I can't wait. :)

One day we will have properly restored versions of the Original Unaltered Trilogy (OUT); or 1977, 1980, 1983 Theatrical released versions (Like 4K77,4K80 and 4K83); including Prequels. So that future generations can enjoy these historic films that changed cinema forever.

Just wanted to tell you guys that we're closing in on releasing the first part which is of course Star Wars! (I won't ever call it Episode IV... haha)

DJ and I managed to solve the render problems. It seems avisynth has a limit for how many clips can be combined in one script, and we had many since there were lots of fixed frames to put back into the render.

Now all that is left is for me to make the final decision on the colors, the menu guy to finish our menus and then it won't be long until you have both SW theatrical and 97 SE.

This will be a day loong remembered...

Small update: With the 97 SE we're gonna include the trailer for the 97 SE trilogy and a making of-documentary, both ripped from DJ's own Laserdiscs.

Both has been upscaled and slightly denoised. The documentary has some horribly oversaturated yellows though, and there was nothing we could do to completely fix it so we just toned it down a bit. It'll still be very enjoyable though.

Also, since the documentary is mostly shot on video it is in full 60i motion so when upscaling it we've deinterlaced it to 60p to keep all the smooth motion intact.

Sounds great. Does that mean the release date is drawing near, or is that still a ways off?

The release date is drawing near, but only for SW/ANH. ESB (GOUT version) will be extremely tough to clean up. We're gonna have to be very selective with which frames to fix.

Double post from me but I had to so you could see this.

A few days ago I tried to help out in Harmy's thread by analyzing Obi-Wan and Vader's duel. A couple days ago when I got an encode from DJ of our GOUT SW I decided to watch the duel a bit in the same way, looking closely at stuff and that's when I noticed something interesting in how they have combined the shots into this scene.

This shot comes before Vader hits the wall with his saber, yet the crack is already there! It's also a mirrored shot which can be seen if looking closely at the panel on Vader's armor:

Then, when Vader is about to hit the wall, the crack is once again there before he hits, but now the image isn't mirrored anymore:

Next shot, the crack starts burning, the image is not mirrored:

In this shot we have the same angle as in the first pic except it's not mirrored anymore, but look at the crack in the wall. It's a different crack this time:

And now the old crack is back:

That is weird. It looks like maybe a combination of some great tight editing of different pieces in order to create the desired effect regardless of any errors it might cause.

Badass. The doc is what it is, though I have noticed that it is slightly different to the three part slightly shorter VHS edition.

Haha yeah, he's probably built lots of those.

Anyway, no news yet but we're trying to finish all the 4 projects we have going on, so we can finally release them all.

Just bumping the thread because I want everyone to see this post that I made, in case anybody can help us out.

Very exciting, need to order up some blank Blu Rays to make sure I'm ready for the eventual release!

I really want to watch this version, but I'm not sure where to get a Myspleen invite. Can anyone help me?

Check your pm. The Blu Ray version isn't available yet but the V.3's are a must have as well. Start there and really appreciate the Blu's once they are finished.

Thanks! Me and my buddies are gonna spend some much needed time with the Original Trilogy!

Update! Make sure to check myspleen because DJ has encoded previews for both Star Wars theatrical and 97 SE which he will upload soon. These new previews have the final color timing and fixes.

Since they're just previews, they will be in quite low bitrate, so expect to see a few compression artefacts here and there, especially in the 97 SE since that one's based on an already compressed digital TV broadcast.

Compression aside, these will give you an idea of what to expect when we release these very soon.

This is so exciting!  Any ETA?  I think I asked before, but just because I'm so excited I will ask again: do you have a rough estimate of how long before ESB and ROTJ? :D

Author
Time

Nope, no estimate on ESB and ROTJ since there is no way to tell how long it will take to clean up the bad frames for those. The SE's will be pretty easy though since they're only getting basic color correction and upscale. The GOUT gets the full treatment so that's why it's so hard to tell when it will be ready. We're also finishing two sideprojects we've been working on, then we can probably work only with Star Wars and maybe things will start moving a bit faster.

Sick good. It's crazy you guys can make the GOUT look like that. This blows away DJ v3 and those looked very good.

The only thing lacking for me is the weak star fields but I know that is the limitation of the source material you guys are working with, nothing you can do about that really...and I completely understand that. Its just a slight bummer because the rest is just so nice to watch and listen to.

When this set is done, and if I am lucky enough to acquire it, I might be tempted to call it quits in looking for that next Star Wars edit or preservation. This edition is that good.

The GOUT was a turd that polished up pretty good after all.

Thank you guys.

Yeah these really look amazing. It's hard to believe GOUT is the source. And the '97 version will finally replace my widescreen VHS set!  Feels good to be excited about Star Wars again!

Thanks for all the hard work guys!

Thanks a lot guys! :)

I'll pass on all the comments to DJ too, because I know he will be just as happy as me when reading them.

Honestly, I'm more or less in the same place as you. As far as I'm concerned, this is all I'll really need / all I really want going forward (I will keep my eye on -1's project also, though). I've been following this project a loooooooong time, and am pretty much giddy that it's all shaping up so nicely.

DarthBoMan, while there are certainly a few other projects that mildly pique my interest around here, like you, this project is essentially the one reason I visit the site every day as diligently as I do.

You_Too, as always, thank you for your hard work, and absolutely pass along my appreciation to DJ. What you guys are both doing is really, truly appreciated.

May the Force be with you.

Same here, until there are HQ film prints, these are the ones that'll make me happy and the only ones I need. Can't wait to watch these.

I just watched the demo...

WOW! I never thought GOUT could look this good.

You_Too: The colors are spot-on. Excellent job!

Keep it up, guys.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

I’m late to the party, but I think this is the best song. Enjoy!
