They could have done it as a film way back when but it was way too much a ripoff of Hidden Fortress.

Kurosawa as a director was on an entirely different plain as a director than the hack Lucas was/ is.

Eh, Kurosawa got away with ripping off Dashiel Hammet's "Red Harvest" to make "Yojimbo," so I think it would have been fine.

This looks like one of the coolest things I have ever seen. I've wanted to know what that story would've looked like for practically all my life (I know that sounds a little ridiculous).

Not all my life, but since I got the annotated screen plays in the late 90s, I've been imagining this story in my head.

Yeah, it's that kind of negativity that makes me not want to frequent forums. Makes me wish ot.com had a ranking system where nuisances like that could be buried by the collective.

Skyguy's idiom is unique to himself, nobody else posts like him as consistently, he has been around doing his thing for quite a while.

No, my good lord, ignore VINH, ignore vbangle, ignore Frink, but for sweet skyjedi, kind skyjedi, true skyjedi, valiant skyjedi, and therefore more valiant being, as he is old skyjedi, ignore not him thy company, banish not him thy  company. Ignore plump skyjedi, and ignore all the world.

By the way Yojimbo is less like Red Harvest than most people make it out to be. The Glass Hand is more like it. But even there, it's more a matter of inspiration than anything else.

The Hidden Fortress is a remake of a previous Kurosawa film called They Who Tread the Tiger's Tail, which was based off a Kabuki play, which was based off a Noh play, which was based off of medieval legends which were based off a real person.

True story.

What he said. The Men Who Tread on the Tiger's Tail is on Hulu+ by the way, I watched it a couple of nights ago. It's only 60 minutes long.

Star Wars always reminded me more of Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky it did Hidden Fortress... I've always thought that Lucas claimed Hidden Fortress as a source in order to keep people from looking at just how much of Star Wars' DNA actually comes from Nevsky.

Well first of all Eisenstein isn't exactly from the other side of the track, so to speak. But also, Lucas had an image of Eisenstein hanging in his writing room when he was doing Star Wars IIRC (see Skywalking).

Now I'm in the mood to re-read Secret History and the Annotated Screenplays...and watch Hidden Fortress again.

I wonder if any of the other early drafts will get comic adaptations. I for one would love to see someone try to wring a coherent storyline out of the Journal of the Whills outline.

This is awesome news, the art style on that page preview looks fantastic. We should be grateful that we have a person like Rinzler aboard Lucasfilm.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Sincerely, Lynne Hale publicity@lucasfilm.com

It was never completed. It goes on for a page and a half but then trails off because Lucas lost interest.

It would be more interesting to make a comic of the proper treatment though. Or Leigh Brackett's first draft of Empire. There is some amazing stuff in that one that just begs to be brought to life.

It would be fun to read a comic based on earlier versions of Revenge Of The Jedi too.

Ben and Yoda coming back from the dead, The Emperor's throne room in a lake of lava. Multiple Death Stars. A rival Moff working against Vader.

Wow, you guys are absolutely right.  There is so much interesting material in those earlier drafts that would be amazing to see in "how it could have been" comic form.  Seriously, that would be fun to read, and now I can't help but wonder if success in this current endeavor might lead to comics of other film drafts!

Lucas's influences aside, I do think this will be an awesome comic. Dark Horse Star Wars and Dark Horse Conan are two of the only comic lines I regularly read and this looks like it will be even cooler than usual.

I'd like to see an entire series devoted to alternate SW Universes, myself. This could open the door to such a thing.

The Infinities comics were essentially alternate universe stories.

Those are basically mini-series, though (and not very good ones, at that). I'm thinking of something more along the lines of Star Wars Tales, only completely devoted to out-of-continuity storylines and reimaginings.

Same.  There are so many possibilities.  What I'd really like to see is something that uses SW77 as canon- and nothing else.  Ie, Vader is not Luke's father, Leia is not his sister, etc.  That's the universe I think about a lot.

I need to read Splinter of the Mind's Eye.

Anyone remember different camera angles from ROTJ?

How come Entertainment weekly is saying this is Dark horse's swan song for star wars comics, are they just guessing Disney is going shut them down soon, or jumping the gun?

I would throw a kitten in a blender for that comic.
