.

1980 Theatrical Trailer ("The new chapter in the continuing Star Wars saga is now in our galaxy")

Not found on the official 2004 bonus DVD, as mentioned above the '79 Teaser took its place. Found on the Editdroid disc, Ok quality but cropped.

1981 Re-Release Trailer ("The Star Wars saga continues, returning for a limited engagement")

Not found on the official 2004 bonus DVD or Editdroid. Source ???

1982 Re-Release Trailer ("The Star Wars Saga continues, with a special limited engagement of")

Visually identical to the '80 Theatrical, just different announcement. Included on the 2004 bonus DVD. The official release is in solid quality but cropped, seems to be exactly the same one used on the Editdroid disc.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Where is this restored trailer on the new blog?

One of my favourites is the early '90s trailer for the widescreen collection on VHS: http://youtu.be/mWxb3rmsp_w

I have it on the Die Hard widescreen VHS, but 1) it's a strange field-blended conversion (i.e. PAL format but does not have PAL speedup) and 2) the tape's pretty worn out and has loads of dropouts.

I also have the 2006 individual DVDs trailer as a MOV file, not sure where it came from but it has a Hyperspace watermark.

Edit: This one: http://youtu.be/1Q5kgNqryHY

The MOV is only 15fps and has heavily compressed audio, so quality is about the same as this Youtube version.

Man,  a trailer has never put the hook in me the way that one did. A great look into how truly far far away that galaxy felt when I was a kid. All these years later, that trailer still holds the same magic.

Stupid really, as at the time it was on my little tv in my bedroom. " You can't see fuck all"  is all I'd get from the unknowing bastards. Little did they know!!

I just went to  http://starwars.com/watch/the-movies/2 they have the old trailers from the 70's and 80's.

Like this one:

I think there starting to dig through the archives to find some old sources.

Star Wars trilogy The Definitive Collection VHS Executor Box Set.

Thanks, I assume it's visually identical to the Launch and '82 Re-release?

Agree, I can imagine it may come across as a bit cheesy to some nowadays but I also love the foreign feeling I get from that original teaser, there's a vast unknown galaxy there. To me much of the magic is the music that is used as we are so familiar with Williams score attached to these images.

That is also one of the reason I like the "Vivaldi teaser" for ESB which was done like a spiritual sequel to that original teaser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EH9z8se3Aho despite the cheesy scream by Luke used twice, it was a much better trailer than the earlier one as it show much less of the film.

I remember seeing an early teaser for Revenge Of The Jedi in the cinema which only featured a small selection of still images from the film. One of the pictures was Han Solo tied up to the pole.

Did anyone else see this trailer ?

I saw one like that with the double bill showing of ANH and ESB it ended with a Revenge Of The Jedi card.

There was a bit of a ta do because of Luke in black and Vader being in a lift together and not looking too fighty fighty

I remember watching a dog shit film with Burt Reynolds and Goldie Hawn called Best friends. Only reason being is that they showed the trailer for Jedi before the film.

I watched the trailer, sat thru the film, waited, and watched the trailer again. I even went to the cinema more than once and watched the crappy film just for the trailer.

Im that hard core!!!!

Pretty sure I done the same with another dog shit film with John Travolta and Olivia Newtron Bomb that wasn't Grease.….......Two of a Kind!!! (Thanks IMDB)

I think that had the proper last Return of the Jedi trailer. Christ I was so excited watching those trailers, seeing the poster in the window. Happy fucking days man, happy days!!!

If it helps at all, I have all of the trailers from the DVDs on my Forever Cinematic Trailers YouTube Channel.  Obviously, it's nothing rare here, but just for ease of reference.  They are all available here in at least 480p high quality.  I pride myself on uploading the very best quality possible.  Here's the Star Wars playlist: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLA88AFC9DF7EC3FBA

Nice!

so it seems that the 'Revenge' trailer was with the dog shit Burt Reynolds film and the 'Return' was with the dog shit Travolta film.

Even watching the Jedi trailers now gives me such a happy feeling of the old days. Jesus I was so, so happy watching Jefi for the first time.

It has to be (kids aside) one of my happiest memories ever!

Does anyone know which Empire Trailer is tacked on at the end of the original "Making Of Star Wars" VHS tape?
