Tarantino always thinks he's the coolest guy in the room. One of the reasons I find him so damn annoying, even while enjoying his work. He had to show that, yeah he's AT the Oscars, but he still knows he's too cool to be there.

I think the bow tie is on the way out. I think the string tie needs to come back.
