A New direction for Lucasfilm Animation

Author
Time

Well, it's official, the Clone Wars is cancelled, Detours is postponed (shame that isn't cancelled) and a new series set in a time period not yet explored (could this be between episodes 3&4?).

I have to say that i'm gutted about the Clone Wars. That show felt more like the Star Wars i love than the prequels ever did

Hopefully they will be allowed specials to link the last episodes to the third film.

Isn't there a lot unseen already made?

Makes sense to me.

As alluring as new Star Wars movies are, some people won't shell out money for tickets when there's a SW show on TV. Sounds crazy, but it is kind of true.

The Clones Wars cancellation is equal parts disappointing and expected. I'm actually really behind on the show, but all of what I've seen is awesome. The expected part is that when the show was first announced, Lucas said it would actually only last 5 seasons. So I've actually been expecting an announcement of its ending for the past year or so.

Detours... well it looked pretty stupid. I was going to give it a chance because, you know, original SW material, but with these new movies, all I can say is fuck that. I could care less what happens to it now.

Too bad, it was a solid show from what I saw. I'm curious if they ever showed the episodes that were rejiggered into the movie. It probably played better that way.

Dang. That is really disappointing. At first it sounded as though their strategy was to dry up new Star Wars content to drum up more excitement for VII. Which sounded like a really stupid strategy.

Now it's starting to make more sense. Where normal movies get tie-in prequel comics, I think this new trilogy is going to get a whole tv series. Which sounds really exciting. Just PLEASE let Dave still be at the helm!

Ditto. Season V alone was seriously better Star Wars than we've had in years in my view, and that one season did a better job explaining The Clone Wars and the backstory of the OT than the prequels did in three feature films.

Add that to the other four series and the show totally blew the prequels away. Some of the story arcs and the characters created for the show were just a million times better than the most of the Star Wars content we've had since 1977. The fact that they made Anakin a likable and cool character, and even made it so I didn't instantly fly into a murderous rage whenever Jar-Jar came on the screen is a testament to the quality of the show. And there's so much unresolved stuff for the characters to show. Ugh.

I was totally crushed to hear that they wouldn't carry it on, but I wasn't too shocked considering the merger and Disney's putting basically every other project on hold to focus on the new films... not a good start for Kennedy so far, because I loved The Clone Wars and was really looking forward to 1313, and I know a lot of other people who did, too.

Annoying, but what can you do?

Keep Circulating the Tapes.

The article states that they are "winding things down" and wrapping things up, but it doesn't sound like it's completely over or like they're going to leave a bunch of loose ends.  It sounds like they want all their i's dotted and t's crossed, but I'm not sure it will be through the TV show format.  You know, all shows must end at some point, but it sounds like it won't be so abrupt as to leave all things unanswered.  Hopefully whatever means they use to finish the show will do it all justice and tie it in to the rest of the G canon nicely.  I have to say, I haven't really watched much of the show yet, though there is a strong desire in me to do so, but I can also say that I've heard nothing but good stuff about it, and I could easily consider it an essential element to my personal canon when I am including the PT in there as well.  I need to start watching this, as I've only gotten The Clone Wars movie and the first two seasons.  I think I'll have to go out there and buy the rest and spend the summer watching them all!

Well I certainly hope the season 6 episodes are released on the season 5 bluray.  Too bad though really.  I hope that new show is equal to the quality Clone Wars has become.

I know this is spoilerish so read it at your own risk.

But Ahsoka leaves the Jedi order and walks off into the sunset and that is the end of clone wars and no season 6?

So far not liking what Disney is doing.

They have not made a peep about the oot either i am rather worried.

Thinking Disney will act on the OUT in any way until FOX's distribution rights have lapsed is wishful thinking at best. As it stands, unfortunately, time and time again the sales have proven that not enough people care to make it a priority. These recent business shakeups imply that they're working on building their own universe first that they can market independent of previous lore; after that, maybe we'll see attention to the classics.

Also, FOX owns Star Wars '77 perpetually. I can imagine Disney will eventually figure out a distribution deal, but this is even more worrisome than the 2020-date FOX has distribution for the other films up until.

I wish Fox got the rights to the star wars and not Disney if they had i could have been watching the oot on blu ray sooner than later.  And personally if Disney not getting star wars meant sacrificing the sequels to get the OOT on blu ray i would be all for it.

As for what Disney is doing with Lucasarts and Lucas Animation what does the mean for Dark Horse Comics and Del Rey are they gonna meddle there as well?

Reminds me a bit of when Pocket Books cancelled a whole line of star trek books because they did not want to step on  Orci and companies toes on the New Trek series.

Five years is a good run for any animated show, especially these days. I can't imagine the episodes still in the pipeline aren't going to air at some point. More than enough for syndication now.

Unless Ashoka went out in a blaze of glory, dying for a noble cause, no way were they going to kill her off. I've suspected for a long time they could have her simply missing in action, leaving open the door for her return in future projects. I'd like to see a Star Wars angle on marooned soldiers who don't know the war is long over.

Did the Sat AM timeslot hurt the ratings any last season? I thought they should have kept the Friday evening slot for reruns.

Detours should be put out of our misery though. ;)

Robot Chicken and MAD do more than enough spoofs, and are actually funny to boot.

I wonder if this had something to do with Warner bros stake in the clone wars cartoon.  Anyway why is Lucas animation even still gonna be going is it not kind of silly to have Disney animation, pixar and lucas all under Disney.  Kind of like how silly it is for disney to own Marvel yet dark horse is doing the star wars comics.

