@poita: Actually that's pretty much how the scene should look. Like I said before I've been through these settings about 30 times or maybe even more, back when I did the color correction and in the end I've gotten very sure I got the best result I possibly could.

Even though it looks green at first glance, it's actually how it should look when all colors are brought back the way we did. Considering the downsides of the GOUT of course.

Just check the scan of that scene on jedi1: http://www.jedi1.net/images/1600/ANH-Galactic_Empire-02144-1600.jpg

Even Vader has a green tone there.

I appreciate that everybody is trying to help but it's way too late for that, and I'm very confident that the color correction got the best possible result so I'm not even considering going back to that point again. I hope everybody understands this.

I didn't realise it wasn't a scene by scene process, and I fully understand you not wanting to revisit the colour any more after putting so much work in and getting a far better result than the original GOUT. I think it looks fantastic in comparison.

I have no doubt that the scans are a bit green tinged either, it is a common problem with scanners and with aging film and film duplication.

I just wanted to share that I have looked at that actual scene from a variety of original film sources, rather than scans, and it shouldn't be quite as green as it is in the scans. I am only talking a few per cent and it would only be achieved by doing a full primary and secondary colour correction, which isn't the goal of this project anyway. I have also seen the original costumes quite a few times, and spent an awful, awful amount of my life colour correcting, so I know your pain!

I'm looking forward to this release more than any other, so I hope you don't mind us all nitpicking and over-analysing, or misinterpret it as disappointment in any way.I enjoy the discussion and the feedback for my own projects as well.

@poita: Don't worry, I'm not misinterpreting it. I know you just wanted to help. And I know that those scans aren't perfectly correct, it's been proved by Harmy before.

And yeah, for this project it's a one-for-all script, but it works great on all three films and we're sure you guys are gonna love all three of them the way they look now. We're going to include a before/after comparison gallery on each disc to let you guys see how much has changed.

How far you guys are from releasing the sequels? Is the script ready for them and is it just fixing bad frames or..? Would love to have a sneak peek on those, too! :)

I'm amazed at the balance that has been achieved by using an all-for-one script. I wouldn't have thought it possible.

I'm looking forward to seeing how Empire looks.

@LexX: I don't think DJ rendered the sequels because he's short on drive space with 4 projects currently closing in on release, but the scripts have been ready a long time.

Then they will need the same treatment that SW got: Cleaning up bad frames and all. After SW is released I will go through ESB shot by shot and write down the frame numbers of stuff that needs fixing and then we'll choose which ones are the worst, since ESB has thousands of frames with glue marks and such things. And very important is also to fix the color errors like purple/yellow lasers.

@poita: Thank you. You're gonna love ESB and ROTJ, they look great too!

But sometimes I wish I could just transfer my memory of all those countless hours spent on color correction over to them so they would just see what I've seen. :)

I think I figured out why the glue marks are so different (in shape and color) in GOUT TESB and ROTJ when compared to those in GOUT ANH.

A question first: Are most of the glue marks in GOUT ANH similar to the one at the bottom of NTSC GOUT ANH frame #12675?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!

That one's not a glue mark, it's a yellow flash. No idea what caused it. Check 66414 and you'll have a purple flash! Weird stuff.

For some "nice" glue marks check 14120, 14121, 14412, 23697, 24672, 25356, 26507, 26565, 26822, 27105.

Even though this project has locked in it's techniques/corrections, I wonder if you could post your mention of such a shot (one from that scene of the Death Star "ready room"* would be excellent!), or a link to one? At least as a comparative resource ... if an excuse is needed.

(*yes, I know, I'm deliberately mixing sci-fi metaphors)

@Spaced Ranger: If you haven't seen this post by Harmy, you should check it out. He re-timed some of the 70mm scans to look like the IB technicolor print scans he has. (The Death Star room included) Of course they would probably all look a bit different if projected.

ROTJ was the first film I saw multiple times because I wanted to.

And in 1983, I had my own car, my own money...

I know that ROTJ is the weak link of the 3 films but dam it if it isn't my favorite just because of my own unique memories when watching it.

It's gonna be cool seeing Jabba's Palace the way it should again, and long live nub nub!

And no dam Hayden Christensen either, YES!

Bless you Team Blu!

I love everybody. Lets all smoke some reefer and chill. Hug and kisses for everybody.

If you haven't seen this post by Harmy ...

Thanks! Not only that, but the whole page is great -- and now, of course, I must go through the entire thread.  :)  Actually, that page demonstrates the virtues of working in RGB in a number of ways.

Harmy's previous post, there, showed his quick correction (using Affect Effects?) to match another source. Here's the original scan with luminance graphed (split apart RGB's are roughly the same, although 2 channels had slightly blown-out whites):

It's in pretty good condition.
However, the adjustment compressed the entire range and produced slightly crushed blacks:

While "the color" part may look better (from the program interpreting the dials and sliders), the frame is more damaged overall (which would have been immediately noticeable working on the RGB elements directly).

