I know a lot of people will get upset over my opinion, but I just think this is a very flawed fan edit. The changes, in my opinion, are even worse than what George Lucas did with special editions.

Oh, look. Now there's gajillion more ships flying all around Death Star which is now in orbit of some planet for some reason.

Oh, look. Now there's gajillion more snowspeeders and gajillion more walkers.

Oh, look, now there's music during Obi-Wan VS Darth Vader... that sticks out like a sore thumb, much like Darth Vader's "NOOOOoooo" added in third SE o ROTJ.

And so on and on.

Yet edits by Lucas are met with well deserved criticism while there's a lot of praise for this, dare I say, butchery of worse magnitude?

It's clear you don't understand what Lucas actually did.  The changes aren't the problem.  The erasing of history is the problem.

@Joral: I feel the same way about many of the changes, which is why I don't choose Ady's version as my go to version to watch but I also get why it gets the praise it does. It was an amazing technical achievement for a fanedit and it fixed a lot of things that were much more in need of fixing than some of the things that were done for the offcial SE. But most importantly, it has no ambition of becoming a replacement of the original version, it's simply a fun alternative.

Joral: There's praise for this fan edit because it's the SE-done-right.

George's edits were randomly chosen, tasteless, and poorly implemented.

Examples:

1. randomly chosen: Reduction of matte lines in one shot, but not in the next shot. This inconsistent "modernization" is all over the SEs.

2. tasteless: Rocks in front of R2-D2... 'nuff said.

3. poorly implemented: Look at the messy colors of the 2004 DVD. Look at the terrible Jabba scene in ANH SE. I can go on and on with this one, but you get the point.

Adywan's edits are not like this at all. I invite you to prove me wrong, but please try to form a coherent argument against them, OK? ;)

Well, tastelessness is a matter of taste, so it's hard to "prove" either way.

True, but the other two points I made still count. :-)

In terms of Adywan's edit being the SE we should have had, I don't think anyone can argue with this as it actually has LESS changes than the official SE and addresses many of the official SE's excesses. Ady's version is somewhere in between an enhanced and remastered Theatrical version and George's butchered SE. I fail to see how this is a bad thing.

From a Purist standpoint, the Revisited saga is NOT a preservation, so people need to stop using these tired old arguments against the changes. If you want a preservation, watch the GOUT, or Harmy's or one of a number of other preservations. We can all agree that Ady's edits are preserving more than any official version in existence as it's restoring many things back to how they were in the original release - things we can no longer see in an official Blu Ray release due to George's insistance upon suppressing the Original Unaltered Trilogy.

I'm not sure if Joral's comments were intended to be inflammatory or trolling. His post does seem to be one big Straw Man argument though as his points hinge on Adywan having completely opposite goals to what he's actually trying to achieve.

As I said on Harmy's SW:DE thread, I look at Revisited as the SE as it should be, and Harmy's restorations as the OOT should be (though I have seen dark_jedi's GOUT remaster V3, and it is indeed very good). Therefore, I am going to use 2-disc cases for each film, with both the Revisited and DeSpecialized versions--just as the 2006 DVD cases contain both the SE and the GOUT.

On a side note, I have watched ANH:R a over half a dozen times now from start to finish, and am really excited about ESB:R; while I simply refuse to watch the SEs and most especially the Blurays.

Disagree. Although Ady removed some changes (Greedo shoots first, Jabba's at the Docking Bay), he introduced new shots (the Death Star reveal, the TIE reveal), added new effects (redid all lightsabers & blasters, upgraded the table to holographic, used an explosion from Stargate SG-1), and made further changes (edited Obi & Luke's conversation back to the script from the OOT version, edited Obi & Vader's duel) beyond that. It goes beyond what the SE did while correcting the places where the SE went wrong.

And it was good.

I was really pleased the first time I watched Adywan's edit where he fixed the bad dub where Vader is talking to Tarkin and stops talking but then shakes his hand for effect about five seconds later.  It has always amazed me in all of the cleanups, restorations and special editions of this movie that they can't fix this one simple thing.  I also appreciated the reedit of the scenes in Ben's house.  The continuity issues with C-3PO being off/on inconsistently has always bugged me and I don't think that the scene is any worse for the repair.

I absolutely love the edit and it's miles better (to say the least) than the SE.  It was meant to be an improved SE with updated effects, modernizing technology, improving continuity, while keeping the great films intact.

I've always thought that both projects like Harmy's and Ady serve the cause of this site from different angles.

Preservations remind us of how very watchable the original versions are and how they deserve a full HD restoration.

Edits like these show how laughable the official stance that the SE of the moment are the only versions officially allowed.

The Revisited projects are not meant to replace the originals but be a better example of the idea of SE.

With the old continuity errors fixed and no new ones added.

With effects that tastefully augment what was created in the seventies and eighties instead of scribbling over it.

With alternative readings that sit with the original text instead of going against the grain like Greedo shooting at all.

I've uploaded the PURIST Edition of ANH:R to the spleen. I don't especially need it, but I like the idea of making it readily available for those who want it.

Just an observation - In the scene where the added Hyperspace tunnel can now be seen through the Falcon's cockpit window wouldn't it appear to be off to the left of the screen a touch rather than dead centre? I'm no expert on these technical things so forgive me if I'm talking Wampa poodoo here but it just always gets my attention whenever I see it. The cockpit is on the far side of the ship so this makes sense right?

I'm sure someone has an in-universe explanation that goes beyond my knowledge of Star Wars, but my explanation would be it's akin to the weird theory that wherever you are in the universe is the center. The hyperspace tunnel isn't an actual tunnel with a measurable diameter, it's just a consequence of observing the universe at hyperspeed. So, wherever you're standing, you'd see the "end" of the tunnel straight ahead of you.

Let me give a simpler explanation.  At night, go into an empty field with no nearby objects that would get in your peripheral vision when you look straight up.  Note the pattern of the stars.  Walk 20 paces to the left and look up again.  Any change?  Now walk 30 paces forward and look up.  Still no change?  When you are talking about celestial distances, there is very little change when you move so little.  Even when our planet is on the opposite side of the sun (half a year from the observation date), the pattern of stars remains unchanged to the naked eye, and only fine instruments can detect the minuscule differences in their relative positions.  Since those lines in hyperspace are created by stars, there is really no change no matter where on the ship you sit.

You are the fricking man Adwyn and I love this movie. this is why I joined this site. Lucas is dumb not to hire you already and I'm glad you have a forward looking vison to new special effects and your not stuck in the past with that old 70's crap!

I don't think praising an edit in terrible English breaks any rules. As good as the preservation work and other edits are a lot of people come here just sing Ady's praises.

Or get a Myspleen account :-p

Hopefully they stay around for the rest of the goodies and aren't naughty.
