Any way you go, it is hard to see why Windows has the dominance it does, and Windows 8 only goes to prove that it shouldn't realistically be so ubiquitous.
People don't use Macs as much because they have fewer games and because they're more expensive for the same processing power.
People don't use Linux as much because, again there are *MUCH* fewer games, the number of flavors is confusing, and (likely depending more or less on the flavor), it requires a certain understanding about command line usage.
Windows has certain proprietary advantages over Linux; and it has a smaller price point and more power user abilities than Mac OS.
People say that Mac OS is better because there are no viruses, but the reason why is because the market share is so small. If the market share for Mac in any way rivaled that of Windows, you can bet your ass there would indeed be viruses.
The command line thing is mostly a myth anymore, at least with any modern main-stream distro, which any new user would basically only fall into something Debian based (Ubuntu or Mint) or (less likely) Red Hat based (Fedora). The plethora of distros beyond that cater to preferences and choice of more venerable users. And as far as the age old games argument, with the hardcore push by Valve for native Linux support of Steam and Windows 8 Store's competitiveness with traditional Windows game distribution (publishers aren't all thrilled with that), I think we should reserve judgement until we see how things pan out in this current landscape. Plus, we'll just have to see if Microsoft's proprietary lure can overcome that horrid new interface (keep in mind, even if some of you find it usable with third party start buttons, you aren't going to see that on corporate systems, which makes it a much less usable choice for business), that and Linux has its own unique strengths that can be attractive to businesses.
Also, you won't see me defending Mac, so I guess that wraps up this bit of off topic for me.
Topic... on topic... um... v2.1 works great in Linux!
