So that South Park episode can turn into reallity? Oh my.

Well, I've got my Indy box set and I'm quite happy with it. If anything, I'll just rent this.

Ah but the Indy DVDs were not the originals. 14 changes were made to the trilogy. Notice the glass separating Ford from the Cobra is gone. I don't see what else is needed. Star Wars took place in a galaxy far far away. Such a huge universe could be greatly enhanced with modern techology. Indania Jones takes place in a old 1930s setting. There is more then enough technology in the 80s to make that world. It could use a few more matte line clean ups. There is no room for CGI in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The 14 changes are petty enough that I don't care. Besides, I never said I had "originals" on DVD, did I? Just said I had the box set and I'm happy with it. Which means something more akin to, "I have no desire to spend any more money than I already have."

Funny episode. I was thinking the same thing. Problem with that episode it makes Speilburg more of a nut then Lucas when Speilburg did release the original version of E.T. I don't want Harrsion Ford to be attacked by ewoks.

They may not be the exact same ones that were shown in theaters, but to me a few SFX touch ups (and good ones at that) do not constitute an entirely new version.

Gentlemen, you can’t fight in here, this is the war room!

I for one am all for good fixes in older movies. Things like taking out wires and matte lines are AOK in my book. Still original enough. It's not like they added in a shot of Jabba or anything.

exactly...
their just making it look nicer...
not changing the way you look at the film...

Thing is though is the glass separating Ford from the snake has to be one of the most famous movie mistakes of all times. Fixing that is changing the movie like it or not. Its no longer the same movie. Its a different better movie.

What is this shot-for-shot remake, Raiders of the Lost Ark: The Adaptation? I've never heard of it before.

Some kids/teenagers filmed a "shot-by-shot" remake of Raiders of the Lost Ark with their VHS camera back in the late 80s, tooke them years to complete, with a 0 budget. I have seen some scenes from it, it's quite amusing.

I never bought the boxed set as I have the LD-ripped DVDs. Anyway, what possible alterations could even occur in a Raiders of the Lost Ark SE? Maybe changing the opening of the Ark and possible dock scene, but what else, other than CGIing ridiculous new scenes? It's flawless in my opinion.

How does it change the plot of the movie? Maybe it changes the "history" of the film in the sense that the error is erased. But the movie is the same. Erasing the visible glass digitally does not make it such that Indy did not fall into the Well of the Souls and was faced with a king cobra that reared up and hissed at him. The plot and flow of the movie are exactly the same. The behind-the-scenes history is the only thing that has changed. If you feel otherwise, Jimbo, than please explain how the movie is different.

The thing is though I feel the same way about Star Wars. I don't believe most of the changes hurt the movie. People are always talking about film history really its all the same thing. Both don't complement film history but do make these a better movie then they were before.

Improving it is a purely subjective point of view to take. I don't think the SEs and the other changes improve the films. Listening to how Lucas has dumbed down some dialogue annoys me and I think it detracts from the value of the films. Other changes I see as just being a bunch of grandstanding by Lucas. In all honesty, these films were so well done originally and have held up so well over the years that they did not need to be changed. And the changes, IMHO, don't help or improve them. But they are physical changes to the movie and its flow (maybe not plot so much). I feel that stuff like all the added scenes in Mos Eisley make the entire scene "clunkier" and not flow as well. It's just useless stuff to look at. The importance of the scene is Luke and Ben going to find a pilot to take them to Alderaan, not show us a power droid bonking a drone to the ground. That's pointless and unnecessary. But, as I've said before, that's my opinion. I can see yours. You feel these new scenes do help the movie. I disagree. But we are entitled to our opinions, right?

im glad someone else disliked Mos Eisley...
i found it worked much better as a deserted spaceport rather than a busy one....

Not that deserted is better, but there is just too much focus on all the peripheral crap instead of what was important. That's grandstanding, showboating, whatever you want to call it. What made the original SW movies so good (and other scifi films like Gattaca) was a very understated reliance on the special effects. They were there to establish setting and maybe mood, but there was no reliance on them. Their use was very subtle. That's what made the original SW films so great. You knew it was there, but the story survived without the CGI pushing it along.

It could survive without Computer Generated Imagery but its entrance is so much grander now then before. I enjoy a grand epic feel over a smaller more personal feel.

I can agree in some instances. A grand entrance feel is great in scenes when a grand entrance is warranted. Say, for example, Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix - I think that was his character's name) returning to Rome to take his place as the new Caesar in Gladiator. That's epic. That's grandiose. It needs big showy camera pans and zoom outs so the audience can feel how "big" the scene is and how much "power" Commodus has to warrant this kind of celebration. But Luke and Obi Wan going to Mos Eisley was just supposed to be them slipping in, trying to be stealthy to avoid the Empire, and find some underhanded pilot willing to transport them illegally to Alderaan. I feel that warrants keeping the scene rather low key. But, again, that's just my opinion.

Windexed-do you have the "original" Korean bootleg DVDs? Back in 2002, there was a "company" called Movie Korea who produced an Indiana Jones trilogy set that was made to market to Americans during the 2002 Seoul Olympics. It has very nice motion menus w/background score, amaray cases inside of snake skin design paper case packaging, and 100% correct info on the back (a rarity for asian bootlegs). The set was thought to be a licensed product, so it was on store shelves when the Olympics were in town. Needless to say, once retailers learned it was not legit, it was quickly pulled off the shelves and is sort of a collector's item. I have a set and they were the best out of any of the Indy bootlegs.

i still dont think the OT should have any feeling of grand...
after all we're supposed to know what all these places look like after the PT no?

plus isnt after the empire supposed to be a time of despair...
it would make more sense to have Mos Eisley as a run down spaceport now that the empire is in control...
theres less money for the working man which means that there's no room for repairs...
Mos Eisley should be similar to a ghost town in some respects...
you have the regulars who have lived there for all their life but pilots know of better places to hang out...
its sort of a haven for scum and villany...
