Star Wars Music

Well, there is one thing about the prequals that I really like and that is the music. I like how he is blending established Star Wars music from the first trilogy and ever so slightly sprinkling it into the prequals. When I saw TPM the first time, I was a little put off by the music because it just didn't seem 'Star Warsy' enough. But I have to say, I think that TPM musically is very solid and quite good.

I also like how, just like the first trilogy, TPM music became a template for the rest of the films. Williams came up with new music for AOTC but continued to use familiar themes from TPM in new and different ways. Kind of like how Duel of the Fates was the BIG saber fight in TPM but in AOTC it was heard when Anakin was searching for his mother. Same piece of music used to convey a different mood. I haven't listed to the score for AOTC much, but it seem to be on par with the rest.

I hope Williams can come up with some really good stuff for ROTS.

Williams has pretty much been the only one living up to the high standard of the OT. Where Lucas has failed, Williams has done us proud.

the music has always rocked! except that crap at the end of ROTJ SE.

When I first watched TPM, the music reminded me off Indy Jones and the Last Crusade. All the Battle Droid stuff marching to Theed palace.
But now, yeah I agree, the music is good.
I just wish they didn't 'copy and paste' TPM music for AOTC. Just seems so cheap and lazy, and it's not the SW ting to do!

The Biggest problem I had with the music in the prequals was the complete absence of music in scenes that really needed it . the two most prominent examples were the Podrace in Phantom Menace- not only was the sequence way too long, but the Music didn't come in until nearly the end of the race, up until that point theres a real lack in any sort of tension that could have been created by Williams's music. In Attack of the Clones it's the chase in the asteroid field that is completely stripped of any tension and excitement because it's
done in complete silence to higlight the cool sonic wave explosions. granted it is a cool sound effect but it doesn't add any tension to the scene.

A question for you guys.... I don't have any of the soundtracks, but I've heard that Williams does not cover all the orchestration duties. Is this correct? If so, my opinion of him diminishes somewhat, the orchestration of the SW music being its best feature next to the themes per se and their treatment in the specific scenes in which they are heard. The harmony varies in quality depending on context but is rarely nothing but standard for orchestral soundtracks (listen to Kubrick soundtracks for great composers in this area - Bartok, Ligeti, Strauss...), the voice-leading is sometimes shitty, but the themes and the orchestrations! Man, that will follow me to my grave.

Lyrics To The Imperial March found!! written by Derek Kowaluk in 1996:

(to the tune of the Imperial March)
Darth Va-der's bad
really bad
really bad

Don't make him mad
or you'll be sad
really sad

His costume's rad
no it isn't made of plaid
it's going to be a fad
he's Luke's dad
he's Luke's dad

pretty cool! I hope they post the rest of it.

One of the subtle things I liked in the PT was the inclusion of the Emperor's theme at the end of TPM. I liked how the tempo was sped up and children's voices added to replace the ominous male chorus... just different enough that I didn't recognize it at first, but upon second viewing, I thought to myself, "Cool... Palpatine is getting a foothold now, but no one realizes it." I thought it really justified the title "The Phantom Menace."

He's ruined Star Wars
it's a curse
it's a curse

He won't release
the O OT on DVD
the PT is bad
the fans are mad
the fans are mad

1. It isn't good to hate people. Hate leads to suffering.

2.It is dumb to hate someone over the versions of a movie.

3.If it wasn't for Lucas, there would be no Starwars

Unless he's going to kill Lucas, the only suffering I see is wanting the O-OT on DVD.

Not really. It is dumb to begin with to even change three of the biggest box office successes of all time.

3.If it wasn't for Lucas, there would be no Starwars

Everyone has their inevitable downfall. Lucas brought us Star Wars (with all the help of the crew/cast/everyone else) before this.

Hey. I'm not saying like the man or his stupid changes...

If he meant "I dislike Lucas" he should have been more clear.

when in that verse did I use the words "I hate Lucas" ?

maybe hate is too strong a word. I mean I don't want anything bad to happen to him. I just hate what he has done to Star Wars and the way he talks to fans. And the fact the he created Stars Wars does not make him above reproach.

And I even don't want too much mental harm done to him either. A little wouldn't hurt though.
