The 64,000 dollar question, will Lucas be able to stay away from SW when they shooting Episode 7?

Well if one is around when the film is being shot he can only influence the execution details. Creatively most important part is actually pre-production where the main ideas are formed, casting is done, visual concepts are made and script is written.

I highly doubt he resisted the temptation to completely stay away from the pre-production.

I could see Lucas having arranged visits to the set a few times, but not randomly popping in.

Plus, George barely stayed awake when he was directing the prequels. He'd probably fall asleep just being on a set otherwise.

No way. Lucas and SW have been Siamese twins for thirty years. He'll be involved in the production so that it will make more money. I mean with ESB he was almost not involved at all, and that made less than $300 million. To him the less money a film makes, the worse it is.

The SW brand sells itself without needing Lucas' name attached.

Older fans put off by the prequels and special editions will be more enthusiastic due to Lucas not writing/directing.

The visuals and such will be the attraction for younger fans.

Other casual fans and filmgoers probably don't care about whether Lucas is involved or not.

This movie will make a hell of a lot of money because everyone wants to see what happens when Lucas isn't involved.

He just wasn't on set all the time. Otherwise he was just as involved in creative process as he was in other two films.

Right.  Lucas was pretty involved with "Empire"- involved enough that he wrote "Empire Strikes Back" draft 2 and 3 (which includes most of our favorite scenes), hired both Leigh Brackett for Draft 1 and Lawrence Kasdan for Draft 4.

He was on the phone with Irvin Kershner during shooting and showed up every once in awhile.  In fact both him and Kershner had identical flip books with the entire movie's storyboards so that they could discuss things more easily on the phone.

He was also involved enough to completely edit "Empire" himself- the problem was that it sucked (if I recall correctly)

I wish that I could just wish my feelings away...but I can't.  Wishful wishing can only lead to wishes wished for in futile wishfulness, which is not what I wish to wish for.

Well he did wrote the actual initial draft which (according to Kasdan) had pretty much all scenes in place as they are in the film now. Of course Kasdan improved the dialogue dramatically.

They had a book of storyboards and conceptual art and most of it came from McQuarrie, Johnston and Rodis-Jamero who all worked directly with Lucas and his ideas.

He was visiting sets only a few times until after 3 months when the production went over-schedule. Then he was on the set daily. But that is really irrelevant since he wasn't the one directing actors.

He did not edit it himself. He and Hirsch worked side-by-side and his wife helped them.

I think this is what is being referenced.

That came from the very "objective" Secret History of Star Wars and to my knowledge it doesn't provide any source nor does it specifically name people from the cast/crew who "claimed" that.

Still even if the film was being edited by Lucas during the shooting, that doesn't change the fact that in the end he and Hirsch edited it (again).

It does.

Edited again means it was edited before so if the story is true (and I have very little doubt that it would be in the book if the facts were in serious doubt) Lucas did edit the film on his own at one point.

Proving he had a degree of control over the film above and beyond just being part of a team.

Lucas did a little second unit shooting on Empire. This is mentioned in the original making of book. Specifically the scene where Luke talks to the medical droid before he heads off to his snowspeeder.

Well obviously he had a major creative control over the entire film. I was just trying to say that he wasn't some control freak as it was suggested.

Of course he was a control freak.

Wouldn't you be if you had invested everything you had just got from the biggest hit (not to mention lucky break in having found a kind ear like Alan Ladd Jr) in cinema history?

I know I would be much worse.

Lucas control freak nature is probably why Kurtz was let go, why Kershner decided to do no more star wars films, and why he had a hard time getting a director for Return of the Jedi.

Considering he backseat directed Jedi and Crystal Skull i don't blame what others think of working with him.

Because of the Save Lando campaign here, I often forget he wasn't killed off already. ;-)

As long as there's no Vader I am pretty ok with most of the cast returning. I have my doubts, but they're not great enough to keep me away.

If Dwayne Johnson is in Star Wars might as well be directed by Michael Bay.

WWE plus explosions and stupidity, sure i can see Vince as the executive producer as well, might as well throw in Steve Austin as a Sithlord.

Speaking of people I'm betting would love to be in Ep7.....

skyjedi, is that an actual verified quote from Pegg in your sig? I only just noticed it, so I apologize if you've had it for a while. I'm guessing it's from a year and a half ago, when the blu-rays hit? I would think Pegg would love to be in Ep7, especially now that his friend JJ is directing. Granted, it might be a little jarring having an actor from ST cross over so blatantly into SW.

Pegg does have some Star Wars experience. He played Dengar on the Clone Wars.
