Yes I agree.
I always wondered where this information came from.
The only official confirmation came from the packaging back in 1984/85.
But I have never found any reference of Ben Burrt himself saying that he remixed the sound in the mid 80's.
In the DVD commentary for Ep IV Burtt refers to a 2 channel stereo mix.