Why Not pixar star wars?

"No, not Detours!", said nobody. It's weird how carefully worded that press release is, I wonder why they cant just say " x number of episodes are still in the pipeline and they will come out" or whatever. Everything is always so coy with LFL.

I'm hearing a lot of Disney blame. While the deal with Disney was definitely the catalyst for these things to happen, I don't think they're the ones to blame. Remember, Kathleen Kennedy is in charge of Lucasfilm now and it's no doubt she's the one behind this shake up. Remember, Disney left Lucasfilm to run pretty much autonomously. She reports on what they're up to but I don't think Disney has an active hand in these decisions.

Earlier an idea struck me. In the last arc to air for season five of the Clone Wars, Coruscant's level 1313 was a pretty dominant setting throughout. When Lucasarts made the announcement for 1313 they also mentioned that the characters in the demo were placeholders. Originally 1313 was supposed to be a tie-in for the live action series that has since been put on hold. I have a strong suspicion they might now be reworking it to feature Ahsoka during the dark times between trilogies.

As for the unaired Clone Wars episodes... I doubt we'll just see them end up as a bonus on the season 5 video release. I think they'll either turn it into a big streaming event on the official site or they'll end up airing on Disney's XD. There's also the slim chance they might cap the series off by editing the remaining episodes into a final feature film to tie up the remaining loose ends. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

The first CW movie didn't light the box office on fire, and it would be foolhardy to have anything theatrical between now and the sequel's release. (With the possible exception of the OT.) They already put the 3D releases on hold.

I'm betting Detours gets a one shot airing, and goes straight to DVD like the Lego specials. It may become the Holiday Special of the new generation. ;)

Disney seems to be putting most, if not all, their marbles behind the new film for the time being.

Shame about LucasArts being gutted by Disney. Looking forward to social/mobile SW games, though. ;)

Yeah which is why I said it was a slim chance. You never know though. That first arc was just so incredibly terrible. The quality of the show has multiplied quite a few times over since then. Not to mention the success they've had before doing small promotional runs of previous arcs. They might take the risk.

How much of a hand Disney has in these things can be debated, but I highly doubt Lucasfilm is being governed without input from the current owners.

And the LucasArts point, while a separate issue, was most definitely under Disney's discretion. They put a hold on most LA projects last fall, like the 1313 game (which was going to tie into the live action series)

About the only way they could do a theatrical is have a "one night only" event, as is being done with the HD remastered Star Trek TNG episodes.

In an interview earlier this year, George Bodenheimer, Chairman and former President of ESPN, emphasized how careful Disney has been not to trample on the ESPN way. "I credit Disney with recognizing that the culture of ESPN is a major part of its strength. You could see an acquiring company going a different way." At Pixar, part which was actually owned by George Lucas before it was sold to Steve Jobs, John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, the same is true; a visit to the campus reveals a culture completely independent, with no evidence at all that Disney owns it. "It's like we're off the grid," said Catmull earlier this year.

Iger: Disney will "protect" Star Wars

Iger personally negotiated the deal with Steve Jobs, who was then Pixar’s CEO. As part of the deal, Iger kept the creative team, led by John Lasseter, in place and allowed them to continue to operate with a minimum of interference in their headquarters near San Francisco. “Steve and I spent more time negotiating the social issues than we did the economic issues,” Iger says. “He thought maintaining the culture of Pixar was a major ingredient of their creative success. He was right.”

...

In 2009, Iger negotiated a similar deal for Disney to buy Marvel Entertainment for $4 billion. Once again, Iger kept the leadership intact: Marvel CEO Isaac Perlmutter and Marvel studio chief Kevin Feige. He thought Disney would profit from their deep knowledge of the superhero movie genre.

...

Lucas had paid close attention to how Disney had handled Pixar, which he still refers to as “my company.” He founded it as the Lucasfilm Computer Division in 1979, and sold it to Jobs six years later. He calls Disney’s decision not to meddle with Pixar “brilliant.” If he sold Lucasfilm to Disney, he figured there might still be a way to retain some influence over his fictitious universe. Much would depend on who ran Lucasfilm after he retired.

...

“When Kathy came on, we started talking about starting up the whole franchise again,” he says. “I was pulling away, and I said, ‘Well, I’ve got to build this company up so it functions without me, and we need to do something to make it attractive.’ So I said, ‘Well, let’s just do these movies.’”

Lucas and Kennedy hired screenwriter Michael Arndt, who won an Oscar for Little Miss Sunshine, to begin work on the script for Episode VII. They enlisted Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote the screenplays for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, to act as a consultant. Lucas started talking to members of the original Star Wars cast, such as Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, about appearing in the films. In June 2012, he called Iger.

In the five months of negotiations that followed, Lucas argued that the best people to make the next Star Wars trilogy would be his longtime Lucasfilm executives. “I had a group of very, very talented people that had worked for the company for many, many years and really knew how to market Star Wars, how to do the licensing and make the movies,” Lucas explains. “I said, ‘I think it would be wise to keep some of this intact. We need a few people to oversee the property, you know, who are just dedicated to doing that, so we’re sure we get this right.’”

How Disney Bought Lucasfilm—and Its Plans for 'Star Wars'

That's all rumor. The fate of 1313 was called into question just recently and when asked Lucasarts responded, "Star Wars 1313 continues production." So far only unidentified "sources" have claimed otherwise.

I'm assuming the OT is the Star Wars you love.  In what way(s) do you feel it was like the OT?