Another instance of RGB superiority is in noise reduction. Another scan from 70mm Star Wars Film Cells (http://www.jedi1.net/) is very noisy, but split-apart RGBs show where most of that noise resides (here cropped but full sized):

(From what I've seen, this distribution of noise seems to be the norm. I wonder if it's from the very construction of film itself?)
By applying varied noise reduction (temporal would have been superior, but only rudimentary spacial is available in the paint program), it isn't applied where not needed (minimal loss of remaining detail). In my quick demonstration, RED is untouched, GREEN has a little smoothing to approximate RED's noise level, and BLUE has more to get closer to RED's without total smearing (which it seriously needs). A slight overall sharpening was added after the RGB rejoin, to offset the blunderbuss of this spacial smoothing:

Well, all I can say is the latest sample looks stunning on my TV. I love all the dirt, noise, grain, whatever, it makes the whole thing look like an old film print - especially with the colours! It actually looks like I am watching Star Wars for the first time as it was originally intended.

This is some of the best preservation work I have seen EVER. The attention to detail is immense!

Spaced Ranger: "blue channel noise" isn't unique to Star Wars. It's a common and well-known defect of (most) film and is a side-effect of the fact that light transmittance through film is the lowest in that channel.

@vbangle: We appreciate your support!

@Spaced Ranger: The noise analyze is interesting! But with no offense intended, I think by now you should probably start your own thread, where you can explore the subject further and get feedback and all. This thread is after all mainly about Team Blu's projects.

@rockin: Thanks!

I totally agree with this, as You_Too has said we are long past this now and are about to finally release, so lets keep this about our release please, and now to this from us,

OK We have been getting a lot of PM's and emails here and at other Forums asking if we are going to be taking blank donations again like last time, and yes we are, and just like before we only use Verbatim blanks, nothing else so please do not even ask, we want good burns with no CRC errors and we want the BD's to last! so only Verbatim blanks will be accepted, I am sure you guys want them to last and have no read errors as well right?

We do this for a few reasons, some do not have burners and can't burn their own BD's, or some just do not know how, and some just do not want to be troubled with it and would rather have the project ready to go and start watching asap lol, just like before if you donate blanks you will get copies before anything gets uploaded, so you will also be like a tester for us, and we are going to be a lot more selective this time around also, because we would like your help and feedback whether it be by thread, PM or email it does not matter, but some kind of comment would be nice, the last time we did this we actually had some members that did not even have the courtesy to even tell us they got their package, so it is going to be a lot more limited this time around.

Also we am tossing around the idea of getting Blu-ray cases and we already have a guy we use that does all our printing and he does a fantastic job, he even does slipcovers for us that look great, but not sure how to do this for everyone that helps, we are not a Store and do not have unlimited funds lol, plus we would not know what covers you would be interested in because we will have choices, we are still thinking on this, but if you buy cases in bulk they are pretty darn cheap!

So this is what you will get for helping us out to get these babies fully tested and ready for all, you get ALL 6 movies, obviously only Star Wars 77 BV2 and A New Hope 1997 Special Edition Blu's are ready now, or will be very soon! Empire Strikes Back 1980 & 1997 SE and Return of The Jedi 1983 & 1997 SE you will get once they are ready, again you will get all before anyone else, and we hope you choose to help out in testing and give us your feedback, they will all be shipped to you at our expense just like before with tracking, unless you are overseas then there is no tracking, but we had no issues with this before and will not this time either, so think it over and let us know, and please understand you DO NOT have to do this to get a copy, these will all be shared shortly after the Team and the people that have donated get their copies, here are links to what we use, no substitutions are allowed.

**We have added the BD50 blanks because this is what we will use if anyone wants to do this same deal for our Conan The Barbarian US Theatrical and Night of The Living Dead 1990 Special Edition projects, all the same info mentioned above applies to these as well if interested, but we will post more on this at the appropriate time when these are closer to release, which also will be very soon!

Most likely splicing tape.

Yeah, I know that one. It's actually one where the DVNR did a pretty good job.

But then there's weird stuff like frame 27312. There, the bottom of the jawas have been copied from the frame before it. That was one thing we had to fix for our version.

@AntcuFaalb - Thanks for the confirmation. I suspected that might be it, but didn't want to blame the poor camera negative without research.

@You_Too - I know.  :)  The mention is for when the related subjects come up and it might be useful, in the present or next project version. (Of course, if the project has already stated using such techniques, I wouldn't redundantly suggest it.)

Amazon allows you to ship to a different address than your billing address. I'd PM or email Dark Jedi or You_Too giving them a heads up on whats coming from you to them and when to expect it.

People interested in donating should send a pm to DJ, since he's the one with the blu-ray burner.
