Not a fan of this at all.
One of George's promises was that the droids would be witness to the entire saga.
By removing one or both it weakens the potential of the Revisited project of being the SE and PT as they should of been.
There are plenty of lines spoken by Anthony Daniels in the PT and the Radio series to make him an actual background presence with his dignity intact rather than an annoying mechanical fan service/slapstick punchbag.
It makes much more sense him being in the PT than Fett, Chewie or even Yoda in my opinion.
The first sequence of ANH is both droids who have been in the service of the Organas for a long time and Artoo just gives off an aura of knowing a bit too much for an average repair droid.
The PT is full of potential for improvement. It's so broken that none of it is precious enough to get too worried about and therefore offers imaginative people like Ady and his team more breathing room for injecting new ideas and genuine character moments than any of the OT.
The OT is too much part of the lives of Star Wars fans to alter too much.
I shan't bog down the ESB:R thread with any more of these sorts of conversations and will copy them over to the other threads when I next feel moved to speak my brains.
