Looks like another great project! I went off to your website for your screen shots and thought to make a few observations.

I would recommend, if you are able to do it, to preview a snapshot of your captures to be sure you are not "crushing the blacks" or "blowing out the whites". Using Leia's slave-girl shot for my proof of concept, the screen shot looks fine until it is compared with the released movie (I'm using the 2006 DVD release; the 1983 release, as an extra on that same DVD, was darker and muddy).

Here's the 2006 DVD anamorphic frame (720x480):

It is fairly dark, but has strong color and proper highlights. A good shot. Interestingly, when your 16mm capture is resized for DVD anamorphic, it contains most of the original picture (bordered in green):

But when it is put in place, you can see it is way too bright:

Here's the problem -- you've blown out the whites on your capture. The grabbed frame in a paint program shows the spectrum has no darks and is off the top in whites -- too bright. I had to do some fancy settings to get it roughly down to where it should've been AND had reduced the color saturation slightly (because this process is error-prone and leaves the colors too strong):

Anyway, once resized and corrected, it looks pretty good over the DVD shot:

Here's how it would look with the DVD background removed. (Will you again do some fancy edging? At least, I expect you'll trim away edge garbage that I left in here for this proof of concept.) :

When viewed with the anamorphic flag stretching it to widescreen aspect ratio, it looks great:

Even when compared to the DVD:

Of course, if the capture settings are better to begin with, it won't need the kind of fixing I applied (with the inherent distortions in that process).

The captures look pretty nice. I decided to have a play about with the screencaptures.; (these are just very quick alterations that took a few minutes to do. Most done with the same settings)

These wouldn't be a true indication of what can be done because i would need the captures of all the reels first and i would spend a lot more time on them than these, but it gives you an idea how good the colours are in this.

Is there any reason to believe this 16mm copy differs in any way from what was released theatrically in 1983. (Placement of subtitles, for instance?)

Because, cropping aside, this would be the best version to call a "Theater Performance Edition", subplanting the bootleg versions None and I have archived.

Ranger: Yep, there are some blown whites and crushed blacks.  Capture is so slow, and realistically I only have so much time available for making multiple captures.  Even with doing that, some scenes won't be optimal. After your adjustments on the Jabba frame, I'm actually surprised it looks as good as it does, relative to the DVD.  Thanks a lot for your analysis and showing the settings you used.

Yes, I still plan to use the curved border. I also have to reduce the slight glow on the left hand side.  The workprinter does that to some prints.

Adywan: Those adjustments look nice.  It's going to be great seeing what you've done with the PSB captures, and ROTP too!

Collector:  I don't know much about the genesis of various 16mm prints. I've heard that some of them were marginally even legal.  It will be fun to hear some of the observations of folks here after they've had a chance to watch the whole thing.  If there are differences, I probabaly wouldn't notice them as my knowledge of the details of these films isn't as encyclopedic as other fans.

Have you happened to listen to the mono track for any dialog or effect differences?

As far as I know there should not be any differences in terms of content between the 70mm and 35mm audio tracks, other than the opening theme, which apparently was tracked from Empire in the 70mm. The mono track on this is most likely a fold-down of the 35mm Dolby Stereo. Only Star Wars were given an exclusive mono mix.

The subtitle and its placement looks exactly like the theatrical subs to me, great reference material for those trying to recreate them in various edits.

EDIT: Going by those screenshots posted by adywan it sure looks like it's better than just being good reference material for subs. My comment sounded patronizing.

We want you to be aware that we have no plans—now or in the future—to restore the earlier versions.

Update... the files are in Adywan's able hands for color correction.  He's quite busy, so it could take a while.  But things are progressing.

Thanks for the update. This is great news! :-D

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post 102 is worth more.

That is crazy thought. But, would be a nice surprise if the Pug returned at by then! :-)

Reels 2 and 3 should be easy.  Reel 1 will be tricky, because there is a huge contrast between scenes in Jabba's palace versus out in the desert on the sail barge.  I had to make three captures at different exposure settings and will need to go back and forth between all three.

Although this project is not yet completed, just for fun, here is the preliminary artwork for Return of the Pug:

I have always liked the Struzan poster but have always hated that the Saber colors are wrong.  Luke's should be green and Vader's red.

If it was to match the revenge teaser at least Luke's should be blue and not red.

I cannot believe that this passed the printers proofs  stage without them telling him to fix it.

Today they would just photoshop a correction.

The Revenge poster is perfect for the back cover. Never seen that variant of the 1985 poster art before. I think these two are more iconic though...

I don't know if textless versions are out there.

Can't recall if Style A was ever used for a VHS or LD release. I think that would be a cool choice for the front cover. I really do like Style B as well.
