Regarding the audio, wow... I always wondered what it'd look like in Pro Tools, but never had the time to mess with it. Been using the m-powered version for about a year and like it OK, but find a few things awkward about it. Still, it is "the standard" out there, and is good stuff to learn ;) Personally, I still prefer Audition for some audio tasks, probably because of familiarity. In any case, that's pretty wild to hear all the details concerning the differences.

I haven't actually got Pro Tools up and running yet, because I only just got it in the mail and my student-discounted ID still needs to be verified.  I've been starting to learn it this semester and I agree that it is kind of an ungainly and cumbersome program—my folks got it for me so I could do assignments at home and so that any future career work won't be out of my reach due to not being familiar with the standard software used by many professionals.  All my Star Wars stuff so far has been done using a Mac program called Sound Studio, which doesn't have as many features or controls, yet has a more understandable interface and far greater overall ease of use.  But if I make myself use Pro Tools for SW stuff from now on, it'll be a good way to learn.

In addition to these little fixes on 35mm stereo track for the first film, I'm still planning on revisiting the 5.1 mixes for ESB and RotJ, so I'll see I fare on those as well.  ;)

@Harmy: It shouldn't really be that much work, but it is a bit tedious and of course I still have studying to do also.  I'll try to be as quick about it as I can.

To be clear, the 5.1 DTS MA is done/ready? ...I thought Harmy had given up on including the 85 stereo mix, as it needed to still be GOUT synched? In any case, I also hope you can get things as best they can be!

A couple of things I spotted:

1. I noticed that the opening star field has a bit of gate weave still...Is that intentionally left in?

2. R2-D2 has some flickering while hiding from Obi-Wan in the rocks.

I was going to mention an audio issue where Han is talking to Luke on the Death Star, and asks after finding out about Leia being held prisoner, "What are you talking about?", but hairy_hen probably already knows about that one.

That would be disappointing, as I had synched the lossless '85 track to v.2.0 and loved how good the music in particular sounded, but the space limitations make that understandable. Here's hoping that won't be necessary, though.

Why not do a BD-50 setup then?

So how do most of you view these files? Burn to DVD? Just put the AVCHD files on a flash drive? Convert them to something else and put them on a flash drive? 

I have a USB flash drive I was planning to be my dedicated home for them but just am not sure of the best way of going about it to maximize the chances of it playing back on various systems (like if I take it to my friend's house).

I would like to keep it as high quality as possible.

^ what he said. Mkv transcode will not lose quality..Personally, I do the disc route, and play via htpc / 360 @ home. Once we go with bd, I plan on keeping original stuff, an mkv, an a bd for ps3 / blu ray player @ gf's place :) ...she has seen most of 2.0, but I'm waiting for 2.1 on bd so we can watch all 3 (the other two are obviously avchd) :)  ..I don't mind keeping different formats, as this is some worthy material ;)

Is there a free tool to do this? I saw MakeMKV suggested but I know that's a shareware )pay after 30 days). I'm not opposed to paying for good software but not for something I will probably use once or maybe twice.

Well the 2.0 had chapter breaks on it

Ok it looks like I figured out the whole shareware deal.  It's freeware for DVD and AVCHD functionality but not for Blu Rays; they're shareware only:

Thanks so much for all the help and patience with people new to this stuff like me. 

A couple of questions that I'm wondering about:

I successfully used MakeMKV to convert SW 2.1 to an MKV but when I play it, it defaults to subtitles on.  Is this set within the DVD info itself or is this an anomaly?

I also don't know what all the different audio tracks are (5 say DD 2/0, 1 says DD 2/0 and doesn't seem to have any audio, and 1 says DD 1.0 English, and the default for me is DD 3/2+1 English). Is the default designated in the disc itself, as in the audio track Harmy designated as the default?

And the biggest problem, ESB and RotJ won't convert. They start converting but after a few seconds I get a popup that just says "Copy complete. 0 titles saved, 1 failed."

EDIT: MKVNixTools seems to be getting the job done on ESB and RotJ. I'll check them tomorrow. 

If there is a more appropriate place for me to ask this stuff, just let me know and I'll take it there! Again, thanks for the hand holding and patience.
