Disney Closing LucasArts

Author

Such failed maximization of potential for LucasArts in the past 8-10 years. I think they dug their own grave, but I wish Disney would have helped give them some new direction and allow them to hear out the kinds of projects people wanted to see.

Look on the bright side, now all that talent can go work on other projects that might actually get released.

Or look at the dark side, this probably means that anyone will be able to buy the rights to make a Star Wars game as a cheap cash in.

JEDIT: Wait, Star Wars Angry Birds already exists...

Well what can I say. The recent games (Force Unleashed in particular) sucked real bad. The last good story-driven games were KOTOR1/2, Jedi Knight 2, and Jedi Academy which was 10 years ago. Well I have to be honest SWTOR was quite okay from the storyline point of view.

I have no regrets for 1313. I had a feeling that it would be another Force Unleashed.

But you have to give credit to LucasFilm. The more stupid their products are the better they sell (example: The Prequels and Force Unleashed). It is truly amazing.

Rogue Leader was Lucasarts and I love that game and I rather like Bounty Hunter.

Just realised how long ago that was.

One thing to keep in mind - Disney is closing the development arm of LucasArts. LA is going to focus on licensing and managing their IPs that way.

Honestly, I think this can turn out positively. It's all up to whether Disney wants to allow passionate, talented developers to make quality games with great storytelling or if they want to saturate the market with casual/party games and the like.

Too bad. I've spent 20 years waiting for Maniac Mansion 3.

Published does not mean developed. Bioware did that one.

Exactly. That Wikipedia page is lacking.

JEDIT:

This pleases me greatly.

Also, I keep misreading this thread title as "Disney Cloning LucasArts."  Apparently I can't get away from the Clones.

There's a lot of nerd rage on the internet... all equally saying "LucasArts sucked" "Force Unleashed sucked!" and "F Disney!" "Disney sucks" and often at the same time.

Confused.

The best anyone says is that "the next game was going to suck less!"

I would be lying if I said otherwise. I mean the game practically pissed on the two of the best characters in OT. Some dumb insignificant character beats both Vader and Emperor. And Vader having some secret apprentice. It is beyond stupid.

I liked Force Unleashed.  I don't think the story fits into any canon very well... but it was a good time regardless.

IT'S MY TRILOGY, AND I WANT IT NOW!

"[George Lucas] rebooted the franchise in 1997 without telling anyone." -skyjedi2005

"Yeah, well, George says a lot of things..." a young 1997 xhonzi on RASSM

"They're my movies." -George Lucas. 19 people won oscars for their work on Star Wars (1977) and George Lucas wasn't one of them.

Rewrite the Prequels!

The first one does. It puts a twist on the birth of the Alliance and ties itself up nicely. The second however is.....best forgotten.

I'm fuzzy on the last time Lucasfilm actually developed a game start to finish in house.

I hope somebody at Disney is looking over the old classics in the game catalog. I'd love to see modern versions of Ballblazer and Rescue on Fractalus if done right.

Where were you in '77?

In the 90s, LucasArts was awesome: X-wing, TIE Fighter, Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Grim Fandango... The list of awesome games from the 90s is epic. Frankly, though, their more recent output has been pretty mediocre. It's sad to see one of the legendary names of game development going away, but I'm thinking maybe it's for the best.
